Title: Was Tuberville a Good Coach at Auburn?

We are all over the board with respect to Gus...and now with Morris.  I am curious about something.

He was a good coach, but he also benefited greatly from some dark days in west vance.  He really knew how to get under the skin of his rivals and could win the big game more often than not.  He also had the tendency to stick his head all the way up his ass against less than stellar competition at times when Auburn "controlled its own destiny."

CTT was the only hire at Auburn in my lifetime that I was fairly hyped about.  I had followed his time at Ole Miss and thought he did a great job there given the state of that program at the time.  One of his first statements after taking over was that he had never seen so little talent at an SEC program.  I went to a strength training seminar at AU during his second year and he said that weight training under Bowden wasn't even mandatory.  At least not enforced.  So, he did a great job to re-establish Auburn as an SEC power, if you will.

As Buzz mentioned, he took advantage of Bama while they were down.  No apologies there.  We've been on the other end of that one too many times.  And, he also had some major head scratching losses.

To be fair, he did a great job putting AU back on the map.  However, he sucked in equal fashion in allowing the program to slide back into the doldrums his last couple of years.  Whether it was due to personal problems or not, he stopped recruiting.  He stopped giving a shit.  We paid the price.

Was he a good coach?  Yes.  B- in my book.

Agree with Buzz and Snags for many of the same reasons.
B- is about right.

He washed 1998 out of our mouths pretty quickly and restored our cred from a physicality standpoint (thanks, Terry, for the Lizard and his ilk.)

He won some huge games and should have BCS crystall ball.

He lost some gimmes and he gave us the "Tubbershell Defense."

He was a steadying force (sometimes to his detriment) as the CFB world really exploded into a new era.

In that respect, he suffers the same critiques as Gus, just a difference in which side of the LOS they focused on.  In fact, after thinking about it while typing this, they are very similar in their tenure and their faults.

I don't know too many people who feel really strongly about him one way or the other, actually.  Whereas with Gus...

Just an observation:

CTT IMO would start recruiting every "season" like gangbusters and finish with a wimper leading to too many projects.
Malzahn and his staff are tireless recruiters. They miss on some but they never stop and don't consider recruiting a seasonal duty.

The last couple of years for CTT were a disaster, especially in recruiting.  The man was going through some personal issues and all but shut it down on the recruiting trail.  We started getting a ton of commitments from guys who "camped well."  I recall seeing a list of guys that he signed his last couple of years who either never made it to campus or fizzled and popped shortly after arriving.  The numbers were staggering and actually played a huge part (IMO) in things going from National Champion to national disgrace.  There was a cycle of not so talented players and no upper class leadership coming through.

I want to see a few more replies and answers before I address my side of this debate and where I was going with it.
