Wow. No in-game thread. And now no weekend review.
I guess I'll take this burden on just to hear myself talk.
The Good:
1. Alabama - Same old same old. Tua is an absolute lock as the number one pick in the draft (I don't see it), Saban, blah blah blah. Being an Alabama fan must be the most boring existence in the history of mankind.
2. LSU - Played a glorified high school, but looked better than I expected. Never thought much of Joe Burrow, but he looked sharp and in mid-season form. The Bengal offense looks much more polished and dangerous than it has in many years. Of course they play Texas Saturday and could easily crap the bed, but they looked pretty legit to me.
3. Auburn - The only team in the SEC that really played anybody of note. Struggled early, defense got its legs and pulled out a win. Should go a long way in helping this team's psyche. Let me just say, however, that the routes Auburn's receivers run are really bad. Teams are going to force Nix to beat them through the air and unless AU comes up with something better than what we've seen out of Malzahn in terms of the routes? Gonna get burned.
4. Texas A&M - Not really impressed despite their opening week win. But they did win convincingly so they stay in the good column.
5. Georgia - Meh. Vanderbilt was due for a letdown. I did find it amusing that three UGA quarterbacks led their teams to wins Saturday -- Fields at OSU, Fromm at UGA and Eason at Washington. Not really sure how good UGA is going to be in a really weak East.
The Bad:
1. Florida - Beat Miami in one of the ugliest CFB games in quite a while. That's a team not ready for the stage. Flippy Franks is trash. Blah.
2. Vandy - Dropoff from last season and going to get worse I think.
3. Kentucky - Another downward trend. Last season might have been their peak. Dinked around with Toledo and could easily have lost.
4. Mississippi State - Didn't do much to brag about in a ploddingly clumsy win over Louisiana. Barked about this year being their year in the offseason. Nah.
5. Arkansas - Another lackluster win over a lackluster team. Left them as bad since they won, but I only see one potential SEC win on their schedule.
The Ugly:
1. Ole Miss - Stink. Stank. Stunk. Anybody who loses to them should be ashamed.
2. South Carolina - The Will Muschamp experiment is going really well. Nothing like losing your opener to the head coach you were supposed to replace at Texas, after he hasn't coached in six years and took over a team that won three games last season.
3. Tennessee - Penis Pruitt. Wow. What a disgrace. How did Auburn lose to this team last season? Or ever?
4. Missouri - Bo Nix or Kelley Bryant? Kelley Bryant or Bo Nix? Good call all the way around for Auburn. Lost to Wy-freaking-oming. Ugh.
Other notes:
a) Notre Dame looks like Notre Dame. Overhyped, oversold. A mediocre team that would go 6-5 in pretty much any league.
b) Florida State: Call it. Time of death? Saturday night, about the time Boise scored to go ahead. Today the FSU coach wondered aloud if his team was properly hydrated. That program is currently dead.
c) Ohio State will be fluffed for the remainder of the season and Justin Fields will be plugged for the Heisman repeatedly. But they don't play anybody and will STILL lose a meaningless game in October.
d) Michigan: Mehchigan. I think they lose at least two, maybe three.
e) Clemson: No contest in the flaccid ACC. Will snooze to the playoffs.
f) Texas: They're back. Again. Until Saturday when I think they get their steer pushed in.
g) Nebraska: South Alabama should have beaten them. Two defensive scores and a punt return for a TD kept them from sharing the dais with Tennessee when the Oscar for worst weekend loss is handed out.
h) Oklahoma: Jalen Hurts looked like a far, far superior quarterback to Tinkle Tunkabaloolah. Polished, poised, unflappable. I saw that dude make reads, throw darts and run when he had to. I wish Auburn would drive four dump trucks of money over to Norman and buy their quarterbacks coach. If you asked me to pick the Heisman winner after week one, Hurts would be my first pick and it wouldn't be close. Honestly? He looked better than either Mayfield or Murray to me. Of course he could go back into a shell again, but the young man looked like he had benefited from some serious coaching since he left the Craphole.
-
Wow that pretty much says it all with the exception of what Boobee said in postgame...which is anyone's guess.
-
Spot on with route running. It's always been that way under Malzahn. If they run, run run like he wants the offense to do, any pass route is 100% more effective. If they're not running well, the passing game is garbage. Loved how the D wound up adjusting. AU outgained them and had more first downs but you would have thought Oregon dominated the way the game was going.
-
There were a couple of back-breaker passes that Nix missed.(33 wide open) As he settles in and hits the open guys, things will change for the good.
I was upset that again, Gus had no answer for 7 in the box.

Oh, he has an answer. It's the same answer he's always had. Run it! Run it! Run it!

Let me add a #5 to the ugly column.
5. Pac 12 - Oregon played a whale of a game and by all rights deserved to win. However, their coarch made too many mistakes late in that game imo. I won't say he got out coached, because we know that couldn't be true, but he's not quite ready for prime time.
Washington? Maybe, especially with the FUGA retread.
Stanford? Who knows? They always play good disciplined football, but never have quite enough athletes to challenge ultimately.
Utah? Looked good against the Mormons, but don't think they can hang with Oregon or Washington.
Washington State? Will probably win 9 or 10 games, but not a playoff contender.
Arizona State? Will make some noise, but no chance to get in the playoffs.
California? Nope
Colorado? Nope
Oregon State? Hahahaha...nope
Arizona? They looked as drunk as their coach probably was throughout their opener.
UCLA? Chip Kelly should have stayed in Philly or wherever he was last.
USC? Nope. No way.
-
Not that he dominated or anything, but it was good to see Owen Pappoe flying around Saturday night. He had 4 solo tackles and seemed to be in the mix on a lot of plays.
I'm in agreement with K on looking back and asking how in the Sam Hill did UT beat us last year? They had -2 yards rushing in the second half against Ga. State. All I recall about that game was it seemed like we had them in 3rd and long all the time and the QB kept flinging it long and have the receivers jump up and pull one out of that ass to convert.

Pappoe looked really good dropping into coverage...big hitter too, as is Britt.

I never hated on Stidham really, but other than two games his first season the guy looked the whole time like he was playing to protect his future.
Bo Nix may not be polished yet, but that kid looks like he wants to play ball. I don't think we'll ever see the patented Stidham/Moseley cowering turtle move from him. He's going to make some mistakes, but they won't be for the reasons I think Stidham made them.
Why, though, is there this uneasy feeling in the back of my guts that Gus is going to screw him up?

Two things
a) South Carolina and Tennessee need to check the balls because they showed none. At least Ole Miss and Mizzou put up a fight;
ii) I still believe this team struggles against LSU, fUGA, and Bama, but they should be able to deal with everything else. However, it being Gus, we are going to dead brain into a loss we shouldn't this year. (Probably Kentucky or Miss. St.) 8-4 is still a good mark for this bunch.

The loss to UT last year was one of the most disgusting, disheartening things I’ve ever seen. It was as soul destroying as anything from the Barfield era, Bowden’s last season, the goodbye years of Tuberville, Chizik or Jordan.
I can’t recall a time in my life I was ever more embarrassed. Well, about a football game. And to top into off? I was IN Tennessee when it happened.
I would have fired Gus on the spot. Would have punched him in the face at midfield.
Have a hard time seeing anything that could come close to that. It made me not care. Haven’t completely gotten over it.

My point was really directed more at the fact that we don't play Kentucky this year. So, I'm thinking that one might sting a little more. So....yeah.

Stidham had a shorter window to the NFL so I understood his reticence to throw his body around. He also knew Gus doesn't look out for his quarterbacks.
Nix and Stidham talked but so have Dad and son.

I meant Florida. You know? The other blue team in the east with a sucky QB. My bad. We'll probably biff that one though because Mullenbitch does things.

If we have any kind of offense going by the time we get to Go Gaytahland, I like our chances. Flipee Franks does nothing for me.

I would be thrilled to just win the games we should win while ripping the souls out of all the others in Oregonlike come from behind victories. I want your fan base broken and hanging around in disbelief well after the contest ends.

florida, kentucky ...whatever it takes.
i'm not biting...5-7 is still a possibility and more so than 9-3. the OL isn't bad...they're terrible. freshman QB still going to make those mistakes, especially standing behind that line. Carlson, well, he isn't Daniel. he'll lose us a couple and win us a couple. Plus we have Gus.
ole miss or arkansas will be that team. you know the one that sucks monkey ass then dashes the dream of a #10 team.

Gus said afterwards that the line told him (going in at the half) that we should run it down their throats.
I wonder what gave them that indicator because we had done nothing on the ground for an entire half.
Did they collectively give one another permission to get out of their own way or was Oregon's d-line that gassed?

The O-line is average at best. But, the second highlighted point is where the biggest problem lies. This, of course, is coming from my vast knowledge and experience in calling plays at this level. (Translation: Drunk Snags in front of the TV hollering, "Run the damn ball")
I know it's probably just my perception, but do we throw 90% of our passes outside the hash marks? Lord forgive me for these comparisons, but in watching Bammer and Okie this past weekend, it seemed they were constantly hitting these quick crossing routes 10-15 yards down field. The QB's would take the snap, make a quick step or two up in the pocket and hit someone crossing in the middle of the field. With the exception of those quick screens, it just looks to me like Nix and every QB before him have to stand (or scramble) and wait for the route to develop down the sideline.
I watched some of the replay last night and a ton of Nix' incompletions were balls he either had to throw away or ones he couldn't fit in on really nothing more than go routes down the sidelines. We seem to run next to nothing in the intermediate range in the middle of the field, which I think would be a much simpler pass for an inexperienced QB like Nix.

At Auburn, we run routes to the OUTSIDE. Don't be coming across the middle, ya feel me?
Liked Kodi as a player. Don't care for him as a coach. I get that he's coaching from Malzahn's route tree which is (in my humble opinion) very poorly designed, but even at that I don't see our receivers running precise routes. I just don't think they are coached very well.
Ricardo Louis:
“I would say that the Browns saw things from me that other teams didn’t see. They understand that I was in a scheme at Auburn that didn’t require me to run very many routes, very diverse or complex routes and the fact that I was not developed as a receiver at the time,†he said.
Also this. https://www.collegeandmagnolia.com/2015/7/29/9060755/auburns-receivers-and-the-routes-they-run-route-tree-gus-malzahn (https://www.collegeandmagnolia.com/2015/7/29/9060755/auburns-receivers-and-the-routes-they-run-route-tree-gus-malzahn) It's from 2015 and I'm really not seeing much of this. I think all they run are 1, 3, 7 and 9.

It was a dramatic comeback on a national stage; great launch pad for the season. Now two layup games to get the offense some live practice and we'll see what this team is made of in College Station.
All that has been said about BNix has been accurate: kid is unflappable, big arm, and high football IQ. K hit it on the nose, though: the kid WANTS to ball out. That kind of moxie has been missing in our backfield since Marshall took his talents to the CFL.
The OLine was dominant...once they wore out the relatively undersized UO DLine. I worry that won't be the case against the much larger SEC DLines. I think some of the newer faces on the outside are struggling with their run-blocking as well.
The receivers were a mixed bag. Some passes were just too hot, with Nix's adrenaline-fueled arm causing problems. That'll sort itself out with PT. Any concerns with the routes should ultimately fall on Gus, since he owns the playbook. To paraphrase Mike Leach: you're either coaching it or allowing it to happen.
Having gotten a peek at some of our competition, I think you guys are vastly underrating this team.
We should be 3-0 going to A&M (we'll know more about them Saturday.)
After that MissST, UF and Arky...none of whom looked particularly daunting in their openers.
Stout test at LSU
A shoddy Ole Miss Team
UGA
Samford
Bama.
After watching this team take the field against a quality opponent, I'm now only sweating the LSU, UGA and Bama games. I think 9-3 is the floor for this team and the playoffs are a real possibility.

But gus beat mike leach.
Srsly tho - I may be the only one who agrees wth you on the Oline. They were ugly/rusty/whatever early on. But if you look past the 1st quarter they very much domained the Oregon DL. Anyone who has the graphic can post - both teams yards in 1Q; both teams yards 2Q-4Q. It’s ugly if you’re a duck fan.
Not sure I buy 9-3 being the bottom yet. As we all know our team lives and dies with Gus’ psyche. Is he in a good place right now? Maybe. He seemed confident in Nix enough to let him air it out. That’s a good sign. Let’s see if Gus’ newfound trust holds up for 12 games. His asshole has been known to pucker on a dime (see 2017 iron bowl and 2017 seccg).

I agree with you and wes. Still cautiously optimistic but feeling better than I was this time last week. I would like to add, too boot the DL (and maybe this has been already mentioned), they kept the Ducks to an average of 1 yrd per carry after the 1st qtr? That's pretty good.
-

I will by all means give the Duck OL credit. They are overachievers. To even hold our DL in check a long as they did was amazing. Kudos to them. But we flat out gassed their defense in the second half once we got our bearings. They were literally requiring oxygen masks on the sideline. Oregon also gave auburn some looks on both sides of the ball it was not expecting. I think it took both sides a bit to adjust to that.
I get that its the first game. It happens. Ask any other sec team not named LSU or Bama or Georgia. They are ugly typically. But I do not want to see that kind of shit to open the game Saturday. They have a quality game under their belt now. No slow starts or rust at this point.
-
I will say one thing. Old Gus does not let Nix throw that ball with 20 secs on the clock and in FG range for the TD. I was really impressed by his guts to do that, I hope to god we see more of that.
-
Agree with the four of yous.
Not too confident v. LSU there and UGA but feel a little better about the rest of our schedule if we maintain a respectable ground game along the lines of this past Saturday. Yes we have a high school passing tree but I think our talent mitigates the simplicity of it when our backs are moving the chains.
Bo and Gus already seem to have some sort of mojo and I like that the kid isn't afraid to improvise which is something we haven't seen in quite a while.
Savvy QB + play calling confidence= less puckering or so we hope.
I know...
he's going to make mistakes but he's not going to take points off the board by taking a horrible sack.
Really like this defense which will keep us in most games even if we are struggling offensively.

Maybe so, but I don't see him doing that with Stidham last year honestly and he had the same guarantee.

More actually.
More buyout. More big money protection.
I think he simply jives with Nix and trusts him.

No way he would do that with Stidham. I agree, Gus like him so Bo. Plus diddy might whip some Gus ass.

The revisionist history grows stronger as the week wears on. This "dominant" offensive line got it's collective shit pushed in for almost 3 quarters by one of the smaller D-lines we'll face against Power 5 opponents. We scored 17 points in 5 trips to the red zone. One time after starting at what, the 4 and not scoring a TD? 383 total yards against a PAC 12 defense.
Kudos to Nix and the O for gutting it out in the 4th. Kudos to Sal Canola for getting his 2019 quota of catches in one game. 2! (Take a blow, Sal. You earned it.) This game was 100% on the D. They were the ones that figured it out. They were the ones that kept giving the ball to the offense time and time again. And yes, the line finally started winning some of the battles up front in the 4th against a line that had one starter over 275 lbs. (293) They were the ones that only let Oregon score once in their last 11 possessions. That was your ball game.
The O-line was anything but dominant. No better than last year. I'll agree on a couple of things. #1. We have a QB who seems to want the ball and not be intimidated by the moment. He might turn out to be pretty damn good. B. We have 2 games against inferior opponents where we have a chance to get our offensive shit together. And we'd better, because if we take that offense into College Station, it's going to be ugly.

I was working off my cloudy memory and perception. Let's see what the numbers say (taken from http://www.cfbstats.com/2019/team/37/rushing/offense/situational.html ):
We finished with 4.8 ypr, earning 13 of our 22 first downs on the ground.
By quarter here are the rushing stats:
Q1 - 8 carries for 55 yards, 6.9 ypr
Q2 - 9 carries for 15 yards, 1.7 ypr
Q3 - 14 carries for 83 yards, 5.9 ypr
Q4 - 12 carries for 53 yards, 4.4 ypr
What does it all mean? Hell if I know! I'm surprised to see our 1st Q production was so good. Outside a miserable 2nd Q, that is pretty dominant run blocking based on a ypr analysis.

I have run this by my crack team of analysts. Actually, I was wiping my crack when I analyzed this, but that still counts. I would think the significant number of rushes in the second half does point to the fact that the defense kept shutting them down and giving us the ball....and to your point, started wearing down their D.
Happy to see the Boobs get 100 yards but the 24 carries concerns me. That many a game will eventually cause Kerryonitis.

20-25 shouldn't be a problem for an SEC starter.
When he starts hitting 30+ I'll worry.

Gus won't worry about that until it happens.

I will say something I noticed about the OLine and Bo was he definitely doesn't fully trust them yet. While I thought they (the OL) were a mixed bag more along what Snaggledumbass was thinking especially for an all SENIOR unit. Bo also (and I know True Frosh) left the pocket more times then he needed. Rather than stepping up in the pocket that yes there was rush but the Guards and Tackles were pushing them around to form "the pocket", he bolted. I know I saw that at least half a dozen times.

That's because he had to get out there to throw another pass outside the hash marks.
