Words from the Mal of Zahn
-- They went live on the field goal attempts today.
-- They did some sky kicks, Malzahn said. They also eight two-minute situations with SEC officials.
-- Both quarterbacks rotated equally the last two days with the two-minute situations.
-- There was more emphasis throwing the ball. Malzahn said there “were a couple of big drops†but that the offense rebounded.
-- The last three days were extremely hot, and Malzahn said there were no complaints and the team is building character.
-- Sitting here today, I can’t tell you anymore about QBs than last week, Malzahn said.
-- “Both those guys did some good things.†-- Gus on QBs.
-- Jay Jay Wilson stood out for Auburn, Malzahn said.
-- Zach Farrar is doing well.
-- “The defense did a good job. What I like is you can tell we’re an experienced defense.â€
-- “Whenever it feels right, you want to be really clear, that’s when we’ll name it.†-- Gus on QBs.
-- Matthew Hill is getting most of the reps with the 1s at WR so far.
-- Seth Williams was limited in practice.
Translation: It's hot. We don't know which QB we want. We'll probably use both. The HB transfer is our best offensive player which means we are installing more whirly bird. Did I mention it's hot?

I don't know if it's going to happen or not, but I'd love to have Eli Stove and Will Hastings back at, or close to full speed. Until I looked back on their stats, I had kind of forgotten the impact they had. Not that they were dominant players by any means. In Stove's first two years, he had over 20 catches both seasons for a modest average of a little over 9 yards a pop. But where he was most effective was on the ground, the majority of his carries being the jet sweep, if memory serves. He scored 3 TD's and gave us that blazing speed around the corner.
In 2017, Hastings had 26 catches for 525 yards and 4 TD's. That's over 20 yards a catch and he seemed to always find a way to get behind the defense. Of course, neither were primary receivers but when healthy, they really gave us another dimension.

With you...we have 3 very good young receivers but Stove and Hastings definitely kick up the threat.
Good news is they can ease into this beyond the opener. Get past Oregon and the same goes for bringing along some lesser experienced offensive linemen and saving some of the contact on our backs. Bad news is that Gus has never taken advantage of the obvious.
I think we handle Oregon with relative ease but the rest of the season might weigh on limiting reps for the vets and giving reps to the 2's and 3's against the lightweights that follow.
None of this is Malzahnlike however.
We have a golden opportunity to develop some quality depth (regardless of the Oregon outcome) going into the SEC grind. It would be nice to have some comfort knowing we have some decent depth in place because Gus coaches VERY differently against SEC teams.
I predicted only 7 wins based on Malzahn's history of running starters into the ground but I think we can exceed that if he will ease up on the ones.

There should be a phenomenon named for this.
"The Malzahnian Shitting Of The Bed?"
