Title: My Super Secret Inside Sources
Post by: AUChizad on October 14, 2008, 02:52:15 PM
Say Tubs is gone.

Quote
Maybe a rumor, so take it FWIW….

Doug Amos is reporting over the radio air waves here in Montgomery that his contacts are telling him that CTT and AU have agreed to part ways and that for now they are working out the details. I know Doug very well and he is a guy with a tremendous amount of integrity. He wouldn't report that lightly.

No offense taken, and I hope not...I think...I'm just conflicted right now.

My Super Secret inside source is some lady I work with who sent it to me in an e-mail. She does have some sort of Auburn connection though, so I dunno.

Canning him now would kind of be like filing for divorce after 10 years of a wonderful marriage as a knee-jerk reaction to your spouse SERIOUSLY fucking up. But maybe mulling it over and thinking of a way to work it out would be best (i.e. hiring a top notch O.C. and allow him to bring HIS own staff with him).

I heard the same thing on D and B just a while ago.  They went on to say, that it could happen before the season ends.  I sure as hell hope that it doesn't.

I am hearing it is a done deal. CTT and AU in the process of arranging for a fair buyout. CTT will coach to the end of year. CTT is tired and has had enough. I was told by a coach and confirmed from a board member this a.m.

I would wager that the buyout includes a clause that all his core group of assistants get to stay employed through January timeframe so they are vested in the state of Alabama retirement system.

If true, I am not devastated.

Stranger things have happened. As with the industry I am in, I will never say it can't happen, however I would be VERY surprised.

Well, fuck.

Let's assume this is true.  Who is up to replace Tubs?

High Profile:
Lane Kiffin

Mid-Level:
Bobby Johnson
Jim Grobe
Mike Gundy

Rising Stars:
Graham/Malzahn (Tulsa)
Kyle Whittingham (Utah)
Chris Peterson

Thoughts?

You forget Will Muschamp - or do you think the cat fight with Jay Jacobs has ended any hopes of his return to the Plains?

He would be my first choice...

Mike Gundy?  Seriously?

IMO, the best coach out there that isn't already locked into a fat contract is Dan Hawkins.  I don't know if he wants to come to the South, he seems to kind of be a West Coast guy, but he is an outstanding coach and only making a little over a million a year at Colorado.  I was really hoping Arkansas would go after him last year, although I'm ok with Petrino.  With the kind of money Auburn can offer, maybe they could get him before he finally gets Colorado turned around.

I pray like hell that it's true, and I hope he steps aside in a gracious manner.  However, I'm not beating that horse again.

Here is my list, in order of preference:

Bronco Mendenhall
Will Muschamp
Chris Peterson

There are more, but I'd be happy with any of these.

With regards to JJ vs. Muschamp, supposedly Muschamp called JJ a couple of weeks after he went to Texas and apologized to him for blowing up.  I don't think there is any long-term bad blood there.

I like Muschamp, but I don't think he is nearly ready/qualified to be HC.  He's a little too fiery and emotional....perhaps even a bit irrational and unstable.

Yes.  Have you seen his offense?  Nice.  Plus he's a man.

I thought I saw where Colorado just gave Hawkins an extension/raise.

I forgot Mendenhall...I like that guy.

None of these will do it for me. Another not mentioned, although he wouldn't quite do it for me either, is Skip Holtz.

Spurrier tired of losing at SC yet? Bill Cowher's pretty young, maybe he'd come out of retirement...

Seems we have spent the last 4 years continually talking about Tubs either leaving or getting fired.  As much as I appreciate the job he does, I think it may be time for a change.  It seems that we get more press over Tubs than we do for our team.  As I stated last year during the Tubby love fest over at AU Nation, no one is bigger than Auburn and we will be fine whether we have Tubs or he goes on his merry way.  Hell I would not even mind if we made him AD and hired a new coach.  Either way I think it is time for a new era of Auburn football.

Mr. Phillip Marshall has stated that a "Buyout Meeting" is simply untrue.

Now, saying that, I have gotten the same type emails.  This might be the same ordeal that former Coach Mike Shula went through with being made to either bring in a New OC and an Entirely New Offensive Staff....Or....he's going to be let go.
As for Bronco Mendenhall as a possible replacement, Not Gonna Happen.  He's Mormon and a BYU Alumni.

I'd like to see one of the following as a possible replacement, if this is all true...Which I really don't think is:

Steve Petersen, Boise State HC
Brady Hoke, Ball State HC
Jeff Tedford, California HC
Randy Edsall, UCONN HC
Mark Dantonio, Michigan State HC
Mike Gundy, OK State HC
Butch Davis, UNC HC
Kyle Whittingham, Utah HC
Jim Grobe, Wake Forest HC
Steve Sarkisian, USC OC
Lane Kiffin, Ex-Oakland HC/Ex-USC OC

I, of course, Do Not think that this would be a wise choice, to let CTT go at the end of the season.....Unless, CTT decides that he wants to be too loyal to his assistance coaches, if that's the case, then yes....Thank him for the job that he's done, then help him pack his boxes ($1 to Jumbo).  War Mutha Fuckin' Eagle anyway.

Mendenhall received his bachelors and masters degrees from Oregon State University.  I'm not sure about his religion, but he was born and raised in Utah, so there is a good possibility that he's a Mormon.

Mormon or not, if we offered him a few million dollars and a chance to coach on college football's highest level, he'd show up in a heartbeat.

Chris Peterson is supposedly a Scientologist.  I don't think he'd fit in too well in Auburn, AL.

Yeah, that's right...he was born in Alpine, Utah.  He first went to Snow College (JUCO) in Ephraim, UT then he went to OSU...then he eventually went back to SCJC as the DC.  That's were I was getting it mixed up in thinking that he graduated from BYU.  I knew that he went to College in Utah.

Also, he was the DC at UNM Lobos, when they had a little known and not that highly recruited prospect by the name of Brian "Mutha Fuckin" Urlacher.

Oh don't get me wrong, I'd fuckin' LOVE to have Bronco as a HC, if all of the rumors are true.  But, with Utah being his home.....I really don't see "Momma" letting him go, even if the $$$ is right.

make no mistake about it, money talks and bullshit walks. if AU wanted to make a serious run at him, what does BYU have to counter offer? BYU couldn't seriously match the money, facilities, or recruiting base that AU has to offer. the only disadvantage for him would be having to play in the SEC. AU could buy him a new momma. i do see AU laying down about $3 million for a good coach though, if the rumors are true. they apparently have no problem paying OC/DC to sit on their asses at home and collect pay, why should they have a problem laying down some cash for somebody to actually work for them?

Well, for that last couple of years, every time an SEC job has come open, I have been screaming that Bobby Johnson should be considered for those jobs, so why stop now? If he could do what he does at Vandy with the limitations he has there, I think the guy could get the job done at Auburn.

He might be headed to clemson. I could be wrong ,but I think he went to clemson. I haven't checked his bio but I thought I heard someone talking about that.

Hugh Jass' list:

1)  John Gruden.  Reports say that the PTB in Tampa are not happy and his style of coaching is just what Auburn needs.  Would they pony up th emoney necessary though?
2)  Butch Davis.  I know he's in the perfect spot right now with low expectations and much booster $$$, but I still believe he would listen.
3)  Bobby Johnson...if Clemson doesn't get to him first.

If none of those are viable options, then go for a high profile offensive assistant and hope that they retain Rhodes to coach the D.

So, how many "Done deal to Texas A&M or Arky" threads did we put up with last year?  Hell, every time an Arkansas media schlep reported anything, it was a matter of hours before it was to be announced, then 24 hours later....egg on face.  I could happen.  I half way hope it does, but I'll believe it when or if it happens.

Besides, my SSS (super secret sources) haven't told me anything yet.

All that being said, why would anyone want Will Muschamp?  Has he ever even been the head coach of a pee wee football team?  You'd want to give him the reigns of a $60 million plus program with this Board of Trustees and his personality? Why?

Muschamp is too much of a hothead.  I think that's because he's still young at heart.  That's PERFECT for a defensive coordinator position.  I can't see him being the type to shake hands the correct way.  He'd probably grab the 80 year old woman who is about to donate $1 million and headbutt her.

I like #1 and #3.  I also wouldn't mind Paul Johnson over at GT.  He has been a winner everywhere he has been so far.  Verdict is still out on GT, but they seem to be doing pretty good this year.  I like Gundy for some strange reason.  I can picture him bitch slapping Saban and screaming "I'M A MAN!"  I might even throw in Jim Leavitt from USF to round out my top five choices.  He has done a damn fine job at USF considering they have only been a program 10 years or so and he has had to recruit against UF, Miami, FSU, UGA, AU and several other schools who recruit FL heavily.

I wouldn't won't Muschamp, I am not ready to hand the reigns over to someone who has never had any HC experience.

I don't think that Leavitt will leave USF.  It seems like he gets offers each year, and continues to turn everybody down.  Muschamp can kiss my taint.  There is no way in hell I would want him as our HC right now.  He needs to cut his teeth in one of the non BCS conferences before he gets on the big stage.
