It's finally here. Runnin' routes and doin' drills. Here's a little injury report from 247. Looks like they'll probably take it easy with a few guys but overall, looks like we're coming in healthy. Oh, I highlighted the kiss of death for Will Hastings.
Auburn will enter preseason camp with a couple of injured players attempting to work their way back into the rotation.
The Tigers open preseason practices Friday at the Auburn Athletics Complex, where the Tigers begin their slate of 14 practices in 17 days before the fall semester begins.
Defensive tackle Daquan Newkirk (https://247sports.com/Player/Daquan-Newkirk-83657) and Nickel Jordyn Peters (https://247sports.com/Player/Jordyn-Peters-88690) are recovering from Achilles injuries that required surgery and forced them to miss spring practices in March and April.
"Two guys that had the Achilles, we're gonna wait and see what that looks like at the very start of fall camp," Auburn coach Gus Malzahn (https://247sports.com/Coach/Gus-Malzahn-17) said at SEC Media Days. "We've got a couple shoulders that we're waiting on. But for the most part it's looking good right now."
Newkirk has suffered two separate injuries to an Achilles tendon since his arrival at Auburn in 2018. He ruptured a tendon before spring practices in 2018, but did return later in the season, his first, on campus. He is a big part of Auburn's plans at defensive tackle this season, though it remains to be seen how much he will factor into the race for the starting job next to All-SEC defensive tackle Derrick Brown.
Tyrone Truesdell (https://247sports.com/Player/Tyrone-Truesdell-75389), Coynis Miller (https://247sports.com/Player/Coynis-Miller-94157), Newkirk and potentially Buck pass rusher Nick Coe (https://247sports.com/Player/Nick-Coe-69566) will compete for playing time at tackle.
Peters is expected to be Christian Tutt's backup at Nickel, and could rotate between corner and Nickel during the season if needed. He accumulated 24 tackles, including 3.5 for losses and one sack, while playing in all 13 games last season.
Beyond Newkirk and Peters, the Tigers are expecting several players to return from offseason surgeries to compete when preseason camp begins Friday.
Buck pass rushers Big Kat Bryant (shoulder) and Nick Coe (https://247sports.com/Player/Nick-Coe-69566) (hand), receivers Will Hastings (https://247sports.com/Player/Will-Hastings-76509) (knee) and Eli Stove (https://247sports.com/Player/Eli-Stove-31497) (knee), and backup safety Smoke Monday (https://247sports.com/Player/Smoke-Monday-89772) (shoulder) are expected to be available Friday. Malzahn wasn't clear on whether the players with the shoulder injuries will be fully cleared for contact practices, however.
"I will say this about last year: Eli Stove (https://247sports.com/Player/Eli-Stove-31497) and Will Hastings’ (injuries) were really a big blow to us from the standpoint that those guys were proven big-play guys to get open versus man (coverage)," Malzahn said. "That was a big blow to our offense last year. To have those guys back with their experience gives us a real shot in the arm. Then, the good thing now is that we didn’t have them last year but the young guys got a chance to grow up and have experience — Anthony Schwartz (https://247sports.com/Player/Anthony-Schwartz-90347), Seth Williams, those guys have real quality game experience. You have these two guys in, and it just gives us more depth. When we’ve been at our best, we’ve had receivers that really understood our offense make adjustments."
Malzahn believes Hastings has a future in the NFL. The former walkon kicker moved to receiver in the spring of 2017 and had a breakout season with 26 catches for 525 yards and four touchdowns. He suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the spring of 2018, returned for a couple of games (no catches) in the fall and then re-injured the knee in September, requiring another surgery in October. Hastings is cleared for full contact, Malzahn said.
Stove underwent surgery to repair an ACL in March 2018, but wasn't fully cleared until April 13.

Hey Gus, if you give the young guys a few plays here and there when your studs are healthy they will also get the game experience of which you speak. It also may keep the studs from coming up lame in game 7 or 8 each season.
Just a thought.

We lack quality linebacker talent and depth PERIOD.
Defense has four or five key injuries on the two deep and our biggest question will be our ability to pressure the passer with Newkirk and Bryant.
The latter has a ripping good nickname.
Shitty offensive line is older and our one true everyday back is scheduled for the trash heap about two thirds of the way into the season if Malzahn has his way.
Nobody has seen Gatewood throw a ball in a real game that mattered (J.J.) so that doesn't give me confidence either.
I think we start out 3-0 but have no clue what happens after that. All (except Fuck Georgia) are winnable but the schedule placement ruins any hope for a double digit win season. And it wouldn't surprise me if we choke up our guts against Jimbo and Mullen. (see last season v. Tennessee)
On the bright side a win over Samford probably gets us bowl eligible or win number 7.

Can you still be fast with a broken hand? WOTS is Anthony Schwartz suffered one and is having surgery. No timetable on return.

The cast might slow him down a little, but he should still be able to block, so it's all good.

Say what now? What makes you think we don't have talent at Linebacker?
I would agree the depth isn't there and certainly, we lost two great linebackers from last year, but I think we have the talent there, just young.

^^This right here^^
There are several guys who have a decent amount of playing time, but they were behind 3 seniors last year. Updated roster at LB:
Colby Wooden 6'4" 243 Fr.
Derick Hall 6'3" 230 Fr.
Michael Harris 6'3" 240 RFr.
Chandler Wooten 6'2" 228 Jr.
K.J. Britt 6' 236 Jr.
Zakoby McClain 6' 210 Soph.
Josh Marsh 6'3" 218 RFr.
Kameron Brown 6' 255 Fr.
O.C. Brothers 6'1" 231 Fr.
T.D. Moultry 6'2" 243 Jr.
Owen Pappoe 6'1" 219 Fr.
On paper, I think it was a pretty good LB class this past signing period. The early stuff I've been reading sounds like Pappoe should be contributing right away.

In other news, I was just scrolling thru the dot I am a gay twerker that has no balls!!!! I also have no idea how to use the quote function to post stories, so I annoy the piss out of others. I like male genatalia in and around my mouth. and there is a piece about a receiver I forgot about. 6'4" 210 transfer, Zach Farrar. He'll be wearing Malik Portal Willis' #14. Of course it's too early to tell much but he's apparently been fairly impressive so far.

Hey, he was the only coach with balls enough to sport the orange jerseys.....which we may or may not be wearing at some point this year.
It's just a rumor I heard. Probably nothing to it.

Speaking of linebackers earlier, we have three 4* LB's committed for this upcoming class. We signed 5 in the last class so we should be stacked for a bit at that position.

I'm just glad we have linebackers who can tackle and don't run a 8:33 40

Seriously though that is one thing I don't understand about Gus.
We don't really give him credit for getting the defense back on track......which he absolutely has. We give the credit to Steele and rightfully so. Because by all indications Gus seems to stay out of the defense.
I don't understand why he doesn't do the same with the offense.
Go get an established OC and stay the fuck out of it.

Paranoia. I agree wholeheartedly, but I don't think he can. Lord, please forgive me for the blasphemy I am about to partake in.
Hiring someone to run the show and staying the fuck out it (Offensively) is what Saybinz does. Yeah, he'll go jack his OC up from time to time, but for the most part, he let's him do what he was hired to do.
