Title: Things I learned during bowl season
Post by: Kaos on January 02, 2019, 12:24:43 AM
1. Don't give me the "UCF doesn't belong in the conversation" argument.  I heard that repeated multiple times after the loss to LSU.  I don't know what game anybody else watched, but I saw a UCF team that was every bit as competitive as most of the SEC.  They gave LSU a better game than Georgia -- and were in the same ballpark as anybody LSU played this season except perhaps Alabama.  I think UCF would have been just as worthy an opponent for Clemson as Notre Dame.  I'd rather see UCF than Notre Dame 10 times out of 10 from here on out.

2. Texas looks to be gathering steam and that's not a good thing for football in general.  Texas is one of those teams that if it farts, it's going to be in the Top Ten.  The Longhorns look legitimate.  Georgia looked stupid.

3. The B1G is bad.  Everybody knows that.  Why did Mississippi State's stupid one-dimensional team lose to Iowa?  Further, why did AU lose to Mississippi State, which has one single play -- run caveman from shotgun.

4. I don't really care about most bowls.  Neither does Miami.  Or South Carolina. Or NC State.  They even go to theirs.

5. There is no five.  Bowl season pretty much bored me.  And I could not care less about what happens between Bama and Clemson.  Everybody's tired of it.  https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/columnist/dan-wolken/2018/12/29/orange-bowl-alabama-wins-but-college-football-playoff-losing/2443230002/

6.  Ok. There was no five, but there's a six.  UGA fans are the absolute pits.  They didn't want to be there tonight, they didn't try, they were disappointed because they were better than Oklahoma, Notre Dame and Clemson, Texas won its SuperBowl because it mattered to them and UGA, well ...they didn't show up.  If they had shown up, they'd have won by three TDs at least.

1. UCF is trendy...and good...for now.  Can they sustain it with Heupel (sp?) Does the deal that UH made with Holgo portend some future conference realignment?  The real issue is the schedule, though.  And I see that UCF is getting haughty about the terms of their contracts and refusing 2-1 deals...as if they get to bypass the part of jumping up in conference weight class where you have to play the big boys in their houses and earn your way into home-and-home scheduling.  I like UCF and I like their iconoclastic tendencies, but I don't appreciate their demands to sit at the big-boy table prematurely.

2. I loved watching UGA eat a shit sandwich tonight.  I am ambivalent to dismissive about Texas's "place" in CFB unless and until it impacts television broadcast rights.  Limit my viewing ability and become my sworn enemy.  My fear is that they will swing that big orange dick around and demand special treatment in the next round of tv contract negotiations.  My hope, however, is that the market has changed and the thought that the leverage of a single school could prop up an entire conference network is a laughable idea.  If they can't swing the money bat and they are forced to reckon with the market reality that the Big XII is sucking hind tit...then they might be an asset in negotiations.  Otherwise expect them to continue to be an entitled pain in everyone's ass.  See also: Tide, Crimson; Blue Devils, Duke; et al.

3-bleh
The bowls are still fun for anyone looking to binge on the sport before it disappears like a fart in the wind.  9 months, give or take, is what you have to live with after this last gasp.  Soak it up.

Things I learned:

1) Never expect Will Muschamp teams to show up with an offense in a bowl game

B) Never underestimate how much ball-cupping ESPN will do for Saint Urban Meyer

c) Bama is a gonna win the thing, so make peace with it and move on...unless

Fourth) Dabo the Prodigal finds a way and then it's actually because he does it like Bama

5thly)my Knicks suck beyond the telling of it.

Seis) Kyler Murray is a shorter, faster Charlie Ward. Good luck with beisbol.

I think I've seen this said somewhere in another thread but, Fuck Georgia.  I loved every second of that last night.  And Bevo just about got the night off to a roaring start with a FUGA skewer.

Personally, I'm not going to buy into the notion that FUGA wasn't up for the game because they didn't make the playoffs.  Smart had a month to get them ready and if you can't get your team up for playing Texas in the Sugar Bowl on NY Day, there's a problem.

I'll echo the sentiments in some of the UCF comments above. I thought they'd play LSU tough.  They've obviously got some talent and have a great game plan.  I think they could be competitive in the SEC but very middle of the road at best.  The difference is yesterday was their Super Bowl.  For SEC teams, that's Week 4.  Can you bring that same intensity the next week against Florida?  Then Kentucky the following week?

1. Disagree. LSU played like warm vomit half the game. And still had it in hand. Shouldn’t have been that close. Pick 6s and turnovers helped ucf. Did you see how many players LSU had out? Plus ucf plays dirty as fuck. It’s bush league crap.

2.  Agree. Herman is a good coach. Fun watching Bevo get pissy too.

3. Agree

4. I watched ours. I watched LSU just to see your new team ucf get beat. Ok ok I keed. I watched uga simply to see Texas whip them. Other than that I had better things to do.

5. It’s boring now. That’s what it is. As in - not fun.

6. I get the logic. It’s a morale buster to get close to a playoff and not make it. But.....that excuse went down the toilet when uga fans AND players crowed two days prior abut Notre Dame and how they got screwed. That in itself should have been motivation. To show the world you belonged. Nope. They laid a dud and Texas bent them over.

You know what Mark Richt did when his team just fell short of making the BCS title game? They got matched up against Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl and absolutely pasted the Rainbow Warriors up and down the field. Motivate that, Kirby with your $6 jack haircut.

Richt and Kirby their first 3 years in Athens....

Richts roster also wasn’t the best money could buy and the East was far harder then, than now.

Disagree.  LSU literally started a reserve WR at DB and a reserve OL on the DL.  And they were down a starting LB until after halftime.  In the second half, UCF had 3 first downs - one of which was by penalty.  All of them were on one drive.  With 4 minutes left in the game, LSU was up by 16.  Could UCF match up with ND?  Maybe.  A lot of teams could.  But Clemson?  Not even close.

The Bammer is right on this one.

For the record, I hope your team cleans Dabo's clock. Next to Georgia, Clemson is a program I don't want celebrated under any circumstance.

I dislike Dabo.....a lot.  I'll give him credit; Clemson is doing really well right now and has good talent.  When he speaks, it's just nauseating.  Saban may be an asshole, but you know exactly what he is and isn't.  After Smart's SECCG post-game presser, he has made it on my list with Dabo and Urban Meyer as well.

With that said, I don't know about Monday.  The defense's inability to stop anything that Oklahoma did for 3 quarters is concerning.  But Lawrence is not Murray.  He's not nearly as mobile.  Clemson's DL is pretty salty, and that is going to be an issue.

Lawrence will have no problem seeing over his OL(whne they get stood up) And he is deadly accurate. Don't count Etienne out either. It should be a good game.

the correct response would be a devastating earthquake to swallow up both teams.

Lawrence may be good, but he's a true freshman that hasn't seen a decent defense until Saturday.  Dabo had better be thanking his lucky stars that they weren't matched up with y'all in the semis, because it would have been ugly.  Only having a week to prepare, it might not be quite as bad.  I still predict Lawrence throws a minimum of 3 picks, with one being a pick 6.

Whoa! No way, man.  We're gonna' like torch Bama's defense like a flame to a bong.
