Title: We Have A Tight End?
Post by: Snaggletiger on September 19, 2018, 04:45:57 PM
No, we haven't since Lutzy and now his protégé is gone.  Jalen Harris granted a release and transferring out.

Well. I don't really blame him. He got his one pass for the year in the LSU game. There was nothing  more for him to look forward to!

What are we gonna do now?!?!?!?  Who will take over that 0.325 catches a game?

Meanwhile, back at the Hall of Justice,  Uzomah is the man for the Bengals.

Man...that guy was a great slot receiver.

Damn it, man. Haven't you learned by now that facts have no place in my arguments?

No that isn't what I was getting at.  You are right we haven't used a TE since Lutz left.

My point was we never used Uzomah either, and he has done great at Cincinnati, he has hands and everything...makes these things called receptions.  It's fabulous.

Honestly, I don't know that we don't use a TE as much as since Cam I don't think we have a QB that can check off to other receivers.

Once again, to be fair, our TEs are not really receivers....

Teaching Cam to check off was done by Dan Mullen at Florida, truth be told.

The only QB Gus ever taught anything to was Mitch Mustain and all he taught him how to do was quit and leave.

There are many around these parts that have strong beliefs that Pat Nix will be headed to Auburn to with his son Bo. Not real sure in what kind of entity but QB Coach would be fantastic.

Remember, this is the first year that players can play up to four games in a season and still be redshirted...also meaning, they can transfer within that year and, as long as they haven't played more than four games, still be able to use their redshirt instead of losing a year of eligibility (provided of course they haven't already been redshirted).

None of us want Bammerlike coach worship.
We also don't want Hugh Freeze types.
But is it too much to ask to have one that we trust?
There has to be a problem with Gus being heavy- handed with the offense and losing control of the personnel.

It's pretty obvious Gus desperately  wants to call plays and manage the game like a Jimbo Fisher... he just isn't capable.
BTW Patrick Nix already experienced the handcuffed coordinator deal at FSU. He shouldn't come to Auburn.

No way we should lose Harris. Just a weapon wasting away because of Malzahn.
The Myers kids underachieving as a package deal, I get that.
Tutt and Monday were in the rotation ahead of little bro anyway right?

Oklahoma State & Arkansas lose their starting WR from last season, both have decided to redshirt and transfer.

A new rule needs to be implemented after this season or else it'll get to nfl level.

Gus is busy recruiting white boys who are either short or have man boobs to play QB in the futures.

I think it has already started.

Running back Kam Martin and wide receiver Sal Cannella both gave thought to utilizing that new redshirt rule and transferring but recently met with coaches and have decided to remain with the program, sources told AL.com.

Quote
There has been concern at Auburn that there could be more players who utilize the new NCAA redshirt rule and leave the program after three players decided to transfer last week.

However, two contributors they were concerned about are staying with the team.

Running back Kam Martin and wide receiver Sal Cannella both gave thought to utilizing that new redshirt rule and transferring but recently met with coaches and have decided to remain with the program, sources told AL.com. Martin, who entered the season as Auburn's lead running back, was frustrated after the Tigers' loss to LSU Sept. 15 when he only got two carries and was essentially the third option behind JaTarvious Whitlow and freshman Shaun Shivers.

The junior got the start against Arkansas on Saturday, though, and rotated with Whitlow throughout the game. Martin ran for 39 yards on eight carries and caught two passes. "We've got a lot of confidence in him," coach Gus Malzahn said last week of Martin, who ran for 453 yards as Kerryon Johnson's backup last year.

Like Martin, Cannella was praised throughout the offseason. In late August, Malzahn referred to the junior as "one of the more improved players that we've had on our team." (https://www.al.com/auburnfootball/index.ssf/2018/08/sal_cannella_seizing_opportuni.html) Nevertheless, Cannella has only one catch for two yards since his acrobatic 10-yard touchdown catch against Washington in game one.

Neither Martin or Cannella has redshirted yet, so -- under the new NCAA rule -- either player could have left the team and gotten a redshirt because of not having played in more than four games.

Auburn has already lost five players since the start of the season, including the three last week -- wide receiver Nate Craig-Myers, tight end Jalen Harris and defensive back Jayvaughn Myers.

"There's no doubt, it's a new day in college football with the new rule and all that," Malzahn said last week. "... This is a new day, and I think you'll see more and more of (players utilizing the rule and transferring) probably in the next week or so."

Obviously because we are way too deep at every position.

After 4 games, Anthony May The Schwartz Be With You, is AU's leading receiver in yardage.  8 catches for 163.  That puts him 25th in the SEC.  Ryan Man Love Davis is 28th with 19 catches for 149.  We ain't exactly scaring the bejeezus out of anyone with our passing attack.

When the passing attack starts (and sometimes ends) with the same 1 yd wide screen pass, it's hard to scare anyone.

Ryan Davis 19 catches for 19 years, YAC 130

Don't quite understand why we only throw to our best receiver when he is 5 yards behind the line.

Well, he dropped that one slant, so we are not allowed to throw that one again. Apparently...EVER!
