Title: In Search of Derrick Thomas
Post by: Kaos on December 24, 2017, 09:56:32 AM
I'd never watched that particular ESPN documentary before.  I did last night.

What a load of ridiculous crap.  The premise of the film is that one of his sons was on a journey to find out more about his father.  The thing glorified Derrick.

I've got a problem with that.  I was in Tuscaloosa when he was there.  The guy was arrogant, irresponsible, selfish and just a first class jerk.  He had people paying for most of his stuff -- and this is something I know for a fact.

The "son" who was searching for info about his dad in the movie was never acknowledged by Derrick.  Why? Well, maybe because she was a white 16-year old cheerleader who came to the Tuscaloosa campus for cheerleading camp and he was a junior in college who impregnated her?  She later married some other poor sap who apparently wasn't put off by her past and they raised the kid.

This "great man" Derrick had seven other children by at least five different women and left nothing to provide for them when he died being an asshole on a snowy road.  Oh, I know the official cause of death was a "blood clot" but that was a result of his reckless and careless behavior that got somebody else killed in that wreck.

It was no surprise to me during the film to see Bama coaches and players freely admit that they let Thomas do pretty much whatever he wanted just because he could play.

Watching him be deified by ESPN made me absolutely sick.

Yes he could but I thought Bennett was a far better player overall.
