So so much hate for each and every one of you assholes that failed to scream the name until your throat was raw and bloody.
There are a few mild mentions, buried deep in threads of no note.
Unless you were standing on your desk and screaming "JASON ISBELL" every minute of your life until right fucking now, you are guilty as well.
Holy Fucking Mother of Buddha. This motherfucker writes some of the best lyrics that I've ever tried to wrap my head around.
For the (until now) uninitiated, start with Southeastern. I don't really know what to call his sound. He's not quite "outlaw" country a la Waylon (although he claims quite a party rep). He's not folky enough to be Guthrie/Dylan (even though most of his songs are rural/roots based). It's...Gothic-American-Blues-Americana.
I have been forcing everyone in my familial/friend circle to listen to him anytime I have control over the audio portion of our association. Sample lyrics:
"She said "It's none of my business, but it breaks my heart"; dropped a dozen cheap roses in my shopping cart; made it out to the truck without breaking down; everybody knows you in a speed trap town; It's a Thursday night but there's a high school game; sneak a bottle up the bleachers and forget my name; these 5A bastards ran a shallow-cross; it's a boy's last dream and a man's first loss...."
"There's a man who walks beside me, it's who I used to be; and I wonder if she sees him and confuses him for me; and I wonder who she's pining for on nights I'm not around; could it be the man who did the things I'm living down..."
"Go leave your boots by the bed, we ain't leaving this room; Til someone needs medical help or the magnolias bloom; It's cold in this house and I ain't goin out to chop wood; So cover me up...and know you're enough...to use me for good."

You just gave AU1 a terminal hard on. He's Jason's Gate Kitten.

No thank you.

Welcome to 2001 when we was playing with the Drive By Truckers. Might want to check out the "Watch Ya Listening To?" thread. Also check out some of the country music discussions. Great songwriter, great guitarist, has become to outspoken with his politics here lately.
-
Known who he is for a long time. Back to DBT but never listened intently until Southeastern.
I think he’s great but can’t say I’m as big of a fan as AUT1. No particular reason. But he’s much better as a writer when sober.
His wife is HOT.
I don’t like tattoos but having a Bob Dylan lyric on his arm is in his favor with me.

Isbell has been brought up several times in Good Country Music Still Exists.

Oh please, he looks like a 2nd class douche at best. Where do you get this 1st class stuff from?

He’s a political activist scuzz nozzle. He’s got all the lyrical talent of Master P.
This is shitty music performed by a shitty excuse for a man.
I tried “no thank youâ€. But that wasn’t enough was it?

I don’t know what more would’ve garnered your attention about Isbell. AUT1 probably sang his praises the most.
Is it because you have no respect for his opinion?
Maybe a shovel to the face would have worked. You should be disappointed in the missed years. The shovel very well could be what you need for a political a awakening. You and Chizzy.
Since you are my friend, I volunteer. I’ll bring the shovel.

I've just gotta say...
This Isbell character looks like he crawled off the set of the Walking Dead. Sounds worse.
His wife? Not hot. Passable maybe, but that's about all I can give her.
I think Wes was under the influence of an illegal substance when he brought this crap up.

Please notice I haven’t commented on this and it is Kaos being so judgmental on Isbell’s constitutional rights. As stated previously, I like the guys music and I like his wife. I really, really like his wife.
But when you start banning, recall that I also haven’t attempted any low IQ humor in a long spell.

I mentioned Isbell in the country thread.
Check out Lee Bains III & The Glory Fires.
Especially with this latest album, it's Isbell-esque lyrics & vocal twang over blistering punk rock. My kinda shit.
And he's a big Auburn fan. Wears the AU hat at all his gigs across the country.
-
Also, if you're into the soulful aspect of Isbell, check out another Alabamian, Anderson East.

No thanks. These guys are bastardizing country worse than Fla Ga Line and Garth. At least FGL are having fun with it.

The two I mentioned certainly don't consider themselves country, and I think even Isbell would say he's folk.

I re-post my post that I posted in the CMA thread. In other words, copy/pasta'ing my copy/pasta.
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Congratulations! Album of the Year is a big nomination. How did you and your band, the 400 Unit, react to the news?
JASON ISBELL: Thank you! We’re definitely grateful. It’s weird: I don’t really see myself as a country musician. [Laughs] I see what we do as rock & roll. But when you’re from Alabama and you have a Southern accent and you sing about rural things…

Uh, I would like to see him in an AU cap? He is an Alabama fan and a big ATL Braves fan. He has even hollered out Roll Tide at several of the shows I have seen him at and two years ago he tweeted about having his wife wrap their Xmas gifts in hounds tooth wrapping paper.
EDIT: Are you talking about Isbell or Lee Bains? If Isbell, no way he is an AU fan. If Bains, I don't know. I have only listened to one album and wasn't impressed, so I don't follow.

Lee Bains. Isbell is definitely a bammer.
I didn't love Bains's first album, but have seen them live and they kick ass. The second energy reflects that energy much better, IMO.
When I saw them in New Orleans, he was wearing this hat. I've seen him several times in Birmingham at Sloss Fest and the Nick and he wears it there too.

So why do those guys (isbell, Simpson, jinks and a few of the other hacks) obsess over who is and isn't real country? Sturgill Simpson made a total ass of himself at the CMAs.

Well to be fair, his mama DID name him Sturgill. I'd have my ass on my shoulders if I had to go through life as a Sturgill too.

The majority of artists up for CMAs are not.

Yes they are. They are what "country" is today. They're not giving awards for artists that play music the way some people think country should be.
-

Isbell would say he is rock and roll and does at every concert of his I have attended. Simpson did make an ass of himself, but not by showing up like he did and for his initial intent. Face it he was right, there was no real country music in that building other than Stapelton. It was what he said afterwards that made him look like an ass.
I would love to read some quotes from Jinks about his views. I've never seen him say anything about who is and isn't real country. I would also disagree that he is a hack. I would be surprised to hear him say anything since he was a part of the "country" festival/jam that he was on tour with this summer.

Alan jackson was there. Church was there. Paisley was there. If sturgill really believes that statement then he's FOS and his own worst enemy.
I guess where I'm at now with this stuff is - who made them God to decide? They are as much of a deviation from hank or no show jones style as church or aldean. You could say the same with cash. He had some very very different stuff that didn't remotely sound like anything bill Monroe or hank would have recorded. It evolves.
Now I get that Garth, Carrie and Sam Hunt are just plain Ferkin terrible. But I have to disagree with the "that ain't real mommy partree" crowd on church and paisley. Even kenny has written some good stuff here and there. There's a lot of rock influence in the country guys our age - we were all exposed to Springsteen, gnr, etc. So I get it. I just think the "anti establishment" guys have gone too far in the other direction.
It's like how we talk about some in the libertarian circles. They are some of the most dogmatic you'll see. I'm seeing similarities now in the "anti" crowd in country music. Hell, I saw one page bashing Alan jackson. That's pretty hardcore.
-

Hogwash. If you don't sound exactly like Waylon and the outlaws, have both your arms tatted, and talk about doing cocaine - then you're just fake. Or so I heard.

Here it is in a nutshell. Define "country". Go ahead. All these "That ain't country" dissenters, give us the definition of country music so we'll be able to quantify what is and what isn't actual country music so there will be no more debate.
Don't tell us what you think ISN'T country. BTW, that will rule out 99% of the arguments. Tell us all what IS, so we'll be able to distinguish between the contenders and pretenders. Your definition.....GO!!
Oh, and one song by David Allan Coe doesn't count. Okay....now go... Give us all the definition of "Country Music".
-
I don't care what you call it. All of it sounds like a donkey spraying shit out of its ass.
Dickbell, Kenny Shitsney, Brad Gaysley, Gurgle, and all the rest of that crap is garbage can liner.
Country music is Charlie Daniels.

in reference to three artists that do not at all refer to themselves as country.
I didn't bring up Sturgill or Jinks. But yeah, to me they are much more representative of the purest form of the genre than the poppy bro stuff they play on the radio.
If that's your bag, I don't begrudge you, I just don't like it.
What defines it? To me? Acoustic guitars, a steel guitar, maybe a fiddle and/or banjo. Stripped down and not overproduced. Lyrics and vocals with soul that are closer to blues than hip hop or pop.
Hank Sr. is sort of the godfather of country. The outlaws of the 70s (Willie, Waylon, Merle, Coe, Cash, Kristofferson, etc.) popularized it.
To my ears, guys like Sturgill and Stapleton not only are thematically and aesthetically closer to those guys, but just audibly sound much closer them than guys like Sam Hunt or Cole Swindell. And I personally prefer the former to the latter. If you don't, knock yourself out. Doesn't bother me.

I'll give you Jackson, I'll give you half credit on Church, some of his shit is pop country, Paisley, is up in the air to me. I give that he is one hell of a guitarist, but he puts out too many poppy songs for my liking. I've listened to Sturgill a lot, interviews and music. He and Stapleton have the same producer and consider themselves friends. I don't think he was directing that at any one artist, but the industry as a whole. It was the rest of his interview that turned me off.
Maybe the anti-establishment has gone to far. It doesn't matter though. It's like the NFL, people are not going to stop listening to the new age poppy, hip-hopish country. So the others will play their music, and still make their millions and never have to work again. They will still get theirs.
I'm no country purist.

This is what I have tried to explain to you for eons. Chizad just said it better than I do. I don't consider todays country radio, country music. It's some country with a little steel guitar mixed in and with some rap lyrics. To me it is hip-hop, pop sound talking about somewhat "country" things. I don't begrudge anyone for liking it, I just wish they would call it something other than country. To me, it deserves it's on genre.

You put coke in your bourbon, you don't know shit.
And then there is this...........
-
Every single genre of music evolves. This is the phase country is going through. Think about how different polka music is today compared to even 10 years ago. Hardly recognizable. But do people still wear funny outfits and dance to it? Of course we...they do.
And Zamfir's Pan Flute music is no different. At first, I wasn't a fan of the changes in the arrangements between "The Lonely Shepherd" and "Bilitis". Thought the guy had sold out. But he, like most artists, realized that staying stagnant was not an option. And once I really delved into it and found that his fingering had not changed, it was apparent he had stayed true to himself, and his fans.
Very much like ZZ Top.

Growing up my dad loved Hank Jr. I've heard a lot of his popular stuff but never paid much attention to it. Really I just never liked the type of person who walked around singing country boy can survive. I never believed any of those types were actually country so I shunned Hank Jr.
Recently decided to listen to some of his stuff. His stuff that wasn't country boy can survive. Damn he's a good artist. I can see why the country music world had a hard time accepting him. Hell I hear as much blues and jazz as I do steal guitar.
But damn I like him.

Hey man, them ain't high heeled sneakers.

HOLY BALLS.
Isbell (and let's not forget the 400 Unit) puts on a fucking show. They're a tight fucking band and even when Isbell or Sadler steps out for a solo (either can melt your face) they don't get lost in a ten-minute Widespread/Phish jumblemess.
Setlist (in rough order):
Go It Alone
24 Frames
Something More Than Free
Hope the High Road
White Man's World
Codeine
Tupelo
Cumberland Gap
Decoration Day
Stockholm
Molotov
Songs She Sang in the Shower
Flying Over Water
Cover Me Up
Super 8
Encore:
Never Gonna Change
If We Were Vampires
Nice mix of old and new songs, though I would have subbed two others for "High Road" and "White Man's World." He's a much better songwriter when he's painting the corners and letting the listener fill in the story. Those two songs find him beating you over the head with obvious lyrics and it's so unlike Isbell that it seems forced and unnatural. The first encore gave the extra bonus of a call-and-response guitar duel between Isbell and Vaden...it was amazing.
If you have the chance, do yourself a favor and catch this band live.

Wanted to see if I'm the slow kid in class, late to catch on, or if someone else had stumbled upon this little bit of lyrical sorcery:
The last line of the first and third choruses of "New South Wales" is: God bless the busted boat that brings us back.
Lots of "b" sounds, right?
HE'S MAKING THE SPUTTERING SOUND OF AN OLD BOAT MOTOR!
I can't think of another instance of this...alliterative onomatopoeia??...in any other song. Can you?

Revisiting....
He was considered too pop and rock 35 years ago. “He ain’t his daddyâ€. “He’s too loudâ€.
Now hes considered one of the greats. It’s how county music is. It evolves. People adjust. Does it use traditional instruments. And talk about real problems and real people and real things? Yes is country. Lot of different flavors. Sometimes it takes time.
Hank Jr is a perfect example of this. Not every country artist is gonna sound like bill Monroe or hank or even Stapleton.

Way late in posting this, but I caught Isbell and company at the Gogue Performing Arts Center on opening weekend.
It's a really nice facility...from the outside. They kept the hoi polloi outside (the amphitheater venue is around the corner from the main entrance), but the sight lines were great and the acoustics/sound top notch.
My only real beef was that they had volunteers working the beer/liquor tents and the lines were loooooooooooooooooong. Not really a problem once the show started, since I was rooted to my spot, but made the pre-show kind of a pain in the ass.
Obligatory setlist:
Super 8
24 Frames
Hope the High Road
Something More Than Free
Overseas
Live Oak
Alabama Pines
Anxiety
White Man's World
Outfit
Last of My Kind
If We Were Vampires
Stockholm
Flying Over Water
Cover Me Up
????
Maybe It's Time (the Star is Born song)
Never Gonna Change
Outstanding show. Most of the band took a break for "Last of My Kind" through "Cover Me Up."

Got the new Isbell album yesterday.
It's a bit more subdued and introspective-sounding than The Nashville Sound, with no single jumping out at me on the first two listens.
Quick impressions:
"What've I Done to Help" starts so quickly it's a bit jarring. More of a chant than a classic song structure.
The chorus in "Dreamsicle" is a bit clunky, but the picture painted by the verse lyrics is classic Isbell
"Only Children" sounds like a bit of an ode to Patterson Hood (or some prior songwriting companion)
Really like the guitar work in "Overseas." He played this one live last time I saw him and it SOARS in concert.
"Running With Our Eyes Closed" features some nice, understated bluesy riffing.
Watch out for the paradoxically subtle and hard left turn in the narrative in "River."
"Be Afraid" is as close to a straight-up rocker that this album has. Also doubles as a call to action (political, presumably).
"St. Peter's Autograph" has a nice little hum-able melody, but lacked dynamic change to keep my interest (also fielded a phone call during this one)
"It Gets Easier"...some funny quips about his struggle against addiction. A message that hopefully resonates with those who need it.
"Letting You Go" is another one for his daughter.

You have always been a good writer. Or, should I say that you have always written well? You know.
I have always appreciated it, especially when you use the big words and so effortlessly. But, I just want to say that if you keep it up, I seriously believe that you are capable of writing something on par with kaos’ work one day.

It is cute at how hypersensitive and defensive this relationship is. At least from one side.
It is like a miniature version of Siegfried and Roy.

Before or after the tiger mauling?
I’d say pre-mauling. But speaking of tigers, this relationship may be more akin to Tiger King. I’m not sure who the third queer is, though.

You know what they say: if, after ten minutes, you can't spot the sucker at the table...it's you.

Regardless, I’m not a tiger in name only.
They all say that I’m a tiger in the sack, cowboy.

The HBO documentary, Running With Our Eyes Closed, is fan-fucking-tastic. Sam Jones (who did the amazing I Am Trying To Break Your Heart, documenting Wilco's YHF recording and distribution farce) gets some deeply personal footage and you get some context for a lot of his lyrical work. Great studio and archival concert footage (especially the DBT stuff) is icing on the cake.
If you're a fan (of Isbell or just music and songwriting) you'll dig the shit out of this.
Note: practically zero politics are addressed, it's much more personal than that.
-
New Isbell album dropped this past Friday and, friend, it is fan-fucking-tastic.
Solid songwriting, as expected, with his influences a bit more apparent than usual. I heard some pretty straight-forward references to Petty, Duane Allman, all of CSN&Y, some Santana. Shit, there's even an explicit reference to Son Volt.
Just prepare yourself for all the sentient bama bangs to scream "Vestavia Hills" at the next show.

Weathervanes, correct?

I'm sure that album is chock full of all manner of self-loathing and white guilt informed by a neo-liberal who read Howard Zinn and thinks he's not only cooler than the rest of the room, but smarter, too.
Pass. Hard pass.

This is why Ive always taken a pass on this dude. For every decent song he writes or sings, he has about 3-4 that are self loathing. He and Sturgill Simpson are 2 miserable sons of bitches. They, however, may fit right into the new political paradigm of Nashville Country Music.

You can add Ruston Kelly to that batch as well. Sad Bastage music, I call it.

I’m eternally grateful that not only have I never heard anything these people sing (loose interpretation, perhaps?), but I have never heard OF them. Would not recognize them if they shit on my porch.
Funny story. I know this one pathetically single woman at the gym who was gifted a cardboard cutout of some cowboy hat wearing douche for her birthday. I assume she jiggles the piggle to it and night but whatever. I assumed it was one of these new country posers. Turns out it is some guy, Rip Torn maybe?, from some tv show.

Isbell released an (relatively) unannounced solo acoustic album called Foxes in the Snow.
It is both a divorce album and a new love album. Some really strong songwriting, but the stripped down arrangements can get a little one-note.
That said, "Gravelweed" "Bury Me" "True Believer" and "Good While It Lasted" are songs that could have been on any album between Southeastern and Weathervanes.
