When debating the pros and cons of the Malzahn regime, the one thing I don't see stressed nearly enough is the complete void of outside experience that exists across the entire offensive coaching staff. It's the reason they stand around with their fingers up their asses not knowing what to do when things go awry. The entire staff simply does not have enough of a varied background to have any fresh ideas or any base of knowledge in past similar situations.
I've made my point about Gus having zero personal mentors and having never worked outside his own narrow base. That's a poisonous situation in and of itself. He has never had to thrive outside his own bubble.
But what about the rest of the staff?
Kevin Steele has been around. He's got a decent amount of experience and has seen other programs and coaches from the inside. So has Greg Brown.
Rodney Garner has been at Auburn under Dye and Bowden, Tennessee for a year under Fulmer and a bunch of years at Georgia under Donnan and Richt. Experience yes, but not really a vast amount.
With Steele, Brown, Garner in the mix that allows room for Travis Williams to grow into his role. Travis can rap. But his entire coaching resume is a year in high school and a year at Northern Iowa.
You can't argue that the defense is SEC quality with those four handing that side of the ball. They've been in the game long enough and been around enough successful coaches to know how to make things work.
Now the offense...
Chip Lindsey hasn't really been around the block. In and out at Southern Miss under Fedora, a year at Arizona State and a long-ago stint under Larry Blakeney at Troy. He's at Auburn because of his prior relationship with Gus. He's not a Top 10 coordinator in the SEC.
Kodi Burns. I like him as a person, but......Green as hell. Worked at Samford. Was at AZ State with Lindsey for a year. Gus' pet. He's not a SEC-level coach.
Herb Hand. Pfffttt. Co-offensive coordinator with Gus at Tulsa. The only place he coached offensive line before Auburn was Vandy for three years and then a year or so at Penn State. He was a tight ends coach at WVU. he might be okay, but he's not upper shelf.
Tim Horton. Arkansas and Auburn. The fuck.
Larry Porter. He's been around some, but I've never heard of him.
It just looks to me like Malzahn's offensive staff is made up of his buddies and pets and really doesn't have the gravitas an SEC staff should have. So when he's bumbling and fumbling around, there's nobody to tell him "Hey, when I was working for Tom Osborne at Nebraska, we tried....." All he has are people who kiss his ass.
-
Our D staff is one of the best in the country. T-Will is becoming a LB coach that will move up the ranks fairly quickly. As you said though, having Steele, Rodney and Brown around is helping him tremendously.
On O Porter has a he'll of a resume, but is out of place. TE and H backs? Really? Like we even utilize them anymore. Horton is a pretty good coach in my opinion and is supposedly well respected in coaching circles. The rest I am meh on.

Over under on that? I say 25 carries in the first half against TAMU will probably do it. We'll still win because Sumlin is as much a fucktard as Gus - maybe more so.
Oh, we'll make KJ's ass limp out there against Georgia and his career will end there. We'll lose by 20 to them. Boatrace ULM. Alabama will 49-0 our asses right out of Jordan Hare.
/The end

Dude - this defense has been had by lesser teams already this season. And when they get no support from the offense, won't be much they will or will care to do about it. Seen this movie. So have you. Don't be a dumbass.
-
It's Miller time Saturday. We'll probably throw in a swing pass to Barrett.

Don’t you be calling me no dumbass. Me?
Of all people. Why I oughta...

This is a very Tuberville-esque defense. Our overall stats are something I'd take every single year and take my chances. Through 8 games:
15.6 points per game allowed.
302 total yards per game
124 rushing (5 TD's)
!78 passing (7 TD's)
Some of those numbers are a little skewed with Ole Miss playing catch up all day and Shea Patterson flinging the ball all over the field 51 times. OM had 429 total yards. 346 of those passing.

And there was quite a bit of 2nd and 3rd string guys getting some reps.

I had no idea about the numbers but those look pretty good.
Eye test? We have a few that will knock a snot bubble in you. That’s my gauge.
Not going to say they are Dye era tenacious but they are more athletic overall, I believe. And the D line? Lights out.

If you’ve been on the receiving end of a snot bubble hit, you know what I’m talking about.
There aren’t many on here tough enough to endure. But WT has blown a few snot bubbles.

So we are a 14 point favorite going into College Station this weekend. I guess Vegas thinks Sumlin's doneski there. I heard somewhere they might play a different QB this weekend. How many of those do they even have? Auburn should blow them out but I bet our bumblefoots screw around and coach this team so badly it stays closer than it should.
Sucks, this does.

I liked ear holing people, I never stood there to check if bubbles were coming out of their noses as they laid there motionless or crying.

The QB that started the first game against UCLA got hurt in that game. The freshman, Mond (sp?), has played since. He got snot bubbled by the Bullpuppies and they put the first guy back in for the first time since UCLA.

This was about football, not sexual acts. Sounds kinky but whatever, I guess.

The TAMU QB we will see is Nick Scarface. He got the early nod and was benched.
-
Starkel got injured against UCLA and was finally ready the day of the MSU game. Sumlin announced Kellen Mond will start against us. Banged up against the Bullpuppies but should be ready to go Saturday. Got to put some AU heat on the true freshman.

Mond played better than anyone could have predicted v. the Turds. I expect he will be in Montegna form against us.

It's possible, but I like our chances against a true frosh even this late in his first season. Our D-line is pretty active and should keep him uncomfortable. As long as we keep containment out wide, I think our defense can keep the A&M offense mostly bottled up.
#3 is going to be a problem on special teams. I hope those guys are up to the task.
-
Stocky will look like Tom Brady against this secondary. It will take their defense exactly 2 series to figure out our offensive game plan. Combine those two with our wonderful kick coverage and I see a 20 point loss for the storm troopers.

In fairness, our secondary has been missing Matthews and JDavis pretty badly. With their (presumed) return this weekend, they should be back to their early season form.

Here's the thing. I have no doubt in my mind that the only team with more overall talent in this league than us is Bama. Simply because I'm a firm believer that while mowr starz are not an indicator of success for an individual player at the next level, compiling mowr starz players does....or should. Auburn can put a 4 or 5 star guy at every single position on the field, both sides of the ball, and usually bring in no less than a 4 star as a back up.
So when you have that much talent, it simply comes down to development and coaching. It comes down to the staff. I'm 100% certain we have more talent than A&M. I'm also 100% certain we've had more talent than everyone we've played with maybe the exception of Clemson. I'd say equal across the board. But who knows what's going to happen Saturday. We could blow their doors in by 30. Or the more likely scenario is that we kick 3 field goals.
The stretch run is on. There's an ass load to play for. You win out and who knows? It would mean beating #1 and #2. But there's the problem. Gus knows how important every game is starting Saturday. Does anyone here honestly believe he's going to let his OC handle the offense? I have zero faith in that happening. You may as well grab a box of handcuffs and pass them out to the offensive players and tell them to put em' on.
I'm sorry. I'll be right there pulling for them every single play. But I've lost all confidence in Gus Malpractice staying the hell out of the way.

Tee time at 11:20am Sat. This season Gus drained what hope I had for any kind of fun in Auburn football this year. There is a difference in getting beat by better teams and getting beat by your own head coach.

What I have noticed, and so have all of you, is that Gus is running the same plays as if he was still doing the HUNH. Problem with that is that we aren't snapping the ball as soon as it's set. We wait, clap, look over to sidelines, clap again and run it up the middle into the awaiting arms of the opposing players.

You couldn't be more wrong if you tried. Sometimes we go on the first clap.
