Title: Plainsman: Bye Jacobs
Post by: Kaos on September 06, 2017, 11:36:36 PM
http://www.theplainsman.com/article/2017/09/editorial-for-the-good-of-auburn-jay-jacobs-should-go

But good intentions aside, Jacob’s handling of the allegations has been at best negligent and at worst crooked, and he needs to step down or be removed from his position so Auburn can move forward. Jenkins, who appears not to have done her job as an advocate for victims, should go with him.

Sorry but I just don't agree. As you said last week - there are many things I think he should be fired for from the last ten years. This isn't one of them. There just isn't enough there with this case as far as jay goes and malice. I don't see it. Corey and Clint, sure. Not Jay.

Didn't say I agreed.  Just provided it for discussion.

I know Jay to be pompous glad-handing ass.  He considers himself to be the consummate Auburn Man. I consider him the anthesis. He's all about self promotion. He's smarmy as hell. He sucks up to people he thinks can benefit him and looks down on anyone he considers lesser.  I also find him sanctimonious.  His decisions to hire both Chizik and Malzahn were suspect and based on his faith more than performance. We overpaid both.

I don't much care for his vision for Auburn. That stupid giant TV. Corporatizing gameday.

I don't like the waves of cheese that emanate from every statement he makes or releases. I didn't like the way he treated Tuberville.  Or Muschamp (the first time). Or Rocker.

I think he is massively unqualified for the position he holds.

All that in the books?  I just don't see the hanging offense here.

You've got one disgruntled girl crying because she wasn't good enough to make the team.  You've got super dad rushing in to defend his baby girl.

I've been there.  When I started coaching high school softball I had 25 girls try out. I was only keeping 15. One of the ten I cut had her dad her dad go to the principal and the board. His baby girl was an all star in Dixie League!  Demanded I do tryouts over and be "more fair"  Board backed me up. She sucked. Was an all star because daddy dearest was her coach. That guy hated me.

This dad has already declared her high school coach incompetent. Demanded she be allowed to play baseball. Moved to Auburn. Had her turn down smaller offers to walk on at AU -- and then get his ass chapped when she wasn't good enough.

They are cancers.

I don't like Jay.  But his future shouldn't hinge on some unverified "feels" from a spurned brat and her butthurt daddy.

The next few Fridays will feature some "big" announcements about administrative changes at the university coming from the new President who is shaking the trees. The Provost already announced his retirement and word on the concourse is there will be many more moves in restructuring. Stay tuned.

The only thing I can see being unseemly with Jay is that he was asked about it on April 27th, he said he had no knowledge of an investigation, even though it was opened in Fall 2016.

It borders on semantics though. Of course he's not going to offer up red meat to the media. Would almost be irresponsible and a violation of coaches and players privacy to comment on it at the time. He probably should have said something more like "We don't comment on investigations" or something to that effect. Instead now he's getting pegged as a liar, and to a degree maybe it's justified.

All that said, I stand by the fact that the whole story is grossly overblown from the facts that we know. Marginal bench warmer was mad she was a bench warmer and wanted to burn the whole program down. Meyer's son was fuckin around on his wife with young, but completely consenting adult strange, and was let go for it. That's the long and short of it, from what I can tell.

Personality preferences aside, you're gonna be hard pressed to find an AD in 2017 who is not focused on this type of stuff. As well they should be insofar as the job title requires.

Maybe so.  Maybe I'm just a "get off my lawn" kind of guy.

I just don't favor turning college football into a mini-NFL experience.  I like cheerleaders, bands,  the student section doing its thing.

It's filtering down to the high schools too.  Last week at Daphne they unveiled their new video scoreboard (paid for by TJ Yeldon primarily).  Noise blaring from it all game long, 80% of the screen was taken up by ads and the occasional REALLY shitty team promo. The things I was most interested in (stats, score, timeouts, clock) were so small I could barely read them.  It was exponentially worse than the old lightbulb scoreboard in terms of providing me any relevant information.

BOTH teams ran out in a fog of fire-extinguisher smoke.  You could barely hear either band for the PA announcer bellowing ridiculous shit like "Boom!! Dat's how we PUULAAAAY!" or the canned music between every down or the ads pouring from the video board.

It was awful.  It's the same at Spanish Fort.  Loud ass music drowning out the band, a dumbass announcer yakking it up, ad after ad after ad.

Not Jay Jacobs' fault.  I guess he's just following the trends.  But I hate it.

Every AD (and for that matter, Higher Ed Administrator) nowadays has one edict. Have the best stuff and make the most money from it without it costing much or anything. Get is paid for by someone else and keep all the profit. The "college bubble" is not far from bursting.

That PA stuff right there ^ - that drives me up the wall. You aren't the radio team. Give the yards gained, down, and distance. Call a score when it happens without the commentary. I would like to shove a microphone up a few of those loud mouth's asses, stick the amp in the pool, and wait for the fun to start. Hate hate hate that shit right there.

Plainsman stance is dumb. Meredith and Jay for this spoiled daddy girl? Uhhhh, no. Will need to give me more evidence that they were protecting Clint or covering up.

I don't like Jacobs for all of the reasons k has listed. But this is not a justifiable reason to can him. Plainsman staff is just a bunch of pretend world, left leaning do-gooders who are more concerned with the PR than being just.

I think there are 3.

I should have prefaced that I didn't agree with the article. Not K's post.

I think the whole situation was unfortunate. But I don't see any malicious intent by Jay. I don't think highly of our 2 former coaches.

Any of you guys that were on that campus when I was in the mid/late 90s remember the witch hunts like this on Lowder. That paper is mostly sjw garbage. Always has been.

AUBURN, Ala. — Auburn is planning to move forward with plans to erect a new videoboard in the north end zone inside Jordan-Hare Stadium before the 2018 season

The project will be presented to the Auburn University Board of Trustees on Sept. 15 for approval of project initiation and engineer selection. It appears the project is part of Auburn’s $61.7 million in facility upgrades across all sports.

The athletics department wants to select LYBD Inc., of Birmingham as the project engineer. The company was “instrumental” in the design phase for the videoboard in the south end zone, which is the largest in college football.

The videoboard will be considerably smaller than videoboard in the north end zone, but it will be larger than the current scoreboard above the stands.

It appears Auburn seeking approval for the new videoboard could indefinitely wipe out plans to tear down and renovate the north end zone grandstands, which underwent several design plans over the last three years before being placed on the backburner.

Auburn is also seeking approval for project initiations on renovations to the men’s and women’s basketball locker rooms (at least $3 million), and player-development buildings for baseball ($4.8 million) and softball ($4.8 million). Both facilities will include indoor batting cages. The softball project will include an indoor practice field and also additional seating inside Jane B. Moore Field.

Construction is already underway on a $28 million game-day facility and renovation project at Jordan-Hare Stadium, where an additional building is being erected i the southwest corner.

I see no point in getting rid of Gus, if we first don't get rid of Jacobs. Otherwise, we are back here in 5 seasons.

That's the problem. The guy makes the program so much money while representing charitable causes that he almost has to harpoon himself.
