I was shocked at how I was able to get back on the Gus Bus. After beating Arkansas 56-3 - an opponent that was ranked in the top 20 - I started really believing that Gus could be our long term answer.
I'm off the bus again.
The SEC West was on the line. If we lose, Alabama goes to Atlanta no matter what. We're 2-8 against Georgia in the last ten games. They were fucking awful going into today.
And we can't win?
Not only that, we can't get one first down in the 2nd half? Our offensive genius is so locked onto one or two freakishly talented players that when they're out, we go limp dick until the clock strikes 0 and we lose?
Today's game is perfect for champions. Guys that make millions of dollars coaching football dream of getting into these kind of situations. A top rival standing in the way of a fucking championship. You instill that dream into your players and promise them that this season will provide true moments of competition where it's all on the line.
And Gus failed. He failed hard. He not only failed, he failed at the one thing he's supposed to be good at: offense. He recruited every single of one of his quarterbacks, and if Sean White really was too injured to play QB, he should have had some kind of back up plan.
Considering weeks 1-4 showcased the same kind of ineptitude, I think there needs to be a serious discussion about Gus being here any longer. That's what I think. I'm sure Jacobs and Company will give him another year. The stretch from LSU-Ole Miss was good enough.
And I'm sitting here watching some night time football realizing that the stars were aligning for us to have a special year. Louisville is down by 9 to Wake Forest at the half. Clemson lost. Washington is losing to USC close to the half. Michigan and Ohio State still have to play each other.
We're in if we can beat Georgia and Alabama.
But we've been let down by poor coaching and terrible program building.
We had no business losing to Florida State in 2013. We were too talented to have a subpar season in 2014. 2015 was an awful rebuilding year. 2016 is unacceptable.
I get that 2013 was special after 2012. We had the biggest Iron Bowl victory in history, and that matters. We won an SEC champioship, and that matters.
But like Gene Chizik, the writing is on the wall. One season can be special but a program must be established by year 4.
And as usual over the past decade, Jay Jacobs is the only real constant.
Drain the swamp.

In addition to my thoughts in the game thread, I think I think these things as well:
1) Our WRs reverted back to week 1-4 form for some reason. Can't blame the "freshman wall" since Davis and Stevens were the most egregious offenders yesterday. Some of SW's throws were off the mark, but some very catchable balls ended up on the turf yesterday.
2) The stubborn insistence on passing in the 2nd half after the 3rd time the O went 3-and-out was a depressing display of ego on the part of whomever is calling plays right now.
3) A hobbled KJ has no place on the KO return team. BUT if he's going to be out there, he should absolutely know to NOT bring the ball out of the EZ from 3 yards deep. Kid has no acceleration right now.
4) Running that shitshow whirlybird FB wildcat needs to be outlawed. We could have possibly pieced together a running game with our lead blocker. But he got hurt...running a play that has not been successful all season.
5) All of that said, not many teams who lose their starting QB (or have him rendered so impaired as to be more liability than asset), RB1 (SEC leader in yards and ypg), and lead blocker are going to light up the scoreboard during a conference road game in the SEC. But there are still playmakers on the bench and a "genius" should have some strategies to work around those personnel losses.
This was a replay of the Clemson/A&M games (and, to a lesser extent, every game pre-LaMo) and it depresses me so much to know that this coaching staff isn't LEARNING FROM THEIR GODDAMNED MISTAKES. We were poised to make real post-season noise (would have been top 5 today) if only the transgressions of the early season had been analyzed and the lessons therefrom applied in a manner befitting our $4M genius.
He's not gone...and I don't want him gone yet (when this offense is rolling, it is so much fun to watch and there is finally a defense to match with it). Unless we can get Les Miles. That's fantasy, though, and the reality is that Gus will be here next year along with the vast majority of this offense. When they're healthy, the future is bright. Now Gus needs to work on the "Plan B" section of his playbook.
-
Could we have run zero pass plays and won the game?
What about Malik? I know he had a horrendously bad play with missing that catch, but to at least give KJ some rest plays?
Why not more Truitt?
If Sean White was so injured that he hasn't thrown a ball in weeks and he was awful in the 1st half AND he opened the 2nd half with a fucking pick 6, why did we elect the throw the ball every god damn down afterwards?
After the third or fourth three and out due to failed passes, why was JFIII not put in? It's not like he hasn't had any playing time. Maybe we lose with him anyway.
But to think an injured player that had already given the other team 6 points was going to save the day was complete buffoonery. Similar buffoonery to the beginning of the season.
Auburn shouldn't have to deal with this. Ever. Not one season.

The Plan B yesterday should have been having another QB ready to step in. But sadly, despite 2 weeks of the back ups reportedly taking snaps, they still didn't feel like they had anybody else to turn to.
A Plan B for his offense is, has been and always will be, non-existent. In one sense, Malzahn is no different than Paul Johnson or any number of coaches who are completely set in their ways and/or their ability or lack thereof, to adapt. Wes, you said when the offense is rolling, it's fun to watch. Troof. But chapters 1,2,3,4 and everyone thereafter in his book state that it can only roll when we're snapping it fast and hitting the middle of the line for 4 to 7 yards or more a pop. Do it again. Hit it again and again and again. Everything else works off of that. If that ain't working, the offense is dead in the water. Simple as that.
Pettway was out. KJ is maybe 65% and not the back for that job anyway. When that option is not available, he turned to a QB that is maybe 45%. And like you said, nobody stepped up to help a brother. Malzahn is no jeenyus. His offense is what it is and if the one thing he has to have to make it work is not available, you get yesterday. He's not changing any more than Les Miles would.

You are correct. But I can tell you from small time experience, when a player is open because the D gave it to you and you call it only to have a player let you down, there is no plan B for that. But I hear what you are saying.
Someone mentioned WRs game 1-4 sucking. Well, Stevens got hurt and the freshmen took over. Guess who is back.
Where was Kyle Davis? Is he hurt? Where was a series with JF3. No, he can't pass, but they have to respect him. All we needed was one good driver!
Very frustrating that we could not bullshit our way through a game against a terribly shitty uga tem!
-
Malik out for the year?
Talked to his old HS position coach at work. He said expect KJ to always have ankle issues and that Malik really needs a year of weights and maturing. Said Malik told him he could play but wasn't 100% either and really needs the medical red shirt.

You guys Are action g like we had a plan A this year.
Everybody so far has just grabbed hold of the ride and hoped it wouldn't end.
We are lucky to be here. Get healthy and beat bama.

I'm just guessing here, but I'm pretty sure you just insulted us.
What's an action g?
You know what? Had Malzahn gone to Clifford Franklin XVIII and then came out and said, "Look, Sean's injured and we couldn't keep him out there. Pettway's out, KJ is really banged up as is Stanton Truitt." I think we'd all be able to take this one a bit better.
Think about this. From the end of spring until where we are today. No Jovon Robinson. No Roc Thomas. No Malik Miller. No Pettway. Kerryon Johnson half speed. Stanton Truitt limping around. Kam Martin can't catch and he's 137 pounds. If our QB is injured like he looks to be....

Agree with all of this.
We can argue about how we got here, but the above is unadulterated troof.

We are playing Alabama A&M on the SECN (I assume alternate) at 630 PM Central this Saturday. So we have that going for us.

And my ample sized ass will be in seat 9 (And part of seats 8 and 10), row 44, Section 8. But first, I'll be outside the north end of the stadium watching what will probably be the best show of the day.

I'm tired of the runaround. You say Call Me now but the min I do you're nowhere to be found. Probably off somewhere with some floozie drinking dcp instead of with m....I mean yeah I'll be at the game too. Should be a good one. The halftime show will be the titz.

Damn it, that guy is no flooz....err...yeah...I can see Franklin getting 100 yards rushing Saturday.
Umm, totally.

Not a fan of draining the swamp but heads should roll if Pettway and White suit up for Alabama A&M.

This one may hurt but the other side even knew what our problem was.

Agree with everything but this. I thought KJ has looked like a damn good back when healthy. He also looked really good first half of the game Saturday. Not sure if his ankle gave out on him at half time or what.
Also, I think Truitt got hurt the first series which is why he never went back in.

Yep, I imagine you're spot on here if KJ is healthy. I guess that's more my issue in that even going back to last year, he seems to stay dinged up.

I'm just saying g, it took us four games to really settle on a QB. We see how long it takes to settle on a backup.
They have e no clue who should be backup. JJ got kadrill-ad. JF3 is lost as hell out there. Half the time he should pull and run but he has no idea.
Where is Queen? Is he healed up yet? Or is he essentially done?
But I was wanting to see Jf3 in a couple if series. Just how lost is he!
Hell, I would not have complained had they thrown JJ6 out there.
Why no TE quick pass? I was hoping he would get more involved.
Without Pettway's 6 yard average on first down, our coaches are lost!
-
I have zero argument with the lack of a plan B being a HUGE issue with this staff.

JJ typically performs well when he isn't "the guy". Ark in 14. Aggie and Bowl Game in 15. When he comes off the bench unexpectedly he tends to do better. When he has an entire week or summer to fester the thought of having to play - that's when he nuts up. I thought he would have been a better option against vandy. Get the game in hand, no need to ride Pettway like a mule - then he and Sean are both healthy for Uga. Woulda coulda shoulda though. Gus' screwup. He sucks at teh backup plans.

Truth!
Why will they not even consider JJ at all? God help us if White is still hurt for bama and they start JJ! But that would be par for the management so far.

I believe that GF will enlighten us in due time. His skreetz are paved in....well, they're mostly paved. A few potholes here and there, but nothing you can't navigate around.

I know folks are pissed. I'm just NOT.
After Jovon got railroaded, I thought we were done. I figured white could keep us competitive if he could stay healthy. And I thought KJ might surprise me. I'm not a fan of his running style, but I love to see the kid play.
Then the younguns started showing out at WR. (When Stevens got hurt and quote dropping balls) Pettway got his shot and bulldozed past 1000 yards(quickly). I knew if we could stay healthy, we would do some damage. When White did not start Vandy, I resigned myself that we are in trouble. When Pettway went down, I damn near cried.
But like you, I thought we could limp by uga. I didn't realize that Pettway's first down average was as monster as it is(100 rushes, 600 yards). That hides a lot of issues.
One thing I am excited about is next season. We get Malik back healthy and find a backup for SW and we are a damn talented team on offense.
We all stated 8-9 wins would keep CGM. And the we all got too excited thinking we aren't really who we are.
With a healthy Pettway and White, we make a good run at the turds and a nice bowl.
But OMG, one more loss like that to uga and I really don't care who is in charge, dump them!

If Gus and company are not grooming woody right now for the future then he is useless. Kid is all world and tailor made for this offense.

That was my caveat when I said "find a backup for White"!
But then they have screwed up every other "perfect for this system" QB so far!
Still no info on Queen. Is he pretty much done?

The last info I had on Queen was that he was still healing from the Tommy John surgery.

I am super pissed and disappointed at losing to UGA. They are a subpar team and I thought we were once again out coached.
As far as the rest of the season: I really didn't care about the playoffs, I wanted to win the SEC (now I figured that if we won the SEC we would probably get into the playoffs) but I also didn't think we were ready for that. That being said I also knew we had to have a tremendous game in which we would have had to play perfect to win in BDS. I also figured that losing Pettway also probably meant losing to bama.
Here is where I am with Gus. I really have no faith in Jacobs to get us a better coach so until he is gone, I really don't want to have a coaching search. I have no major problems with Gus retaining his position for next year. We are where I thought we would be 8 wins.
My biggest issues with him though is he continues to be what everyone else has laid out and seems to not learn from past mistakes.
- Lacking in Player Development
- Ability to spot players (why was Pettway an H-back?) or make appropriate changes (ie. no plan B). (this is what has me scratching my head the most, I am not a HC of a major college school just a fanatical fan, but if I and 87,000 people see the issue and you don't WTF?!?)
- Continuing these same trends over and over.
I think what the majority of us are pissed about in general is the way we lost the games. In all three of these losses it has been offensive issues and mind boggling play calling and this isn't the first year of this shite.

I have no problem with "player development" with one glaring exception, and that of course, is at QB. And that's the one area that Malzahn is directly involved in, or should be. Lashlee is listed as the QB corch but that position and this offense is Gus' baby. He's been way too hit and miss in his career. I'm not one to dismiss his successes. I'll give credit where it's due and I applaud him and the staff for getting this 6'0" 200 lb. kid coached up to where he was one of the more efficient passers in the nation and at times, a pretty effective runner.
I do have an issue with what we have on the roster behind White and the lack of any confidence whatsoever by the coaches and even the fans, that any of them can get the job done. I hated the Clifford Franklin XXVVIV signing from the start. I took one look at his resume and asked WTF are they doing? If a 6'5" 230 pound Mr. Alabama Football is a head case, then do your job and UNfuck it. And if JJ hasn't been in the rotation as far as reps and being ready to play, you damn sure had better be getting Woody Barrett groomed to play, if need be. Apparently, we have Franklin VIIXV and comatose bench warmer next in line if Sean can't go.
Now, on Pettway. I can't put that on Malzahn. I have to assume the position coaches are allowed to do their jobs. Herb Hand is responsible for getting 5 guys ready to play together. I'm quite sure Kodi Burns sets the rotations at receiver or at least submits that to Malzahn. And it's Tim Horton's job to say who is best able to get the job done. I doubt we're going to hear later down the road that Horton was begging Malzahn to give Pettway a chance and Gus just brushed him off. Plus, in certain cases, a player might freeze up when the lights come on...JJ....or the opposite happens. Maybe Pettway needs the bright lights and adrenaline rush to kick it up a notch.

Pettway should not have been needed that much that late in the vandy game. End of story. And he was needed that much directly because of our dumbass coach. Who somehow thought a salty front 7 like vandys wouldn't sell out to stop the run knowing that little asshat couldn't pass. It was dumb. At least Jeremy can hit a damn pass when he isn't overthinking it. I truly believe Jeremy would have had an Aggie game 2015 like performance if he had been placed in that game at the last minute. No white or Pettway would have been needed. Both would have been there for Uga. Ughhhhhh.

I'm not referring to the Pettway injury. Just the suggestion that it's Malzahn's fault for not recognizing the back the guy could become.

That too.
Well with jovon, roc and kj in the fold at the time I can forgive that one. Somewhat. Maybe. Kinda. Sorta.

I have been screaming this all. damn. season. and I don't understand why it's such an impossible concept for our coaches to grasp.
There is no QB controversy with Franklin. He is a subpar passer, which is the primary duty of the quarterback. THAT SAID, it is evident that when he is in, the ground game opens up significantly because of the real threat he poses to run it for 15+ yards. WHY THE FUCK don't we put him in for situational packages like 4th & 1 or goal line type situations? WHY THE FUCK didn't they give him a shot in that second half when the results were Pick-6, 3-and-out, 3-and-out, 3-and-out, 3-and-out, 3-and-out, 4-and-out. SOMEWHERE IN THERE it didn't occur to them to mix it the fuck up? Especially when Pettway was out and appearently White was hobbled. They had obviously adjusted to Kerryon at the half. They are incapable to mix it up whatsoever when shit is not working. Definition of insanity.

Gus only likes to mix it up when things are working.

Work on some things. Take it day to day. Just trying to get better. It's been a good week of practice. The guys are doing what they need to do. Alabama a&m def has our attention.

Damn you, Gus. Hacking someone's account is illegal. I'm calling GH right now and letting him know what you've done.

Our coaches have two plans on offense.
Plan A.
When that fails they go to the second plan.
Plan Ahh Screw It.
Destined to be chained to a consistent 8-4 (at best) if we keep this up going forward.

Like LSU with Les(s)?

Yeah except our AD is never gonna fire him start of a season. What am I saying? He's never gonna fire him at all! Maybe Malzahn can learn how to coach in the SEC after 10 or 15 years.
We'll probably all be dead from the cancer the Jacobs-O-Tron is giving us though.
Or Trump protestors will kill us.
-
That was my caveat when I said "find a backup for White"!
But then they have screwed up every other "perfect for this system" QB so far!
Still no info on Queen. Is he pretty much done?
WOTS...Yes, Queen is done.

Yup, two plans.
The first plan fails, they move to the second one...which is the nearly same as the first plan, except it adds in the whirlybird play.

Hey that shoot worked for Chand Cox in high school...so makes sense our high school coach would try it.
I can see it now. We are going to go into the Ironless Bowl running the same shoot plan we ran against Clemson. Unlike there, we will get straight up murdered.
Truthfully, I think Plan A is currently #3 on the depth chart at QB. Plan B has been playing most of the year and his arm is made out of the same rubber bands Chris Todd's was. So unless Dr. McCoy is swinging through town to save some spotted owls and turbo zaps SW13 Burn One's arm and heals it, we furked.

Montgomery Advertiser writer named Stevens gave his version of the failures in recruitment of QBs less than two days ago. Even shows a tweet by Lamar Jackson once he got the word that Auburn was interested and who Auburn chose instead.
I couldn't pull the link up (maybe someone will) and don't necessarily believe it all in fact as in most cases the truth is somewhere in-between. Not really the type of QB Petrino would normally recruit right?
TIMING!
And toward the end Steven's mentions Jake Bentley as a miss as if it were a foregone conclusion that he would follow his mercenary consultant father to AU where they were about 5 deep at that time. Then mysteriously Muschamp bolts with Dad in tow to USCe where the AD claims Boom was always his first choice.
Long article but worth a look.
My question is: Why recruit a pro-style passer when your team and recent success is built as a power spread team?

Lamar Jackson made the correct choice. If he would've signed with Auburn he'd need atleast two years in the Malzahn/Lashlee system of teaching the QBs how to hurry up and run the next play, and reading the pictonary cards on the sidelines...that's it.

Yeah well the writer indicated that Jackson was a 3* recruit. No mention of his reading level.

He, Jameis, and Nick Marshall would give a Closed Caption writer a mental breakdown.

Would it be acceptable to blow up a picture of Petrino'd head and bring it to the game Saturday?

Sadly this is true
