Report: Auburn assistant to interview with Cincinnati

Is more change coming at Auburn?

Perhaps so.

Auburn offensive line coach J.B. Grimes, is set to interview for a position on the Cincinnati coaching staff, a source told AL.com’s Brandon Marcello.

Cincinnati is coached by former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville, who will interview Grimes on Sunday. Grimes has been an assistant under Auburn coach Gus Malzahn dating back to the tandem’s time together at Arkansas State in 2012.

A link between Grimes and Cincinnati: Grimes’ son, Nick, is a graduate assistant with the Bearcats.

If offered a position, Grimes is expected to leave Auburn and accept a job with the team, a source told Marcello.

Under Grimes, Auburn finished fifth in the SEC and No. 35 in the nation in rushing in 2015. The Tigers’ rushing attack averaged 196.31 yards per game.

In 2013, Auburn became the first SEC school to lead the nation in rushing.

Marcello named Penn State offensive line coach Herb Hand as a potential replacement for Grimes, should he leave. Hand is close friends with Malzahn and coached together at Tulsa.

Btw, Coach Malzahn was looking to move JB. Grimes to a off-field role...his health is pretty bad, apparently. But, leave it to Marshmellow to try and paint it like people are jumping ship. Herb Hand would be a very nice replacement (he was the Co-OC at Tulsa with Malzahn).

Rhett needs to just sit back and concentrate on QBs now, or find another job elsewhere...Cincinnati maybe.

Hand's name is being thrown around Twitter.

If his health is bad, that's one thing. If he's capable, I'd really hate to lose Grimes.  I think the guy is one of the best and he knows how to coach the blocking scheme in Malzahn's offense.  Also, if his health really is bad, why would Tuberville try to hire him?

His named was mentioned in the article too, which tells me that Grimes and Gus have known this for sometime and Hand probably knew about all of this as well. Pretty sure Herbie as the new OL coach was a done deal already....IMO.

As long as Snaggle doesn't have his, this won't change.

This is the only coach I would really hate to lose.

Don't care about the mass exodus with Mushamp, wish Lashlee could get a job but Grimes is a made man. Solid as a rock and multidimensional. Most are good teachers, good recruiters and/or good on game day. Grimes is a rare one and has it all.

I don't blame him for wanting to be with his son. But Cincy?

I am concerned about the direction of the program if he does leave. It's not a dagger but the exodus and DC hire have me scratching my head.

So, it's just a coinkydink that Steele's brother works for AU? And he only has 5 yrs at DC. Looks like LSU and UT upgraded at DC and we downgraded to me. May I please be wrong.

Herbie Handcock is another great recruiter and hell of a OL Coach. Before anyone brings up that PSU's QB was sacked a lot should know two things, Hackenberg has been known to hold the ball a little to long and PSU had 8 scholarship OLinemen total (that includes the incoming freshmen), so Coach Hand really didn't have much to work with, to say the least.

#WOTS it's already a done deal and will be announced soon, Herbie will be Auburn's new OL Coach.

Now, we have to wait and see if someone hopefully thinks Lashlee is a good coach and offers him a job. Also, Coach Horton might be on the move too.

Yup.

Side note...remember a few years ago I said that Vanderbilt and Ole Miss would be the next two SEC teams to go on NCAA probation? We just hired both of their bagmen (Herbie at Vanderbilt & McGriff at Ole Miss). I still think Ole Miss will be the next team to get hit, because they haven't stopped paying recruits (outbidding bama on a handful)

We all want the hand. Hand is tough to get. You gotta get the hand right from the opening.

Proof of what? Me saying that? Go look through my history of posts, it was a couple of years ago. Or proof that Vanderbilt and Ole Miss we're buying players? Ole Miss is still buying them, Vanderbilt has stopped or isn't doing it to the extent to raise the NCAA's attention anymore.

I'm guessing you don't think bama buys players either. If that's true, you apparently don't follow recruiting...like at all. But if you do think bama buys players, then you apparently haven't realised that Ole Miss has beaten them for a number of big time players these past few years, and some bama boosters are not happy about it.

No. I think every program has "people" who "take care of" players for them. EVERY SINGLE ONE. Sun Belt to the SEC. Football being an arms race (an under the table one) is nothing new. However, just like you, I have no proof of this. Just intuition. Also, it doesn't matter. Getting players isn't the problem at Auburn.
