Title: Steve Spurrier Retires - The OBC Hangs Up His Visor

Quote
The Head Ball Coach is hanging up his visor, FootballScoop can confirm. Sports Illustrated first reported the news Monday evening.

An interim head coach will be named Tuesday morning at 8:30 ET.

A true original in every sense of the word, Spurrier won a Heisman Trophy as a Florida quarterback in 1966, then returned to his alma mater in 1990 and turned the Gators into a juggernaut. His Fun ‘n’ Gun system was ahead of its time, plowing through SEC defenses to the tune of eight top 10 finishes in a dozen seasons, a school-record 122 wins and a national championship in 1996.

After a brief stint with the NFL’s Washington Redskins, Spurrier returned to the college game at South Carolina in 2005 and took to the Gamecocks to heights previously unreached, peaking with an unprecedented SEC East championship in 2010 and three straight 11-2 seasons from 2011-13.

Looks like he won't finish the season.

This makes me feel old. Spurrier's always been part of college football.

That's a shitty way to go.

Makes me feel less respect toward him.  Unless he has health problems (like is dying), is getting a divorce, his kids are in peril or is about to get the NCAA hammer he should be a man and ride his shitty season to the ground.

Gene Chizik was man enough to do it. So was Tommy Tuberville -- twice.

This is a pussy move and I don't like it one bit.

Maybe he doesn't have that option.  Maybe it was retire with the grace you deserve, or be fired.

Knee-jerk motherfucker.  Like you said: some more info might gut your initial reaction.  Give it a day or two before you call the guy a pussy.

The man is 71 years old or so and he's a legend. If your scenario is the case, I would force them to fire me - unless they were paying my membership at Augusta for the rest of my days as part of my severance package.

Not sure if anyone else saw him on the sidelines last weekend against LSU, but he looked absolutely worn out. I'm thinking it's a health issue.

No thanks.

I said pretty clearly that unless it was one of those perilous type situations this was a pussy move.

That's undeniable.

Also undeniable is that if SC forced his hand, unless they caught him with Nick Saban's daughter and a goat (one in the same), or pulling a Sandusky they owed him the right to finish the season out.

There's no way a mid-season bail is the right way to go unless there's something dire going on personally.

It was shitty when Bowden threw his tantrum and got forced out.  It's shitty now.  The move of a giant puss. Unless.

I only know he would utilize all of the playmakers we currently have. Not saying our record would improve.

Hanging on just to finish out might appeal to some but whomever takes over has some mulligans to work with in the reconstruct. It's possible Spurrier is thinking along those lines.

The man has earned, from me at least, the benefit of the doubt.  He's never been a pussy, and I doubt he'll start now.

Premature, knee-jerk bullshit to call him out before you know why he's leaving.

I hate that he's going out mid season and while losing but as long as it's of his own choosing, I'm good. Regardless of health or extenuating circumstances. He's earned the right to exit as he wishes.

If the A.D. encouraged him to step down at season's end, I can see Spurrier making the jump now. Can't say that I blame him. He's taken that program from the outhouse to the top of the east. And as a legendary figure, he deserves at least another season to right the ship, imo.

Good luck to usc in finding a coach anywhere near his caliber. He was a homerun for them.

Thayer Evens first reported this, I don't know that I'm buying it until I hear it come out of the HBC's mouth.  I have yet to see it confirmed by South Carolina.

Just saying.

Hey buddy, don't be calling my friend a knee-jerk. Now, he may be a knee-jerk but he's our knee-jerk.

His press conference after LSU, nothing appears abnormal...It's quite funny (per usual) actually.  He did seem bewildered by the fact that player Brandon Wilds didn't want to play.  If true that he is retiring, perhaps the kids were becoming uppity and he just didn't feel like messing with them anymore?  Wath the video though for classic Spurrier.

Just a wild guess, but it probably went a little something like this...

USC AD:  Steve, you really need to think about retirement plans at the end of the season.

HBC:  Fuck you, you little sawed off prick.

USC AD:  Now, Steve...we have been talking to Petrino about...

HBC:  Suck my dick, I'm out of here!

Sounds like some HS, college or pro team could potentially get one hell of a play caller on their team. The HBC isn't done coaching if it's left up to him.

Bottom line is he hates recruiting and coddling the 5 stars.

From his press conference, it sounds like K was right. He pussed out and voluntarily stepped down midseason.

I dunno. But I prefer to believe what he said. And his age has evidently been used against him in recruiting. He said as much.

I'm thinking that he probably simply thinks it's better for the program to get somebody new. He said that. I don't see why he should or would lie about it.

Doing it now gives Tanner a better shot at getting a coach they want versus waiting until the carousel starts at season's end.

I would go with Coach O and find the best OC money can buy. And no, don't even say it.

Just saying that his past makes me lead with the qualifier until proven otherwise.

I imagine Spurrier knows what's best for him/the team far better than we do.  This isn't a Tiny Tot sequel. This looks to be a calculated decision.  Bowden tucked tail and ran.
