I used to play a lot of ball in my younger years. I know of these things.

But holy crap. Half way through the article, I got bored. Dude can definitely stretch out a yarn.

I have been umpin slow-pitch for near 20 years, done World Series in Florida and the Major's. These bats (and ball players) are just making me hate the game. Had an umpire about 4 years ago in Houston get killed by a line shot up the middle, never did find the bat. Had an umpire get pushed by a player a while back cause of a call. I remember when the games were tough but everybody ended up in the parking lot drinking beer, now there are fights and cops are called. I know  :getoff:

Half the players on church teams don't even know where the church is.

Hence the term OUTREACH!

I mean, you are talking about a bunch of fat middle aged dudes playing slowpitch softball to prove their manly Al Bundy-esque atheltic prowess from yesteryear....are you really surprised? The fighting and cussing just adds icing to how asinine it already is.

Worst fight I ever got in playing ball was a church league game.  Benches clearing brawl that spilled into the stands.

No arrests. But lots of cuts and bruises to multiple faces.  Multiple player ejections.  Several year long bans from playing.

And it was an old man -- over 40 -- who started the whole shebang.

There are still leagues like that, they are not the problem. You have an age group of folks starting to play now, I would say mid 20's to early 30's. They grew up getting trophies and such for just showing up, now they want to fight over freaking T-shirts. They pay $325.00 for a bat and then another $150.00 to get it doctored. I do just leagues now and almost every night I have to throw somebody out over the most asinine shit.

Last weekend from my understanding at D-State here in Garland, they had a lady come out of the stands and grabbed a bat on her way to getting on the field during an altercation between the players.  (Cops were called )

This is from an E-mail about one situation.

We work hard to field a competitive team season in, season out. Nowadays, I pray before each game that we do not get stuck with the ump that was behind home plate last night. Why? Because he hates our team and he has told me on more than one occasion that he doesn't like the way we play. He has told me he doesn't like having his calls questioned, and gets visually agitated when I ask him about a call.

I've never had an issue with any referee besides the crew from last night.

It is obvious that your ump  and ref from last night have it out for our team. They have a disdain for me and our players that makes it almost impossible to win. Their paid to referee a game fairly and honestly, not based on their personal feelings about a team or its players. A line has to be drawn.

In all my years of playing softball I have never had a Ref tell me to shut up and that he is kicking me out because I won't shut up about every call that is made. NEVER. I am owed an apology and so is my team.

I've never had a game tied 11-11, that will determine playoff seeding, and be kicked out because someone says "awww shucks" and the ref thinks he used profanity. Then I ask him what is he being kicked out for and the ref says I am gone to because I I won't shut up the entire game, and then game over. That is petty and senseless.

Every game we have played with the ump behind home plate that worked the game last night, we have never received a call in our favor. I have every call written down the past 4 games he's officiated for us and it is absolutely sick. This is discrimination at it's finest and I intend to sue him and the league.

I get that the ref does not like me cheering loudly for my team, he made it abundantly clear when he ended the game by saying "You never shut up about anything". Well, cheering your team on and being disappointed about a call you feel was wrong are parts of the game that are not worthy of being disqualified for.

I have copied my attorney on this and intend to file suit against the City of Richardson, the discriminatory referees, and the league.

I need to know what address you can accept service and I need to know the referees names from last night.

Thank you,

I get it that people lose their shit.  Once when I was coaching a women's team we were playing in a tournament and the other team's catcher decided to block the plate.  I had this big bull of a woman (playing in high heels believe it or not) coming from third and she put a shoulder down and knocked the tiny little catcher into the backstop.  The catcher was standing in the baseline and didn't have the ball.

Ump called my bull out even though the ball wasn't even in the infield and threw her of the game. Went and helped the catcher up, dusted her off, made sure she was okay.   So I was a little pissed.  The next batter lines one up the middle, the catcher this time stands a little off the plate, but when my girl heads home she leans in.  Shoulder to shoulder collision, catcher sprawls again.  Another out, another ejection.

So I went all Earl Weaver.  I was chewing tobacco at the time.  Flipped my hat around backward and went nose to nose. I'm sure he got a face full of spray.  Spit at his feet. Kicked dirt all over his shoes.  Full blown raging tantrum.  (Keep in mind I was 21 and had a massive crush on the second chick he threw out.  My little second baseman, so cute, so married... ).  So he threw me out too. Told me to get out of there.   I wasn't done.  Tore up third base and flung it at the pitcher's mound.  Tossed a few things out of the dugout. Went to the stands and led a chorus of hell directed at the guy.

So he ordered me out of the park.  I climbed the fence in the outfield and heckled him.  Not kindly, either.  Security (off duty cops) put me in my car and told me to stay there.  I blew the horn once, but the look I got from them made me think twice about continuing the tirade.

But I didn't threaten to sue him because he hated us.

Other side of that situation.  Probably ten years or more later I got conned into umping a Dixie baseball tournament one weekend and a mens softball tournament the next.  The parents were absolute ogres.  Arguing every single ball and strike I called on Jimmy, Joe and Ronnie.  Bitch, bitch, bitch, bitch.  I hate to say it but I started purposely fucking with their kids for sport.  Bitch at me and that borderline pitch is STRIIIIIIIKE Three!  I was an asshole.

Figured the men's tournament would be better.  Grownups at least.  Worse.  Started at 6 am.  We were short on umps so I was doing behind the plate one game and turning around and doing second base the next.  No off games. Just a water and maybe a gulped down burger in the 15 minutes between games.  By 11:30 that night I no longer gave a shit.  I argued with everybody, had my life threatened over balls and strikes and wasn't sure I was going to make it to my car without a marauding band of roid ragers carrying bats to beat me down.

No more umpiring.  Ever.

This situation has really blown up, Athletic director for the city has coward to him and not suspended him like he was suppose to for his two games and let him back in for the payoffs.

About 6 of us have resigned. I was suppose to call that field Wednesday night for the city tournament with another ump that has quit. We are just not going to show up.
