Longhorn fans won't have to stay on their couch to enjoy a cold beer with their football in the fall. The University of Texas at Austin will sell beer and wine at games starting with the next season, the school announced Wednesday.
It's a move that officials at the flagship have sought for years, but one that was blocked by the UT System in the past. UT Chancellor Bill McRaven, who was hired earlier this year and had yet to weigh in on the issue, gave the OK this week.
Dozens of schools, including West Virginia and Kansas State, have started selling beer at games, in some cases citing binge drinking at pre-game tailgates as a reason. The Austin flagship became the fourth UT System school — after The University of Texas at El Paso, The University of Texas at San Antonio and The University of Texas at Arlington – to serve adult beverages at sports events. Other in-state institutions offering similar service are the University of North Texas, SMU and the University of Houston.
The UT System has blocked the idea in the past. Former Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa said it needed more review. But like the flagship, the system has new leadership.
UT's new president, Gregory Fenves, said on his first day on the job that he wanted to sell alcohol at games. He said UT already provides football fans a world-class experience.

They are a few years behind on this. You seen the Longhorns lately? I'd need 6-12 just to sit through that epic fail of a football team.

2008 and 2012 in Jordan-Hare could have broke sales records in the state of Alabama.

No shit, he was 2008.

No shoot, he was 2008.
It all sucked. That was the point. Loefler was as bad a playcaller as Mike Shula. Franklin didn't have anyone on his side. Loefler's whole crew was just wrong.
