Quick answer, yes.

I've heard all sorts of theories as to why they really shut it down.  I have no clue and honestly, don't give a rat's patooty if they field a team or not. I can't believe a program like that can stay alive in this day and age anyway.  They have averaged less than 4 wins a season over the last 10 years.  Only 7 times in the history of the program have they drawn over 30,000 for a home game.  Is there any way in hell they can be self sustaining?  I can't see it.

I disagree. The UA BOT has done everything in their power to keep UAB from being successful. Given the right resources, they can compete. Invest in a stadium to where the fans don't put their lives at risk to watch a game and the support will be there. This past season, they were near the top of CUSA in attendance. Granted, they'll never approach 80K in the stands, but I am convinced a 40-50K seat stadium located downtown - rather in little Mogadishu - will bring more asses into the seats.

Agree with the caviat that it should be a 20-30K stadium somewhere on the southside.

Alls I'm sayin is, if just 20% of the bellyachers had been to a single fucking game for the last 10 years, none of this would be happening anyway.

Given the shitty end of the stick they've been forced to deal with since the program's inception, I think it's safe to say they have done as well as could be expected under the circumstances. Neil Calloway? Garrick McGee? Come on, man. They wouldn't be capable of winning with Auburn or Alabama's roster. UAB finally got a coach who could get something going and the BOT pulls their stunt - all because little bear wanted to "do it fer mah daddy". Fuck him.

UAB is no threat whatsoever to either bama or Auburn - no different than Troy, JSU, Troy, or UNA. Their only enemies are their own university system and the Bryant family.

Why not give them a sporting chance to succeed? They might actually do it.

I hope they do.  I like UAB.  I love watching their basketball team.  While I agree their stadium is trash, go to the damn games.  I attended a shit ton of shitty football games in Tuscaloosa in my time.  I watched Shula struggled to put 3 fucking points on the board against Lou Holtz.  Watched every damn minute of it, then fought traffic for 4 hours on the way home.

Those assholes in the streets bitching about not having football needs to start buying tickets and giving the team support when they are playing.

Hopefully, something comes along to get them moved out of the warzone of Ensley. Putting a small stadium closer to campus down on the southside makes sense. Get them out of thw ghetto and chances are good tgey can become self-sufficient. The UA stance has been centered on the lost revenue associated with the program (proven to be a falsehood). Partner with the city and local business who have rogered up to support them to build a stadium.

With all the empty lots from abandoned buildings and the upgrades the city has done so far to downtown, you'd think this would be on the agenda.

Not yet. The BOT "donated" all the stuff UAB had to Hoover. Gotta keep that pipeline open, cuz!

The student bookstore on campus did receive a shipment of t-shirts proclaiming their return, so they have that going for them.

So the UAB players will receive hostile fire pay as part of their full cost scholarship now?

UAB's defense will pick off passes and the people who live around the stadium will pick off the fans.

You answered your own question.

FSU was once thought of the same way in Florida.

FSU self imposed a non existant program for most of its history by being an all girl's school....and then not giving a shit as a whole until Bobby Bowden DID give one.
