Outside of taking an ass whipping from Nathan Forrest what is his significance?

I want to like him for that but I just can't.
Plus who knows what may have happened if he did not burn it down? It may not have become the cesspool that it is today.

You can't trust a damned yankee to do anything right. Hell, he left 3 buildings standing.
When news of Croxton's action reached General Forrest's headquarters, the conversation went something like this:
Messenger: "General Forrest, the yankees have set another fire!"
Gen. Forrest: "Where?"
Messenger: "Tuscaloosa, General. They set fire to the university of alabama!"
Gen. Forrest's CoS: "Sir, shall I dispatch a squad to engage these yankees?"
Gen. Forrest: "Hmmm ....."
Messenger: "General, shall I return to Alabama with news that help is on its way?"
Gen. Forrest: "Hmmm ....... hmmm ....."
