As he has been the most outspoken so far in terms of modernizing Saudi Arabia, will relations be good or bad with the new king?
I am not a huge fan of SA, but so far it has been the devil you know. And Abdullah never really seemed to be a fanatic. But yet SA has the biggest say in what OPEC does and they have not been kind to the US(or the world) in that regard for some time now.

They and Kuwait are the lesser of the evils over there. They are at least an ally culturally. And this King was no fan of radical Islam. At first glance this looks like a loss for the US, depending on who replaces him and their views.

We were distracted over fifty years ago by Communism/ arms race when we might have taken a different approach in the Middle East.

Those commies were also fighting some of these same people in the Middle East thus defacto making the Middle East folks our allies - at the time. Hindsight is 20/20.
