Stealing Signals Could Doom Auburn Football’s Playoff Chances

Auburn Tigers vs. Kansas State Wildcats Signal Stealing
Scott Sewell-USA TODAY Sports
Technically, it’s not against the rules to steal signals. But if you have been accused twice in the past year, it could turn into an ugly nightmare for your team.
At halftime during their game against the Auburn Tigers, Kansas State Wildcats head coach Bill Snyder said to ESPN reporter Samantha Ponder that Auburn was stealing their signals and that they would have to change them up. Auburn won the sloppy game 20-14. Even though it’s not against the rules to steal signals, it’s considered a low blow in the college football world and could weigh in as a disadvantage when it comes time to decide which teams are going to the playoffs.
This isn’t the first time Auburn has been accused of stealing signals. During the BCS Championship game last year, Florida State Seminoles head coach Jimbo Fisher accused the Tigers of stealing their signals. The Seminoles claimed they had to make adjustments to their signals throughout the game. Florida State won 34-31 and became national champions.
Auburn head coach Gus Malzhan awkwardly rebuked Snyder’s claims to signal stealing by saying a combination of “nos†and “nahsâ€. He didn’t elaborate on the issue, indicating that he wanted to change the subject fast. Instead of sticking up for his players, he dismissed the issue quickly, leading many to believe that he was indeed aware of the signal stealing, and did nothing about it. Even though it’s up to Kansas State to make sure that their signals are covert, they shouldn’t have to worry about another team blatantly stealing them. It’s more of an ethics issue.
Ultimately, if Auburn is considered for the playoff games, the signal stealing will go against them. The Playoff Committee will take note of the Tigers’ sneaky tactics, and if they are in close competition with another team for a spot in the playoffs they could be ousted based on the negative press from allegations of stealing signals twice.
Auburn needs to think again if they are considering taking any more signals while playing other teams.

"Auburn Playing Fast"
Although not technically illegal, Lord Saybinz has said at some point in the past that it was unsafe and if Auburn plays Auburn fast in any more games it could hurt their playoff chances if in a close race with other teams.
They might as well say this.

So let me get this straight...
On defense, you shouldn't scout a team to know what they are going to do on offense and avoid picking up on any tendencies of a QB checking off on the run or pass? You shouldn't force a team into a play call that you want them to make based on your alignment or coverage look. And no one should try to disguise their defense to get an offense to run one play, while you switch post snap to a different coverage.
On offense, you should never check off based on how a defense is aligned, because the offense is "stealing" a defenses strategy pre-snap.
This is stupid. For all we know, this is what Snyder meant...that Auburn had done a good job of scouting and knowing what the offense would check off to based on certain looks. They needed to change those. And the accusation last year was what a camera recorded from a kid coming off the field that was frustrated. It could be the same as a kid saying "The fucking refs won't call holding and he clearly saw it". Nothing more was said to my knowledge.
This whole thing is retarded...
-
The argument that "no" or "nah" isn't an acceptable response to a baseless accusation is almost as dumb as the idea that a defense should studiously avoid noticing obvious calls.
-
As for the BCS game, I have no idea if AU was stealing signals or not. It looked to me that (And most analysts said as well) that it was a simple matter in the first half of them having Winston take 5 step drops or hold it longer to try and go down field. Our D line was getting off the ball and getting to Captain Crablegs. In the 2nd half, they used quicker drops, shorter throws and had success. Meaning they made adjustments. As for the signals, you had over a month to prepare for one game. One game in which you knew full well a former coach would be standing across from you on the Auburn sideline and in a game for all the marbles. And you didn't think it would be a good idea to switch things up?

How can anything spell "doom" if it can't be proven.
Winning spells doom for the losers.
Win the conference championship and nobody gives a shit if you're "sneaky."

That might be the stupidest story I have ever read and I have read a lot of stupid.

I think that is exactly what Snyder meant. The media (of course) has taken what he said and ran with it. I can't believe this is even a story...still.

Alleged signal stealing isn't why you missed 3 FG and dropped a TD, K-State. Fuck off.

The guy that wrote this article is hard up for a story or has a hard on for Auburn. That's a stupid ass idea. I would hope that the people on the committee will know that virtually every team in football will use a signal the other team uses IF they figure it out.
It's not like we bugged their locker room.
Idiot.
-
It's like they're saying Auburn = Saints

I'm getting tired of you referencing my tits in such a distasteful manner.

I revisited EMAW (sp, wtf) and a few there expressed disappointment at the realization that they could no longer be among the four...as if it were a real possibility.

In a day and age where the Power 5 is getting more autonomy, is there any reason why teams can't use the speakers in helmets like the NFL does? That would really eliminate this "they stole our signals" bullshit. I mean, if you regulate it like the NFL does, what's the argument against it?
-
I would like to know when "stealing signals" became some unwritten rule that says it is a no-no? Most coaches I know would never waste time trying to purposely steal signals, but every coach will take advantage of figuring out the oppositions signals, usually due to predictable play-calling. If they didn't, then they would not be doing their job. Snyder's and Fisher's accusations are very hypocritical, knowing full well that as long as they have been coaching, they have done the same thing.

Dang, you act like there's a ton of revenue in college football. Those things cost money and these teams are working off very tight budgets.

I believe that it's part of the game. I mean, yeah, the runner on second isn't supposed to signal to the batter when he's getting a fastball but it's up to the catcher to cover his sign too.
It's a bullshit argument to use the "they were stealing our signals" argument. Wasn't it the 2010 Iron Bowl when it was pretty evident that Bama had our stuff? You heard bits and pieces but look at the 1st half vs 2nd half, after Gus changed stuff up. I don't blame Saban or Bama. It was up to Gus to make sure they didn't know what play we were running.
If they had sent a spy or tapped our headsets, that's different.
-
A bunch of crybaby bitches. I see a Fisher/Snyder meme coming soon.

I've thought the same thing. Would this be against some bullshit NCAA rule? Its not like the Power 5 gives too shits about the NCAA anyway. Hell, your boys in Ttown be having the hook-up on suites and chargers. We just place suitcases full of money in undisclosed places.

Yeah, ever since Colonial Bank went under...

Just like the runner at 2nd base "unwritten rule", I don't know anybody that goes by it at the high school level I coach. We see it all the time. That is why we have a different way of calling pitches when somebody is on 2nd base. Just like if we figure out the opposition coach's pitching signs to the catcher, you bet we are going to come up with a verbal signal to tip off our batters. Don't want that to happen? Then make sure your signs are good enough to not be so easily figured out. Unlike my volunteer coaching days, I have learned that when you are paid to coach and your job depends on winning, I will look for and take any "within the rules" advantage that I can.
-
File a protest or shut it.
We have protocol mister.
Don't make me explain this again.
-
What's so stupid is that Auburn, K State and Samantha Ponder have all come out and said the quote was taken out of context - that he never said those exact words. And if you go back and listen, it is true that he never did.
-
Good to see Thamel went ahead and got his annual hit piece out of the way by doing a sound follow up. http://www.si.com/college-football/2014/09/29/auburn-stealing-signals-michigan-brady-hoke-devonte-fields (http://www.si.com/college-football/2014/09/29/auburn-stealing-signals-michigan-brady-hoke-devonte-fields)
However the main reason for the bump is I just wanted to give a shout out to whoever it is we pay to steal signals. He obviously put some work in this week and might as well had a copy of LSU's playsheet. Though I doubt deciphering Miles signals was all that hard, still gotta give the man credit for being so thorough. I also would like to apologize to Brandon Jacobs for ever mentioning Derek Henry's slow and stiff fat ass in the same sentenc in another thread. Even though I called him a poor mans version, it was obviously a major insult to Brandon. Sorry bro.
-
Since this is probably the only thread that would be pertinent -
Dan Mullins was on Finebaum today and said that he gave Pete Thamel full access to the Miss State program during CamGate because he and Pete "go way back." There aren't very many people that I despise as much as Harvey Updyke, but I think the tag team duo of Thamel and Evans matches him.

Quite honestly I may hate those two douchebags more. Updyke is a crack pot with no voice, these two idiots are national syndicated somehow.

I would love to have one shot at them in a dark alleyway. That would be the one and only time in life I would wear all bammer gear and call myself Harvey Updike. Killing three birds with one stone.
