Title: Citizenship Test
Post by: Kaos on July 03, 2014, 02:44:36 PM
There's one at the end of this article.  I was shocked at how easy it was.

http://www.al.com/news/mobile/index.ssf/2014/07/are_you_smart_enough_to_pass_a.html#incart_m-rpt-2 (http://www.al.com/news/mobile/index.ssf/2014/07/are_you_smart_enough_to_pass_a.html#incart_m-rpt-2)

Only missed one and I'm not sure I missed it because the answer doesn't seem right.  But still.  96%.

This is very basic info.

Was it the one about who a Senator represents?

No.  The one about the cabinet members.  I wasn't sure one of them actually had the title "Secretary"  I thought it was Director.

looks like Sani won't beat your 96% score - "War of Northern Aggression" is not an available choice

Just checking, but you know Lincoln was a Republican, and after the war, Lee was a Democrat, right?

Yes and you also realize that the parties were flipped at that point?

Plus I give less than two shits what party that fucking war criminal was a part of.

My great grandfather flew a fighter jet in the civil war. He was the only Rebel black pilot in the whole country.

Did he train in Tuskegee?

No. He was in the Beauregard Airmen. A lesser known group that predated the Tuskegee group but he was the only one that survived the training.

To pass the test, he had to fly from Beauregard to Demopolis and back.

I have an old letter that he wrote to my great, great grandmother when he arrived in Demopolis in which he said, "My arms are really tired."

You need to preserve that kind of history!
Wonder when Antiques Road Show will be coming to town?

I got a 100%.

That can't be the real test.  That was way too easy.

You guys realize there is a lot more required to become a US citizen than passing this test, right?

Yes, it's astoundingly easy. This is designed to be absolute basic stuff that one must know about this country in order to live here. Let alone, you grew up in an American education system where this stuff is taught very young and keep up with news where it's still relevant today. You'd probably have a bit more difficult of time answering equivalents to these questions for some other foreign nation. But I digress.

You don't even get to take this test until you've been one of 12.5 million a year who apply for an immigration visa (if you're a resident of one of the select eligible countries), been selected as one of the 55,000 a year (less than 0.01% of those who apply) to get picked, spent about 7 grand on an immigration lawyer to guide you through the process, fill out the proper forms, then work consistently without switching jobs for a vague amount of time that is at minimum 5 years but can last decades, unless you marry in, which takes more like three years.

That's all to get your green card. THEN you can start applying for citizenship.

I'm not saying everyone who wants to live here should be able to live here. But the immigration situation is one big cluster fuck as it is and is in desperate need of reform. The answer is not to throw your hands up and say "Well, whatcha gonna do, it's impossible to get here the right way, so might as well have complete anarchy and enforce no border laws." But it's not to leave it the way it is either.

All that to say, this test is easy because it's supposed to be. Passing it is not even 1% of 1% of the difficulty of becoming a citizen.

Why have the test at all?  Give me 20 similar questions for other countries and years to study for it, hell hours to study for it, I'd ace it too.  Seems like a waste of time.

I think it's a waste of time to gauge their history interests anyway.  Do they want to become a citizen?  Ok, pay some money, prove that they're here to work, and document their information.

Right. IF you studied for it diligently, thus proving your level of dedication to becoming a citizen by learning that country's civic "common knowledge". If anything it's one very thin layer of many many much thicker ones to ensure that you're willing to assimilate at least enough to know things that every citizen of this country should know.
