Vegas likes Auburn to put a pounding on the Razorbacks.
Kickoff for the season opener between Auburn and Arkansas is still more than four months away, but Vegas has set an opening line for Week 1, plus an over/under for wins in 2014. Oddsmakers at 5Dimes have the Tigers as 21.5-point favorites over the Hogs, and their over/under for wins is set at 9.5.
A bet for either the over or under comes with -120 odds.
We had and idea that Auburn would likely open as a pretty large favorite over Arkansas, but three touchdowns is quite a spread. Then again, it's probably warranted. Last year, the Tigers led the SEC by averaging 38.4 points against conference opponents. The Razorbacks, on the other hand, ranked 13th with just 16.9 points per conference game. Auburn was in the middle of the pack on defense, allowing SEC teams to score 29.6 points per contest, but Arkansas was dead last, giving up 37.9.
In their head-to-head meeting at Fayetteville, Auburn played its sloppiest games in the second half of the season, but still won by 18, 35-17. Take into account how good the Tigers looked on A-Day, and it's easy to see why 5Dimes is heavily siding with Gus Malzahn's team.
While the though of BERT hearing the opening line for the first game of the year brings a chuckle, the over/under for wins isn't as rosy. After a 12-2 SEC championship campaign, a 9-3 regular season, even in the tough-as-nails SEC West, would be disappointing. Especially since the offense, well, should be fairly unstoppable.
