Auburn commit Smith arrested on drug charges
A former Auburn football signee and current commit to the Tigers’ 2015 recruiting class was arrested Sunday.
Jason Smith, who signed with Auburn in 2013 but failed to qualify and currently plays at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, was arrested in Mobile County for second-degree possession of marijuana and two counts of attempting to elude the police, according to the Mobile County Sheriff’s website.
Calls to the Mobile County Sheriff and to MGCCC coach Chad Huff were not immediately returned.
Smith, a four-star junior college prospect, signed with Auburn in 2013 but failed to qualify and enrolled at MGCCC, the same program where 2014 Auburn signees D’haquille Williams and Derrick Moncrief starred and where fellow 2015 commit Tony Bridges plays.
A former dual-threat quarterback at McGill-Toolen, Smith was the MVP of the 2012 Alabama-Mississippi All-Star game while playing receiver, with six catches for 134 yards. He was 110-for-169 for 1,566 yards and 19 touchdowns and ran for 849 yards and 16 scores as a senior.
“Looking for great things out of Jason, think he’s a great young man, like the likes of Tony Bridges,†Huff said in February. “I can’t say enough about their character.â€
Before failing to quality, Smith was expected to be part of last year’s quarterback competition. He is one of five commits to Auburn’s 2015 recruiting class, currently ranked No. 23 by 247Sports and No. 28 by Rivals.
Smith becomes the third player connected to the Auburn program arrested on drug charges during Gus Malzahn’s coaching tenure.
Cornerback signee Kalvaraz Bessent was one of four young men arrested in Nassau County, Fla., on drug-related charges just days after signing with the Tigers in February. All charges against Bessent were later dropped, and Malzahn has said he will join the program on “probationary status.â€
Former safety Demetruce McNeal was dismissed from the team following his arrest in August and has since entered a pre-trial diversion program.
