Harold Ramis, Filmmaker and ‘Ghostbusters’ Star, Dead at 69

    Christopher John Farley

Harold Ramis, who appeared in such movies as “Ghostbusters,” “Caddyshack,” and “Groundhog Day,” has died. The actor, director and writer was 69 years old.

His lawyer, Fred D. Toczek, confirmed the news to Speakeasy this morning.

Chris Day at United Talent Agency said in an email that Ramis passed away this morning at his Chicago home.

His family said in a statement that the filmmaker died “from complications related to auto-immune inflammatory vasculitis, a condition Ramis battled for the past four years.”

Ramis was born in Chicago, graduated from Washington University in St. Louis, MO., and launched his comedy career in 1969 as part of Chicago’s Second City improvisational troupe.

Ramis appeared in such movies as “Stripes” (1981), “Ghostbusters” (1984), “Groundhog Day” (1993) and other popular comedies. He also co-wrote “Animal House” (1978),  “Caddyshack” (1980) and “Stripes” and directed “Caddyshack,” “Groundhog Day,” “National Lampoon’s Vacation” (1983) and “Analyze This” (1999).

Ramis’s movies helped establish the genre of event comedy films in the late 1970s and and 1980s. “Ghostbusters” blended epic special effects and broad humor to score a major box office hit; “Caddyshack,” “Stripes” and “Groundhog Day” turned “Saturday Night Live” cast member Bill Murray into a respected actor and movie star. “Groundhog Day” was also a critical favorite, regularly turning up on critics lists as one of Hollywood’s best comedies.

Ramis is survived by his wife Erica, his sons Julian and Daniel, daughter Violet and two grandchildren.

How many of these are on my all time favorites list?

ALL OF THEM.

Very sad.

It is a sad day.  He was awesome.  My favorite movie growing up was Ghostbusters.

Curiously enough I met Ernie Hudson last week. Ghostbusters and Oz. Nice guy. Shaken the hand of a man who shook the hand of Murray and Ramis. Feel connected now.

Ramis was a big part of my psychological development.  I wanted to be John Winger or Ty Webb or Otter or Clark Griswold.  Sadly enough there are pieces of all those characters in my personality makeup.

As long as there aren't pieces in your KISS make-up, cause we'd hate for that to get all clumpy

Obama on Ramis's passing:
Quote
Michelle and I were saddened to hear of the passing of Harold Ramis, one of America’s greatest satirists, and like so many other comedic geniuses, a proud product of Chicago’s Second City.  When we watched his movies – from “Animal House” and “Caddyshack” to “Ghostbusters” and “Groundhog Day” – we didn’t just laugh until it hurt.  We questioned authority.  We identified with the outsider.  We rooted for the underdog.  And through it all, we never lost our faith in happy endings.  Our thoughts and prayers are with Harold’s wife, Erica, his children and grandchildren, and all those who loved him, who quote his work with abandon, and who hope that he received total consciousness.

X-like subtle movie quote.
