According to Pollack, our offense works because we're cheating.
When asked to use his defensive expertise to discuss how to stop Auburn's offense, he got flustered and commented that it's impossible because Auburn's cheating.
His exact words were "It's cheating. It is what it is."
It did seem more like he was unsure how to say it was impossible but ended up being a little bitch about it.

I don't understand how its cheating. Was the forward pass considered cheating?
-
Pollack: "If the line looks like it's going to run block and they throw a pass, that's cheating. That's what it is. That turns all your defensive training against you. You can't use your eyes, your instincts betray you. It's not fair."
Similar to the argument made to me by a Bama fan who bitched about the "high school offense" even after we'd beaten them.
"If ya'll would run a REAL offense, people would be prepared for it and it could be stopped easily. But ya'll run that high school junk and real football teams can't waste all year preparing for that trick play stuff so you sneak up on people."
In other words, if we'd just stop executing our offense and start doing things they were ready for, they'd beat us. Okay.

And while you're at it, if you'd just stop turning us in when we cheat then we can get our 198th championship.

bammer boards all agreeing with him. Couple of gumps saying it is high schoolish.

I wonder if they would say the same if they were capable of running the same O and were playing in the MNC. Thing is, we beat them with our "high school" coach and offense.

Unusual for pollack to say something that dumb. I still like him. Maybe he meant something else or whatever but it was still dumb how it came out. Maybe it was some of that ths extreme hyperbole.
He is usually the only one on ESPN making sense.

I agree with this.
I suspect it was a poor choice of words. I suspect he meant something along the lines of it being an advantage for Auburn.
He's one of the few on the Mason for Heisman bandwagon, and he's also one of the few who thought Auburn earned their right into the title game before Ohio State shat the bed.

Funny stuff. That said, I can tell you this about the OL down field. I expect it (now that Auburn has carried it to this level) to be addressed in the off season rules discussions. I've heard Gus (and several other HUNH coaches) talk about this. It's the new "option" wrinkle. They call 2 plays. One a run, one a pass. The line blocks the run. The QB can either read it, or the coach can signal it and they can run the run play, or throw the pass. The logic being (and it's true...for now) the refs virtually NEVER call OL down field except on busted plays involving a scrambling QB. IOW, the coaches have decided to take advantage of the non call (as opposed to any rule). The notion put forth that NM improvised on that play vs bammer is false. That was in fact a version of the triple option we are employing where one option is (instead of the pitch phase) a pass. Sometimes it's a screen, sometimes it's like you saw. Expect Sabbin to take this up with the SEC and NCAA regarding it being a point of emphasis to make these calls in the future. As of now...they don't.
The rest of the "gimmick" talk? Stupid. Gus run (about 75% or more of the time) 3 base run plays. IE same blocking. This year it's been inside zone...2 variations...and counter mostly, but we've also seen Power and Buck Sweep. I've heard him say they install 4 base run, and 6 base passes. The way they make such a simple (and what would be predictable) offense go is the pace, and the window dressing. Each week. Same base plays but new formations, and new motions and shifts, and new/slightly altered personnel sets. Much easier to install new formations and motions than "new plays". Gus perfects what they do best and keeps running it. On one drive against bammer he ran counter trey 3 times in a row. Age old counter trey (or counter GB "guard/back") and they couldn't stop it because of all the different motions and threat of sweeps they couldn't play their base technique to spill the play.
But yeah you're right. He's basically saying "quit executing such an offense at a high level and give everyone a chance to catch up".

Exactly...I did fix one small mistake though.

While this may technically be correct, I think the refs have always given a bit of a cushion to linemen who stay within a small range of the line. On the play in question, the linemen were not down field more than about 2.5 yds and one of them was running sideways. So on those plays that are run pass option, I think the lineman are told to only take a couple of steps up field to block. I definitely don't think the refs want to try and discern if a player is 1 or 2 yards up field on a pass. That would mean if a guy falls forward, he is up field.
It would also explain why many times Tre runs past the linemen and at the point of contact, the linemen are not still pushing their men down field.
I liken it to being an artist. And right now, the AU linemen are painting masterpieces!

Heard a talk show yesterday discussing this where the host made the comment, "I didn't know until this year that a lineman could be 3 yards down field according to the rules." So, I went googling a bit and found this. Now granted, it was from a Meatchicken board where they were talking about a call....but it looked real cool and legal and official the way he posted it.
ARTICLE 10. No originally ineligible receiver shall be or have been more than three yards beyond the neutral zone until a legal forward pass that crosses the neutral zone has been thrown (A.R. 7-3-10-I and II).

Most of us that played the game at a high level (4th string and above) and after the advent of the forward pass were aware of this.

Gus is ahead of the curve. One of the smartest football minds out there at this point in time. IF he can recruit what he needs, yall are set for a long while.
This may be yall's glory years. Bama had a Bear, yall may have a Grizzly.

Other than the part about the Linemen being told to not go up field on run pass options we are pretty much saying the same thing. The linemen only know to block the run play. As you observed the typically don't get down field anyway and if they do they're probably in that gray area that the refs won't call.
Our OL has turned dominant over the last 6 weeks.
