So understanding the national perception being that our paying of Conference foe rejects and JUCO mercenaries to come on board is the only reason Auburn ever sniffs success :taunt:... today, while catching the Auburn Football Review on a lazy Monday, I couldn't help but sigh during the clip where Gus asked NM to lead the locker room fight song and the poor kid didn't know the words. Anyone else catch this?
I think it's pretty clear NM didn't enroll in Cam Newton Public Relations 301, which was a large part of why Cam's one and done is such an afterthought in many minds, he elevated himself above it with charisma... I was reminded of this thought in another thread where it was mentioned NM knew Cam's "neighborhood". I am beyond grateful for what Nick's done for this team particularly with his limited time on campus but it's not just the on the field prowess where the differentiation occurs between 2010 and 2013 IMO.
Of course, if we lose the last 2 regular season games I will remain ecstatic over what 2013 has become. Those accomplishments are due in no small part to Marshall's decision to suit up for the orange and blue and I'm proud of him. Even if it wasn't his first choice.
Hell, after the abortion that was 2012, I should be grateful we simply had a qb on the roster much less one as talented and seemingly humble as Nick. So fuck the national perspective, just curious as to your own thoughts on the "hired gun" aspect of Auburn's success. Do you care? Is the perception even a thing this season?
I guess after 9-1 you have to dig pretty deep to find something to be bothered by... I'll take it. #winning

This is the first I have heard of the "hired gun". Pffffffffffffffffffffffffffft.

I've watched lots of those clips where players that I would consider all-in, recruited-from-high-school players didn't know the words. I think that's a fan problem. We have a stronger connection to the school and its traditions. The kids have a stronger connection to their position coaches and teammates.
That said, Gus shouldn't put anyone on the spot (read: ON CAMERA) unless he knows that the kid knows the words to the song.

If Nick doesn't know the words to the fight song or learn the creed by the Iron Bowl, I say we give him a pass. And next season too, btw.
Any mofo that can bust off 200 from QB, Imma let slide.

I believe in work, hard work.
Boy knows the Creed already.
Consider him slid.

Speaking of knowing the words, several years ago when my daughter was starting her very brief stint at Auburn, we went through Camp War Eagle with some friends of ours that didn't grow up "Auburn people". They weren't familiar with the traditions, cheers etc. One of the functions was for everyone to gather in JHS one night and the cheerleaders took everyone through the traditional Auburn cheers. After a few cheers, one of them looked at us and asked, "Do all Auburn cheers have cussing in them?"

War Damn Eagle
If anyone starts a WMFE movement (as in the RMFT trash) , I certainly hope it fails miserably.
I've been expecting to see some copycat shirts with this on them.

This is a stupid topic from outsiders who know nothing of what is going on. This is normal for a first year player. I remember my first fall with the team and all of the new guys had to stand up in front of the veterans and sing.
None of us knew what was going on. Corch dye stopped us, and looked at the veterans, nodded his head and the guys let it fly. Hell I had been at AU for almost a year and I didn't know the damn song. NM has only been there a few months and I'm sure his head has been busy learning other stuff. If he doesn't know the song by the time we play in the bowl game, then we can bitch.

The movement has already started in NC, at least by someone in Asheville

Better than the A&M cheers or whatever they call them.

Another thought on this that comes to mind is that all teams essentially have hired guns. Our neighbors to the west have more than one player that wanted to come to AU but circumstances (i.e. family members and/or situations) prevented them from signing with AU.
One (CK) even announced AU at his presser and his father immediately changed his decision and said that he was confused. So, I don't think it's a perception that is prevalent anywhere but Bammer and I do not care anyway.

Having no knowledge as to the impact your first year on campus had for the program, I can assume it wasn't quite to the level of Nick's. That just to say, as the national spotlight shifts toward Auburn and all the cameras begin to shine just a little brighter on its field general, things like that do stand out. I do feel like Nick has bought in to Auburn and will have every opportunity to solidify his own legend here at this pace.
I just figured maybe they could slip a GA from the music dept in for a couple quick lessons, maybe in place of passing drills now that we no longer need 'em.

Having no knowledge as to the impact your first year on campus had for the program,
LOL ZERO.
But it is common to jut not know these things as soon as you show up.
Hell half of your asses didn't know it when you first showed up.

If learning the fight song is a bigger priority than learning this offense, then we got bigger issues. Maybe we should take time out to line up our helmets too!
