Title: Thoughts - Week 8
Post by: Townhallsavoy on October 19, 2013, 10:02:54 PM
- We're back.  For everyone out there who has tried to discredit Auburn, tried to tear Auburn down, tried to ignore the positives of the Auburn program - to all of the, oh what the devil do the kids call it these days, "haterz," you can take your ballpoint pen and shove it straight up your ass.

- Malzahn should go down as one of the most brilliant offensive minds in the history of football.  EVERYWHERE he has gone, they have had an immediate turnaround not only to being a productive offense but a dominant offense.  A year ago, with one of the putrid offenses in Auburn history, we gained 335 yards.  One year later, we break the 600 yard mark as the visiting team.  He's done this everywhere he's gone.

- Give credit where credit is due - Manziel and that offense is unstoppable.  And that's why I'm going to praise our defensive play despite giving up so much in the game.  Mike Evans is unstoppable.  Manziel is the most dangerous, dynamic player in CFB history.  We came up big when we had to.

- So here we are.  We're in a different world now.  I hope our players are ready.  We're no longer sneaking out from under the rug.  We're no longer underestimated.  We are (especially if Ole Miss pulls off the upset) in control of our own destiny.

- Missouri has a two game lead in the East.  Wut.

- Today was fun.  One of the better weekends of college football I can remember.  Vandy upsets Georgia by coming back in the 4th quarter.  Florida loses to Missouri.  Tennessee knocks out South Carolina.  As of right now, it's 24-14 in Oxford with LSU at least squirming.  Auburn gets a huge victory over Texas A&M.  Good times!

- Oh wait, Alabama's up 45-0 in the 3rd quarter against Arkansas.  Fuck them.  Bunch of steroid, cheating freaks.

- 6-1, next week 7-1.  Should be a big favor against Arkansas to go 8-1.  Tough matchup against Tennessee to maybe go 9-1.

- I'm in awe.

Ole Miss still leading late in the game 24-17, watching that game and the Organ - Wazzoo game.
Go Cougars.

One thing to remember...Manziel needed only 67 rushing yards to break Cam's SEC single season rushing record for a QB (bammer Gary Danielson stated that it's fitting that he breaks it against Auburn). He had 70 yards rushing until Dee Ford planted him 22 yards behind the LOS. Manziel finished with 48 yards rushing on 18 carries.

I'm confused...he only has 438 yards on the year?  Cam ran over 1400 yards in 2010.

We do control our destiny but still have room for improvement.

Gus has made great strides with this team.  He also would have cost us the game if Johnny didn't get hurt.  I hope the season comes down to that Saturday after Turkey Day.  If things keep going how I think they will I can guarantee I won't be in the woods that Saturday like I have the last 2 years.

Oh yeah Fuck You Gene.

I'm glad we have room for improvement.  Our schedule sets up nicely to work on mistakes and get better.

I very much question the random "three straight strange pass plays" drives.  But, one thing I have to admit is that they do work in the long run.  They work somehow.  If they didn't work in a way, we wouldn't have 600+ yards of offense in a game against a top ten team.

I'm guessing it's career rushing...not really sure, but he was 67 yards away from breaking Cam's record and Gary stated it'll be ironic getting it against Auburn.

Well they are supposed to set up plays in advance but we seem to get anxious and knock ourselves out of rythym.  I had a mini-meltdown in the first half because of this and by the middle of the third I decided if we won it would be in spite of fucking away 11 points.

- Really unimpressed by Oregon.  Not because they aren't good.  They're a very good football team, but they are really good at exploiting inferior talent.  For example, a little bit ago, three Washington State players converged on an Oregon running back.  Should have been an easy tackle, but for some Pac 12 reason, the Washington State players whiffed.  The Oregon back split them and then went 60 yards for a touchdown.  I think Oregon would get stomped by a good SEC team like Alabama, Missouri, or Auburn.

Some fans are already selling "WE WANT BAMA" shirts.  In the waning minutes of games against Tennessee, Cal, And Colorado, you can hear them chanting "WE WANT BAMA".

Watch what you wish for.  Even if it isn't Alabama, but maybe it is another top SEC team.  In Alabama's case, they typically fuck you up when you taunt them.

- For all the griping we've done about our middle linebackers, Kris Frost was able to run down Johnny Manziel from behind and tackle him for a big stop.  That was a huge play.  One of the biggest in the game.  If he hadn't grabbed Manziel's jersey at that exact moment, he could have slipped away!

Random non-Auburn thoughts.

1) Watched Tennessee for a while the last couple of weeks.  They remind me of Auburn in 1981.  Long stretch of nothing, new coach reminds them of who they used to be. And they start to believe.  They've been dormant for a long time but for those who remember, UT can be a dangerous dragon when the right person is running that program. Jones may not be it, but he's a lot closer than Fulmer (at the end), Kiffin or Dooley.  Looking at Alabama's schedule, I think Tennessee and Auburn are the two best last chances to screw up their day.  LSU is a mess.

2) Les Miles was one cheesed off dude Saturday night.  He was literally snarling in the post-game statements. That program has some issues and Mettenplerger isn't who they try to make him out to be. AU should have beaten that team, but we were too busy beating ourselves at first to figure it out.

3) Arkansas. That's a bad team getting worse by the day. Fat Turd is getting a life lesson in SEC football.  That freshman running back is good, but he's getting beat to death as their only option.  I wonder if he now regrets going against his mother in that bizarre recruiting story where she stole his LOI and refused to fax it?  He'd be a star at Miami and make that team truly better.

4) Clemson. STFU. Of everything that happened yesterday I was happier about that than anything but Auburn's win.  S.T.F.U.   ESPN's opening about getting their eyes beat shut and having a can of whoop ass opened on them was awesome.

5) South Carolina.  Cracks in the Spurrier legend.  Coddling Clowney (who did play well) is going to disrupt that team's chemistry.  They are better than they've shown.  Won't get a chance to prove it.

6) Missouri.  Real deal or not?  I have no idea.  They do seem to have a solid defense to go along with a versatile offense so I guess you could say they are real.  They will lose at least one, maybe two SEC games before it's over.  If they play uat in the SEC-CG (and them getting there is assumed by pretty much everyone although they don't have a single quality win on their resume) the turds will punish the Zoos.

7) UGA. Excuses galore. This one is hurt, that one is tired, blah blah blah.  Every year excuses. Vandy may have finally run Richt out of the building.  Although the Dogs have dominated us lately I sort of like Richt where he is.  UGA is another of those dangerous dragons, but they're never going to take that last step while he's there.

8) FSU. Beat the pulp out of Clemson but I'm not sure -- based on Clemson's entire resume being based on beating UGA -- that those jackholes are any good anyway.  I think Clemson was a media creation and any time they play a decent opponent they get their @#$%* pushed in.  Hard. Will reserve judgment on FSU for a week or two.

9) Oregon. Want them to go down in an avalanche of fire and feathers.  Hate them.

10) Ole Miss. Still Ole Miss. Still suck.

Gus and staff have very much over-achieved with this group.  Finding a decent QB is a great help, but the entire team shows to be much improved.  The defense is as expected IMO, however, unlike the past few seasons, they don't look completely lost out there.  They play up to their ability, and use good technique for the most part.  The OL is improving.  The RBs are productive even running as a committee.  The WRs are ok, but IMO don't play as good as they look "on the hoof".

This season for AU?  Pretty well everything we needed to happen for a surprisingly great season has happened thus far.  It's a shitload more fun and interesting than I thought it would be.

The rest of the SEC?  Unpredictable and surprising.  Can't believe I'm saying it, but we actually have a chance to win the West.

Well put. There are several teams in the sec that aren't as good as many expected. Just so unpredictable. The conf is better top to bottom but not as top heavy as in previous years.

Deep Thoughts Week 8.

Haven't been on the board since last week so I have no clue if the BFTC results have been posted.  However, I am 100% certain I'm the horse's ass....and more than happy to be.  I had no thoughts of us winning this game going in. Just really wanted to be competitive.  I guess part of me still can't get over last year.  I know which week I'll be dropping.

I have never been so upset with an AU touchdown as I was when Mason stretched it over the goal line for what proved to be the winnah. When they reviewed and called it 6....the whole room went   Too much time for JFF.

I believe our defense is playing as well as it possibly can.  We give up, and will continue to give up an ass-load of yardage.  But those salty muthafucka's seem to find a way to do just enough.

To my total surprise, our O-line has been strapping on their big-boy pads and making people pay.  Tre Mason is one of the hardest running backs I've ever seen.

Laugh if you will, but this game shouldn't have been that close.  Whether it was execution or in my opinion, really questionable play calling, we basically took the 2nd and 3rd quarters off offensively.  I'm not going to start questioning a guy whose offense is racking up record numbers...but maybe just a little.  I kept asking in the Ole Miss game, "Why aren't we running the ball?"  They cannot stop us at all.  And like some said earlier, why did we go through a stretch against A&M where we decided to fling the ball around for no apparent reason?  In both games, they eventually settled back into pounding it and took control of the game.

As long as we can run the ball even close to the way we have so far, we have a legitimate shot in every game we play.

I agree...for a few reasons: lost offensive opportunities (dropped passes), freak WR talent in Evans/weak corner play from Mincy, unmitigated holding by A&M's OL.

I'm just going to trust in Gus.  He has forgotten much more about playcalling than I'll ever know, so I have to assume that he knows about the mid-game drop in production and is tolerating it on purpose.  It's enough of a trend now to have garnered his attention.

I have heard a lot of this sentiment and I just don't get it. Sure, it would have been nice to cross the goal line with 0:00 on the clock. But you have to score whenever you can. There is no guarantee that we would have scored on the next play, or the one after that. To be upset because we scored to early is just crazy talk.

Just heard an interview with Malzahn from earlier today.  He said there was a lot of talk on the headset after they gave them the touchdown that they were really wanting to run more clock off.  I agree that no one assume a score will happen.  Just too many things that could go wrong, including a penalty.  Part of me would just rather take a 1st and goal from the 2 than giving JFF the ball back with over almost a minute and a half.

Part of me would just rather take a 1st and goal from the 2 than giving JFF the ball back with over almost a minute and a half.

The only way I could agree with that is if I had a crystal ball and absolute certainty that a score would follow.

So many things could have happened from first and goal at the 2.

1) Holding penalty, back to the 12.
2) False start (illegal shift, substitution penalty, etc.), back to the 7
3) Fumble
4) Goal line stand (HAHAHAHAHA... ok, not that one)
5) Interception
6) Missed field goal after 1 or 2

Would have been nice to score with less than 30 seconds left, but take the points.

What I don't understand is that even Ace and Gary knew what was going to come on the ensuing drive.  "He's going to open the drive by throwing to 13."   And does. For almost 20 yards.

And does again for 20 more.

The first throw was slightly contested.  The second to 13?  Nobody within 10 yards of that guy.

I guess the question I ask myself is if I'm coach, do I ever encourage a guy to drop on the goal line and run clock? I think against JF in this situation, the answer was yes but just like making your penis longer, it's easier said than done. (Note: "your" was used because mine is long)

Oh I wouldn't take the points off the board and the list K put up are all possibilities.  When that play was run, Auburn just looked unstoppable, like they could walk in anytime they wanted.  And I believe they could.  At first glance, it was 1st and goal and I actually relaxed and thought for the first time, "We got this.  Can't believe we just beat A&M in College Station".  Then they reviewed it and gave to JFF with a minute twinny-something to go.  That was the real  moment.

At first, I was like

Then, I was all like

But later, I was like :pb:
