Title: Thoughts - Week 7
Post by: Townhallsavoy on October 13, 2013, 10:00:35 AM
- CFB is about halfway done.  Makes me sad.

- There IS no quarterback controversy.  There shouldn't be.  Nick Marshall is our quarterback, and we don't have much reason to believe that Jeremy Johnson proved he was better on Saturday.  Western Carolina beat Mars Hill.  That's it.  They got their ass kicked by Samford.  They haven't beaten an FBS or FCS team in years.  They pretty are nothing but a group of players getting a free ride to college.

- I don't know why Gus chose to burn the kid's redshirt.  For those that think, "Well you just play the best 22 no matter what," that's not entirely true.  Redshirting a freshman is taken into consideration and has been by every college coach since redshirting became an option.  In my opinion, I believe that Nick Marshall's injury is more serious than reported and that he could miss the A&M game.  Now, against a top ten team and a conference matchup, you do play your best 22 especially if you have a chance at doing something special with this season.

- And that's exactly what it seems like is happening.  We have a real chance at doing something special this year.  Gus is on his way to being a serious COTY candidate. With Georgia's injury bug and the fact that we get them at home, we can beat them.  Arkansas is terrible and one dimensional.  Tennessee has looked god-awful at times.  We could eastily be 9-3...

- Or even 10-1 going into the Iron Bowl.  We still have glaring holes on our team.  The MLB situation isn't fixed yet.  We still give up long pass plays.  We have strange 3 and outs where the play calls seem random.  Our quarterback misses wide open receivers.  We may have to play a true freshman quarterback.

- But we matchup very well against A&M.  Our run game is ranked 7th.  Their run defense is in the 100s.  We can and will run on them and if we can keep Manziel off the field, we can win.  Georgia again is plagued by the injury bug.  Will be a much, much bigger feat to beat Georgia (IMO), but we get them at home.

- And hell, we somehow pull this off, we go into the Iron Bowl at 10-1 with a chance to be playing for....

- ...shouldn't get ahead of myself.  Still got blown out in the 1st half against LSU. Still have serious talent gaps.  Struggle with consistency.  Defensive line gets pushed around by power running teams.  Little depth.

- But damnit, I want to see magic.

- Missouri could have been a bigger story, but losing their quarterback ruined their season.

- LSU-Florida was a snoozefest.

- Watched the Alabama-Kentucky game until the A&M game started.  Of course, watched Bama play uninspired, shitty football.  Three fumbles?  Was that how many they had in the 1st quarter?  But Kentucky blows monkey balls and couldn't capitalize on anything.

- How many Texas fans were upset about the result yesterday?

I don't think Auburn has a talent gap as much as you believe. I think Chizik recruited well, just didnt have position coaches who develop talent. I think new defensive coach can, and I think that's turning into results on the field. Bend but not break defense is turning into a defense that can get a 3 and out. It's turning into a defense that is playing fast with confidence. And Malzhan can put points up. Does he get into lulls where he tries so hard to make his game plan work that he goes away from what's working because he wants a certain type of play? Maybe. But he'll get through that.

A&M is beatable. I knew their defense was bad.  I should have know just how bad when they allowed Bama to put up 49. But I saw just how bad last night. If Freeze wasn't such a dumbass coach, Ole Miss could have put the game away with a scoring drive to end the game.  Arkansas can only run, and I think Ellis will sellout to stop the run and succeed. Tennessee is terrible. Georgia isnt great. Hell, Bama still hasn't shown they can play a complete game.

Auburn is playing inspired. It would take some bounces to be 10-1 heading into Iron Bowl, but it could happen.

I think the game this Sat tells us what we are looking at down the road.

Agree with everything, except the part about redshirting is better than playing your best 22...You play your best 22 regardless. If a true freshman is the backup, which JJ is, then he'd better be ready.
