I am impatient. I am fucking tired of being this far behind LSU, Georgia, and Alabama.
2010 was an anomaly.
This sucks. Makes beating Miss State worth nothing knowing that we'll just get our ass beat by the important teams.
-
It sucks but I'm not upset. #6 team. In their house. No quit in this team. Not claiming any kind of moral victory, but this works for me.
Not to mention that deep deep in the 4th we still look fresh and have energy. Improvement in conditioning.
Did not expect miracles this season. I did expect improvement. I did expect competitiveness. And I have seen both.

Yep, last years team would have rolled over and died. This bunch didn't quit, yeah we had some fuck ups but overall there is improvement. I wish we would have won, but shit, I am proud of this bunch.

Not to try and sound like a ga fan, but take away that first quarter and its a totally different ball game. We came out, got punched in the mouth, recovered from it but not in time. We wore their asses out the last 2 quarters statistically. Lsu's d was visibly gassed.
Most importantly, we did not quit.
-
I'm also tired of being behind the pack but at the same time we all knew this year was not going to be a miracle year. The Chizik years set us back and we should be grateful for 2010 and Cam. If not for that year we would be on a 6 year run of misery.
That said after what I saw tonight I actually do have faith in CGM. The team did not quit and is playing without a lot of talent and undersized players at key positions. We get the recruits we need and things will change. This year will not be a complete disgrace we will win some games that we shouldn't and end up middle of the road. Personally I would like to see Jeremy Johnson in the rotation because he will be our future QB.
LSU will beat Bama.

I liked our effort in this game, but it was obvious that when LSU turned it on, when they needed to respond, we were greatly out manned. They gashed us for thirty yard chunks with ease.
I do not buy into the idea that if our punter didn't drop the ball that we would have playing until the last minute for OT. I think they would have scored on their possession anyway.
We have some really good players. We have some depth at a few positions. We have some young guys that have potential. But we still have a few positions lacking SEC talent.

I wish people would quit saying that. Last year we only lost 12-10.
Preface it by "the decimated team at the end of last season... "

I know this isn't the place for moral victories and sunshine but fuck it. Im gonna do it anyway. Imo there is not a team on schedule we can't compete with. Most of the mistakes I saw can be corrected and many were in the 2nd half. Clark's bobble was a fluke play that gave them a TD. When CEJ finally brought the safties down we started stuffing the run. Solid adjustments were made at the half however the hole was to big and the stakes were to many to overcome on the road. It is what is. A loss and hopefully a lesson learned. And that's you better bring your A game if your gonna beat the big boys. Especially at their place. Tonight we didn't. If we do who knows?

Dry day, we fight and make it very close. We are an inexperienced team that played in a deluge and made the mistakes that we just could not come back from. I like our chances form here on out...as long as it don't rain.

^Agree. LSU had a decided advantage and the immediate implosion was just too much to overcome but we fought hard and I'm proud for that.
*NM struggled with his mechanics and hope he can get it corrected for Ole Miss. I had to listen to the radio broadcast for the first half and Stan said Nick wasn't setting his feet or squaring his shoulders and continued to do so throughout.
-
I saw Chad Slade actually getting after the DLinemen, even mauling a few of them. I guess he didn't like me calling him a Coke Machine that just stands there in the hole.
-
When the home team has to get home cooking even when they are obviously the better team? I'm ok.
The call on the onsides kick was abysmal. That was our ball and who knows what happens if we get that.
The motion penalty after the fake injury was also bogus -- as was the fake injury to give their defense time to breathe when we were about to make it a one-score game.
Yeah, they bumbled away one score with the fake field goal, and fumbled away another but we handed them three scores by letting Jake play and by dropping the punt snap.
The only thing that worries me is that Ole Miss, Arkansas, anybody we play is going to run right at Jake and he's going to dance backwards or sideways every time. There has to be another option. All of their big back-breaking runs were partially his fault.
-

I think I have mentioned this being the case, but nobody seems to want to accept it. Now that you've seen it first hand maybe?
Jake Holland sucks. Any and every barb that's been thrown his way is on target and deserved. That said, last night, for most of the game when LSU needed yards, they ran right between the tackles from the I formation. Old fashioned, power football. Blackledge called it the first time they needed it ("they like to run to the left") and they did. They got huge chunks of yards, and TDs. That mammoth FB LSU had had nothing but clear sailing through the line of scrimmage to draw a bead on Jake, and he flattened him routinely. The FB could have run for 150 yard with no lead blocker. Why? Our DL parting like the red sea. We're woefully undermanned on D. Therezie is about the only thing like a player we have there. Our DBs are playing much better technique wise, but still get beat badly. In an effort to slow this down we crammed every gap on run downs, and still they gained positive yards.
I saw this in the spring, and accepted it. I said it here. Some refuse to believe it, while others think "coach em up" or "imaginative 3rd down play calling" will make it all better. It won't. When we step on the field vs bammer, and Ugay, we'll be just as outmanned.
Bright side? Wench said it. We see great improvement in the things coaching can fix: effort, technique, team culture, conditioning. Ark. and UT suck.
Ole Miss isn't that much more talented, if at all, but they're not that much more lacking in talent either (like they should be compared to Auburn) and they have a year jump on us with their new coach/systems, plus confidence. We might actually eek out 8 wins (9 with a bowl win) IF we don't have a game where we don't show up at all. But, with our D, Ole Miss could score early and often. Not sure we'll feel any better, and may feel worse after next Sat.
You don't have to claim a moral victory to see things to build on with this team. I think the future is bright for Gus and company, but the future isn't now.

Defensive lacking will keep us from beating the better teams in the West (Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Alabama) and East (Georgia) left on the schedule. Ole Miss and Texas A&M will use their speed and misdirection to get our D out of position and break big the opposite ways. Alabama and Georgia will line up and run it right at us - especially Georgia.
We should be able to outscore Arkansas and Tennessee and by the time we get to the latter, they may not have much fight left. We'll wax Western Carolina and FAU as should be expected.
That's 7-5 with a bowl bid coming. Not too bad but hopefully won't become the norm.
Outside of Auburn:
Southern Cal should go ahead and start the coaching search now. They are pathetic and shouldn't be. Ever.
Notre Dame and Michigan are totally propped up by ESPN. Those teams are aided by a weak conference (or not one in NDs case) and a weak schedule. There's nothing tough about either of them.
LSU will beat Georgia and Alabama this year. That's a nasty, big team with a chip on the shoulder. The biggest obstacle is Les and his awful game management. If they can overcome or work around that, they could run the table.
If the media could arrange it, the national title game would be Oregon - Ohio State. And the game would be awful. Ohio State would be little more than cannon fodder for the Ducks.
-
Also jumping off JR's post -
If we go 9-4, is it normal for a 9 win SEC team to be so ar behind the best SEC teams?
The SEC has been pretty lopsided lately. I agree we could squeak out nine wins or eight but it seems silly that a team like that would have little chance of NOT being blown out against Alabama, LSU etc.
Maybe I just didn't pay attention to the mid tier teams when we were rolling n the mid 2000s.

Oregon is a misfit and in a weird way I like it. To me Espn wants bammer - tosu.
Stanford, lsu, Oregon, even A&M all equally deserving if not more. I'd love for aggy to get in after losing to bammer. Would be the ultimate karma after what happened last year.
Louisville and tosu have no business in the conversation with their schedules.

add to this Gus made some stupid ass calls. He didn't help.
We should have been running the fast paced all damn night. Jake Holland has no business out on that field...period!
-
The aforementioned home cooking aside, the second half was much better than the first.
I was at the game. It was unbelievably fucking loud every time Auburn had the ball. In another sign of disrespect, the corn dogs were filing out at halftime. I think that had something to do with a better 2nd half performance. Also, the downpour in the first half didn't help. That had cleared up in the 2nd.
If we played that game in Auburn last night, I think we would have won.

At this point, it is laughable that Gus & Ellis are keeping him in there. I'm baffled by it.

When we muffed the punt early in the driving rain I immediately thought of the Ole Miss game (snap over head) and it was like a death knell. And while we all know our team has limitations we can hang around and outlast a team not ready to play us.
Marshall is ideal for this "current" offense and would be scary good if he exhibited some consistent form with his throws. But he gets away with a lot of it and in the heat of the battle he's going to do it his way. Watching clips of '09 and '10 reinforce that he is better suited than any we have because he is operating without that nasty offensive line that really got after it.
I don't care to see Prosch catch another ball... Grant or Artis Payne yes.
We go a tight set and defenses automatically load the box as Stan pointed out. Run game much better veiled with combos of split receivers. *It's not any knock on play calling, but rather the personnel groupings we get at times against agressive talent like LSU. Prosch is a good last option against teams we are likely to beat. But if we execute properly that option isn't required. Jus sayin'.
Rod pointed out several times that after a catch Louis should just go at the defender and try to shake him more north/south with his size advantage rather than bust a move.
It's not imperative that we go with the same vanilla starting lineup and setup with our defensive down linemen and 'backers to get the same old results. Why not get creative early on for a change.
Chris Davis will relieve some pressure at boundary corner.
The lack of stops by our LBs will keep our corners and safeties hobbled as witnessed by the defensive team (tackles) stat. But that starts by getting pushed around (or suckered) easily inside.
Beyond A&M, UGA and Bama we might hang tough with Ole Miss and manage to beat the others.

Baah, pfffttt, baah.
Converting third and short extends drives. Extended drives keep their offense off the field and increase the likelihood that ours end up in points or in more advantageous field position.
Outmanned or not, we have to convert third and two, third and one and not try to be adventurous on those calls. We had lined up and proven that nine times out of ten we could plow straight through the line for three yards. Do that.

No. Texas A&M is porous on defense but they have a great equalizer. Florida has a top notch defense and a bungling, wayward offense.

If LSU was in shape nobody beats them. And if they get behind a team that isn't soft in the middle they will have problems.

Ok...I'm all over that sentiment, IF we match up physically.
Auburn on 3rd down, from the play by play:
3rd and 1 at AUB 45 Cameron Artis-Payne rush for 5 yards to the 50 yard line for a 1ST down.
3rd and 7 at LSU 47 Nick Marshall rush for 6 yards to the LSU 41. (Was this a designed run, or a scramble?)
3rd and 9 at AUB 26 Nick Marshall pass incomplete.
3rd and 1 at AUB 34 Cameron Artis-Payne rush for no gain to the Aub 34. (Rushing on 3rd and short is a different animal than rushing on 1st and 10)
3rd and 2 at AUB 30 Nick Marshall pass incomplete to Brandon Fulse. (Don't specifically recall this play...what type of call was it? Safe pass that should have been completed? Bomb? We were down 14-0, and on our own 30)
3rd and 10 at LSU 47 Nick Marshall rush for 5 yards to the LSU 42. (We were in 4 down territory, and failed to convert the following down)
3rd and 4 at AUB 38 Nick Marshall pass incomplete to Marcus Davis. (down 21 to 0, on our on 38)
3rd and 3 at LSU 49 Tre Mason rush for no gain to the LSU 49. (Again, 3rd and short is different from 1st and 10)
3rd and 2 at LSU 42 Nick Marshall pass complete to Sammie Coates for 14 yards to the LSU 28 for a 1ST down. (Down 21 early 3rd Q)
3rd and 1 at LSU 19 Tre Mason rush for 17 yards to the LSU 2 for a 1ST down.
3rd and 5 at AUB 30 Nick Marshall pass incomplete. (Down 28-7 Mid 3rd Q, from our own 30)
3rd and 5 at AUB 32 Nick Marshall pass complete to Marcus Davis for 11 yards to the Aub 43 for a 1ST down.
3rd and Goal at LSU 2 Tre Mason rush for 2 yards for a TOUCHDOWN.
3rd and 9 at AUB 15 Nick Marshall rush for 5 yards to the Aub 20. (down 35-14 early 4th Q)
3rd and 12 at AUB 10 Nick Marshall pass complete to Marcus Davis for 10 yards to the Aub 20.
3rd and 1 at AUB 33 Tre Mason rush for 2 yards to the Aub 35 for a 1ST down.
3rd and Goal at LSU 17 Nick Marshall pass incomplete to Marcus Davis.
9 plays on 3rd and 4 or less. 6 Rushing attempts. 4 conversions. Taking in to account the score and game situation, I think Gus generally agrees with your sentiment while at the same time not wanting to be totally predictable, and takes calculated risks when needed.
We're outmanned vs LSU, bammer, and UGA. Gus, like any play caller is not flawless, but I don't think that's anywhere near the top of the lists of reasons we don't win that game last night. Not even in the top 10.

I think the other option is to bring the safties down and crowd the line. When CEJ started doing that in the 2nd half, Hill was held to 11 carries for 32 yards. I hope like hell thats the gameplan when we travel to Arky. Trust me as shitty as our MLBs can be, they are far more shitty when the FB and TB are sprinting through a 5 yard hole right at them. And though I thought the D-line played alot better in the 2nd half, imo, until they can start holding their gaps better we are gonna have to pressure more early in games.
-

This is true. It's just we know they won't approach Auburn the same way.

THIS! We don't match up physically against our SEC opponents. And I don't know why we open with a rope a dope strategy in the first half hoping we don't get gashed.

Seems like Jake's more of a "Fishin' In the Dark" kind of guy. At least his tackling is.

No! No! No! It's not Mr Bojangles that GH is referring to. It is Feed Jake, dammit. Some of you need to take Country Music 101 again if you have an R&B guy like me having to make country corrections.

Just logged on and didn't read any of your takes because first, it would take too long and second, mine is so much better. Simply put:
1. Malzahn out-thunk hisself. Stupid calls early on that quickly put momentum on their side. Punt the damn ball and make them go the distance.
B. Putting Kaleel at QB? Ever? Why? Anyone recall the Northwestern game just before half. Chris Todd is taking us down field for what would have been the score that basically put the game out of reach. Inexplicably, Kodi is inserted into the game to throw a fly pattern. Intercepted. Momentum swing. Game goes to the wire. Kaleel offers nothing over Marshall...nothing over Wallace. He's not as fast as either and has done nothing but make poor decisions since he arrived. Why?
3. The mystery of playing Holland continues to baffle the foosballz universe. They ran at him every damn play. He folded every damn play. Frost gets in and tracks down a guy, makes a great play but gets called for a bogus horse collar. Frost doesn't see the field for another quarter. Why?
M. Loved the fight in this team. Mason and Artimus-Pyle run damn hard. Our O-line had times where they whipped the shit out of LSU. A bunch of times. Jake's ineptness aside, this D played and has played hard til the end all season and by the end of the game, I guarantee LSU didn't want no mo.
3.2 (b.) Odell Beckham is bad ass. Sammie Coates stepped up big time.
-
Wondering if there is some thing wrong with Wallace. Unless he is dead, why the FUCK would you put KF in there? If I, with my tiny female brain, know what is going to happen...I imagine everyone else does too.
I am 100% certain we were going to score in that opening drive, that injury was a momentum killer. Then we got all fucked up...we recovered, but it was too late. And fuck Jeremy Hill.
-
And fuck Jeremy Hill.
He ain't interested unless you are 14.

At some point, the DL needs to take some responsibility for the lack of production at MLB. Even with Frost in, we still got gashed up the gut. Remember that big TD run by Hill, the one that everyone was screaming at Holland because he didn't make the play...he was the only one being double teamed (La'El Collins & JC Copeland). Mike Singletary ain't making that play with that much weight hitting him.

I agree with this and I said it then. That one wasn't Jake, even though it was right at him. But, there are plenty of others that are his.
-
That's where I disagree, Prowler. That right there was a picture-perfect moment for Holland to do his thing. Look at where the linemen are. One right in front. One to his right. Ball carrier coming to his left.
If there's one thing Jake can do better than anyone in the history of football at any level, it's his ability to become a human hula hoop. He can twist his legs around a person's body better than a professional swing dancer.
He could have dropped kicked Hill right in the stomach and shut his ass down. It's like LSU was trying to lose risking a play like that.
But he missed it. He missed it, man.

I have to totally disagree with you. While I agree Jake is horrible, I agree with prowler there. Not sure Ray Lewis would have pushed that off. Although he probably would have popped a cap.

I quit trying to figure out his "extreme hyperboles" last year. After reading some of his knee jerk reasoning today, I could see him saying that and meaning it.

In all seriousness, is it his job to be standing still and allow himself to get pancaked like that? Isn't he supposed to be moving to avoid the double team?

Doesn't matter. A LB does not wait to be blocked.'as soon as he detects a run up
The middle,'he attacks the hole. Jake hardly ever attacks the hole first.
