Title: Johnny Football Suspended......
Post by: RWS on August 28, 2013, 03:22:50 PM
.....for the first half of the season opener vs. Rice, according to a text alert from ESPN.  Apparently this was an agreement between aTm and the NCAA.  I don't see the point in it.  He denied that he took money, and apparently the NCAA doesn't have proof otherwise.  If they did, certainly there would be other consequences.  It almost seems as if the NCAA "convinced" aTm to do it so the NCAA would look like they're doing something, or look like they're being tough on something.

It's stupid, either way.

That punishment is - dare I say it? - Sabanesque.

Why should he be suspended at all? Was there any proof? so this means I can video one of our players signing something and then say I paid him $101 dollars for it and he will get suspended?

WTF.

Dumb on so many levels my head is going to explode.

Punish someone who's not guilty, just to appease the masses, but don't really punish him at all.

Nice.

I don't even see why he should be suspended period.  If the NCAA had proof, things would be worse.  Manziel has denied he took any money.  I guess maybe the school brought it up because they're tired of him bringing negative attention to the team?

Well the operative part of your post is "one of our players".

Try that with someone who wears dark pink.

I guess this is for the same reason Chizik suspended Cam for like 30 seconds on a non-game day?

As I recall that is part of some compliance protocol when an allegation is made.

Either way, dumb.

Actually, IIRC, a hundred or less, they can simply pay back, with no penalty to eligibility.

Agree though.  If they can't prove he got paid, why punish him at all.

Auburn declared Cam ineligible so they could have the NCAA reinstate him.  That covers the school's ass, and is fairly common whether a player actually did something or not.  Alot of times you don't even know that it happened, because there is no requirement to suspend the player or anything.  Simply a procedural thing that gives an all clear on that player on that particular issue.  The only way the NCAA can go back on that is if they find there was some sort of deceit or fraud, coverup, etc.

As I understand it, even if they can prove that Uncle Nate took money from the autograph brokers--Tamu can be toast, for an itsy bitsy while probably. This is a result of the new definition of an agent post Cecil/Cam and Kenny Rogers. So, A&M is making a huge bet if he plays.

Meanwhile a female soccer player at the University of Nevada was discovered to have played a pickup game while doing mission work last year in Malawi. Her remaining eligibility is hereby revoked and the university soccer program is fined $350,000 for noncompliance. The coach has been fired and has a show cause clause for seven years so no other school can go after such a rampant cheater.

I'm okay with this if they're suspending him for being a dumbass.

Story says that the reason for the suspension is because he should have known better then to sign this stuff for someone who he knew was then going to sell it.

It isn't illegal for him to sign it even if he knows the guy will sell it, though.  If he didn't receive any money, then all is well.  I think maybe the suspension is because the school is tired of him bringing negative attention.  I could certainly understand that.

Supposedly this is what was referred to when Texas A&M offered punishment and the NCAA accepted:

Quote
Title:12.5.2.2 - Use of a Student-Athlete's Name or Picture Without Knowledge or Permission. If a student-athlete's name or picture appears on commercial items (e.g., T-shirts, sweatshirts, serving trays, playing cards, posters) or is used to promote a commercial product sold by an individual or agency without the student-athlete's knowledge or permission, the student-athlete (or the institution acting on behalf of the student-athlete) is required to take steps to stop such an activity in order to retain his or her eligibility for intercollegiate athletics. Such steps are not required in cases in which a student-athlete's photograph is sold by an individual or agency (e.g., private photographer, news agency) for private use. (Revised: 1/11/97, 5/12/05)

Texas A&M determined that Manziel knew these autographs would be sold for profit by an outside party and so they suspended him for a half.  The NCAA accepted this as punishment thinking that as of right now, there is no evidence that Manziel received any of the profit made off of his autographs.

So, basically Title: 12.5.2.2 is referring to everything uat has and is still doing, minus the part about the players not knowing they were being used to promote Ttown Menswear, Hot Wheelz customization shop & S.W.A.T's PEDs.

Yes it is...that's why he got suspended.

Quote
''Student-athletes are often asked for autographs from fans, but unfortunately, some individuals' sole motivation in seeking an autograph is for resale,'' said Kevin Lennon, NCAA vice president of academic and membership affairs. ''It is important that schools are cognizant and educate student-athletes about situations in which there is a strong likelihood that the autograph seeker plans to resell the items.''

Which makes this story and the T-Town Menswear story all the more laughable.

You're telling me those guys didn't know he would sell it for profit?

This will only support this new super division that the big conference commissioners are talking about forming, with its own governing body.

Exactly. Also uat coaches and the athletic department can't say they didn't know about that going on, because they were among the players signing autographs and setting up the signing sessions at Ttown Menswear.

I hope Manziel falls flat on his face this season.  Not because aTm beat Alabama last year, but because the kid is a douche bag.  After each touchdown he threw, he held his hands up and rubbed his fingers together (as you would when saying "show me the money").  During the 4th quarter, he drew a taunting penalty after getting in a defender's face and pointing at the scoreboard after a touchdown play.  After another play he was moving his hand around like he was autographing something in the face of a defender.  He was shaking his head as if saying "you're not getting my autograph."  He was being completely arrogant and acting like a child.  All of this against the mighty Rice Owls.

I really hope that I'm right when I say Alabama is going to take a shit in their front yard next week.  Rice was able to muster 509 yards on offense.  203 yards in the air, and 309 on the ground.  If they can't stop Alabama's running game, then they're fucked.  Even if they can, they have McCarron and a damn good WR corps to contend with.  Another problem is that on offense, Manziel really is aTm's only weapon this year.

Agree. I want to like Manziel. Freshman Heisman winner. Bullshit allegations reminiscent of what Cam went through.

But there's no denying he's a mega-douche.

If Alabama plays like this against aTm, the Aggies will win by at least 10.  OL looks like total shit.  Looks like I may have to eat my words.

Getting back on track here.  In defense of Johnny Football, even though the taunting incident was in poor taste, Rice defenders had been taunting him from the beginning.  He does need to keep his emotions in check, aggies need him this year

Fuck that.  I didn't see any Rice player taunting him, or doing anything like Manziel was doing.  Maybe it was just words, I don't know.  Sticks and stones.

For that matter, all of Manziel's issues in the offseason have been self-inflicted.  He has made himself a target for alot of shit that will come his way this season.

Yep, they were, friend (Aggie) went up there for it, says Rice defenders were doing the "sign" thing.  Don't excuse Manziel for his behavior, but he's got to know that everybody including Bama will be talking to him just like that.  We probably will be talking shit to him too.  Something he's just got to deal with.  Like you said, he has brought that shit on himself.  Grow up Johnny Football.
