I said I'd drive the Sexpedition until the wheels fall off. Well, the wheels are falling off. Made myself a promise earlier this year that the next significant repair would be the last one the old girl gets paid for by Snags. It's in the shop right now and the estimate just eclipsed $700.00....unless they find more.
I need some input on trucks/SUV's and maybe suggestions on dealerships that you've had good luck with. I am willing to drive to save the $$$. A few things. I know a lot of you suggest buying used and I'm not adverse to that. I bought the Sexpedition with 20K miles and honestly, it's been a good ride. But knowing this day was coming much sooner than later since I'm approaching 190K miles, I've been doing a ton of Sunday window shopping at all the dealerships around here. Been checking out all the new and used and these people around here are out dey damn minds if they think I'm paying what they're axing for used vehicles. They say a new one will depreciate about $5K as soon as you roll off the lot. But they're tacking it right back on and then some when they sell em' used.
Definitely looking for a truck or SUV as I need to tow shit from time to time. If I was one of those rich Dothan lawyers, I'd prefer an F-150, but they've now priced those out of my budget. Have no intention of paying $40K for a base model truck. I'm partial to Fords and like the look and drive of the F-150 but I don't see that happening. Right now, I'm renting a Dodge Ram 1500 while the repairman is bending me over. Not real impressed with it to be honest. (The Dodge, not the repairman) No pick up, bad blind spots and the hood is raised in the middle, which is distracting for some reason.
I have the Nissan Pathfinder in my top 3 as they completely changed the body style and interior this year. We've had 4 Nissans over the years and had good luck with them. Also, my buddy who had driven F-150's for years, just switched to a Silverado this year. With all the incentives and rebates etc. he got one loaded out (2WD) for $30K. Anyway, suggestions?
-
I have 3 Ford F-150's here at my work, (2003-2004 and 2006) one of them has over 100,000 and two of them have over 250,000 and they are work trucks, on the road everyday.
I had a Nissan X-terra (2000) that had over 170,000 and sold it for $1000.00 last month.
I don't think you could go wrong either way.
Of course if you want a vehicle with balls (never mind)

Used Market is shit right now.
Any respectable Lawyer of your stature should be caught in no less then this.

I have been a big fan of the Gee Em Cees, until they took Obama's handout. Luckily I bought my Yukon before that happened...I'm just a trip to the beach away from 100K on it, and it still rides like it's new. I love the look of the Sierra too; and if they hold up anything like their cousins, it would be around for a long time.
-
I love my Silverado Z71. It has over 230,000 on it and I will still drive it anywhere.

Hey that's what I have. Shall I give it to snags ?
-
Bunch of 1%'ers on here!
-
I love my Wrangler Unlimited, but towing capacity isn't a lot, so depends on what you are towing.
-
Wouldn't trade my Toyota Land Cruiser for anything else out there, 150,000 miles and still strong and dependable as a tank.

They still make those? Damn dude what do you have, a 1984 model ?
Dallas thinks mustangs are ultra keen. Cct says anything but an F250 and youre a beta male!
Snags are you flexible with brand, size, new/used?
-
I'm open to anything, brand wise. Except maybe the Dodge. Love the Yukons and Tahoe's but damn, they apparently love em' so much they price them so nobody will be able to take one from them.

Get off your wallet dude, you had the old car for like 15 years. Get yourself something nice.

I plan on it. I've already got a whole list of vehicles in that $5,000 - $7,500 range. Just a matter of choosing.

When kid #3 made her unexpected presence known we had to upsize the wife's car. We picked up a Nissan Armada from a private seller. We love it, get's OK mileage for a vehicle that size (around 18-20 on the interstate) and tows my boat like a sonofabitch. Three row seating with a rear seat that folds completely flat into the floor for tons of room. All of our friends who ride with us comment on how nice it is on the inside and more comfortable riding than Tahoe or Expedition.
I would watch some of the newer smaller Nissan SUV's (Xterra and Pathfinder). Major design flaw in the tranny cooling. http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2012/06/nissan-suvs-under-nhtsa-investigation-for-transmission-issues.html

Love my Chevy Avalanche. Four door truck with a small bed, but you can put the back seats and the mid-gate down and it's a full size bed if you need to carry something big. It tows my boat like there's nothing there. The gas mileage is not great on mine, about 15 mpg (an 05), but I think the newer ones do a little better.
Last year the wife needed something new, and decided on an 08 Hummer H3. The standard models are kind of doggy with the 5 cylinder engine they developed for the Chevy Colorado, but we found one of the Alphas that have the small V8 and it is much better. It gets about 16-17 mpg and pulls the boat OK. I am not as crazy about it as the wife is - she loves it - but it's a solid vehicle.

My father-in-law has a 4 door Ford Raptor. He's one of those people that is super picky, will take it back to the dealership because he can hear a washer on a bolt on the underbody wiggling slightly, etc. He says it is the best vehicle he has ever owned. I drove it to Talladega and back one weekend, and it rides like a Cadillac. It looks almost exactly like the picture GF posted, except his is 4 door. It is an expensive truck, but you will know where that extra money went.
If you look at any Dodge, if it doesn't have a Hemi or Cummins, don't bother. Their other motors are pretty shitty.
-
Guys, Snags is just toying with y'all. I was cleaning his pool today because I'm his cabana boy and saw that he already purchased this:

Stay away from Nissan products. Not because they are not good cars but because there are no secondary part suppliers. This means all replacement parts that you will use on it will have to be Nissan parts.
Which means $$$$$$$.

Not saying they're bad either but if I am buying a jap car, they are 3rd on list. Honda and Toyota are tops in the land of the rising sun. I've heard some in the industry refer to them as the Chrysler of Japan.
Snags,
SUVs - Rav 4, 4 runner, pilot, expedition, escape, Tahoe. Depending on how much room you need.
Trucks - f150, silverado, tundra. The rest aren't even close.
Cars - Camry, fusion, Altima, Benz c class, BMW 3 series, Acura, accord.
Cool factor - wrangler, raptor, keen mustang, charger

Hmmm. Tough call. I LOVE my F250D, but she is an 03 and I guess I got one of the good ones as she runs pretty decent. Ford screwed me early on by flashing the computer and detuning it, but I still love it. Would I get a new(used) one? Not sure. I haven't been impressed with the Ford engines since the 7.3, although my 6.0 has been good.
Now I have heard awesome things about the Ford ecotech. Yeah its a 6 cyl, but it has plenty of torque to pull your boat and it can get great MPG in the 2WD version. It has been out long enough now to get one off of lease and get a good deal. Drive one and see how you like it.
GM has made great strides with their trucks. Not a big GM fan, but their trucks are getting pretty good. The extra gubment money must have been used on better design.
Today you HAVE to look at MPG in anything you get. Unless you don't drive far everyday.
Just look out on the Atlanta Craigslist and you can see folks having a hard time paying for some very nice vehicles that they are willing to part with.
And after you find one you like, go out and search the interwebs for the whining and bitching. You'll see a trend with most vehicles. Keep in mind the number of units on the road vs. the number of people bitching. You only see the bitching, not the people loving it.
And if you really want to make your dick bigger, find you an old Excursion with a a 7.3 diesel and under 100K miles. It'll pull your boat easily...even with the house attached!

The new 6.4 L in them is the titz. Doesn't even require the glow plug warmup. Also makes little noise. Some the 6.X L engines between 02-08 were bad after they ditched the 7.3 power stroke. But they appear to be back on track. I had an 01 7.3. Loved it. My big issue now with them is the cost. I just have the 5.4 gas king Ranch now. Worse on gas but at 150k and going strong, I'm pleased. Not one issue.
Gm trucks have gotten better since around 04. That Allison drivetrain setup in their HDs is stout.

The 5.4 is a GAS HOG. That is why I got rid of it and went diesel. The new diesels have the piss tank. I'm not a fan of that, but at least a gallon is now around 10 bucks.
I cannot ever afford a new diesel. I got mine with 28K on it an now have 135K. And even then it was about 28K to buy. I won;t take that hit again.
I have an Expedition lease with the 4.6 and I loved that engine. Not too weak and got good MPG. A 2-3 yr old F150 with eh 4.6 would be a good option.
Then again, the GM 5.3 has proven to be bulletproof, but not great MPG?
So I would go to dealers and test drive 2-4 yr old trucks and find one I liked, then search the Craigslist for one.
The 4runners with the 3.4 aren't bad. But they too don't get great MPG.
One other option is a used Kia Sorrento. I have friends with them and they rave about them. The tow capacity is not but 3500lbs and I would not go far with that, but for short trips to the lake and all around driving..Plus the 100k mile warranty.

Mine personally would be Nissan, Honda, Toyo. I have owned all three and have nothing but solid luck out of them all except one Camry and it wasn't nothing major, just little stuff. Best vehicle I have ever owned was a Nissan 4-door, 4WD Frontier. I ragged the hell out of that truck and it was still running like a champ when I got rid of it with 260,000 on it.

Update: Went with the Nissan Pathfinder. Loaded with everything but GPS. Told the guy I didn't need it because I usually had someone in the passenger seat going, "Why didn't you turn there? You can get there quicker if you cut across here. You know this will take you a mile out of the way unless you..."
Anyway, I drove some Silverado's because they're decent looking and honestly, they've got some sweet deals going on them. I was looking at pretty much loaded out for right at $30K. (Not 4X4, don't need it) I just kept coming back to the SUV and loved the way this one looked and drove. As I said, my first choice was the F-150 but Ford has priced all their trucks well out of the Snags budget. This will be our 5th Nissan and we've had great luck with all of them.

You all cared when you were pimping your own rides. You cared. Get a Toyota, he says. The Ford F-250 is the titz, I heard. My Armada is the coolest most comfortable ride on the rode, they opined. The 6.4 liter, dual exhaust hemi Cummings 4X4 chasis universal joint semi truck is the way to go. Look at the pictures of my pussy wagon.
Oh you all cared, alright.
Then, let a guy pick something else and grief is all he gets. Grief, I tell ya'.

That's just it. Not one bit of trouble with 4 previous Nissans. Plus, I've got the Ultra-Super-Spectacular-BumperToBumper-Nine Year or 146,000.6 miles Protection Plan.
With roadside assistance.
