Title: Gus Gets To Processing
Post by: Snaggletiger on June 03, 2013, 10:32:17 AM
Honestly, even though these guys were not going to play much as long as the presumed starters stay injury-free, this kills us as far as our numbers at LB.  I can't blame either player or any player at another school if they leave for a chance to get on the field.  You don't bust your ass all that time to sit for 4 years.  It's part of the game but I think it makes our situation at LB a little precarious.

Auburn linebackers Harris Gaston and Chris Landrum will transfer to Jacksonville State in search of more playing time, according to reports.

Landrum's impending transfer was confirmed by Landrum's mother in an AuburnUndercover.com report. Gaston's departure was reported by AuburnSports.com. An Auburn spokesperson confirmed later Friday night that Landrum has left the team, but was unable to confirm Gaston's reported departure.

Neither linebacker exited spring practices on Auburn's two-deep depth chart. Landrum moved from linebacker to fullback in 2012, but returned to middle linebacker this spring. Gaston, a senior, totaled 12 tackles in 2009 and 2010 but did not participate in football in 2011 and 2012.

Landrum, a Sweet Water, Alabama native, was considered one of the top 20 players in the state coming out of high school in 2010. He was rated No. 17 in the Mobile Press-Register's Elite 18 and led Sweet Water to the 2010 state title, where he earned MVP honors.

Gaston is a Birmingham, Alabama native and played football at Bessemer Academy, where he was No. 10 on the Birmingham News' Super Seniors list.

Kris Frost exited Auburn's spring practices as the presumed starter with Jake Holland also pushing for playing time at "Mike" linebacker. Landrum was outside the top three at the spot, but was competing for playing time in at least two positions during the spring.

Gaston and Landrum should be eligible to compete immediately at Jacksonville State, a Football Championship Subdivision school.

I thought Harris Gaston had already left to be a linebacker for Alabama?

I remember the recruitment of both of these guys and esp thinking that Gaston would see some pt early on. If I remember correctly, he had good size coming in. My bet is it was more a problem with development than with potential.

And yep to Snags point. Def a position we can't afford to lose guys. When Jake is in the 2 deep, you know we be hurting.

Gaston was a Walk-on. They saw the sign...Jake Holland isn't starting, which means there's a better Linebacker than him.

Correction: Both were three stars and both were committed to Auburn around 9 months prior to Signing Day.
