Title: Question for Marines
Post by: Townhallsavoy on May 17, 2013, 09:41:52 AM
Since when did you start holding umbrellas?

This is where I am at with it....

The anointed one should know that they have never done that and should have never have told him to.

Conversely the Marine was told to do something by his commander and chief so he had best snap to and do it.

You can see it on the marine's face.

"I'm going to be known as the umbrella soldier.  The tomb of the umbrella soldier where it's always raining.  No wonder Dad called me all those names growing up."

When that boot ass fucker gets to the fleet after being at 8&I that will be the least of his worries about what he gets called.

Kind of my point.  There are plenty of legit reasons to call him out.  Why even bother trying to muster outrage over this?

People still make fun of Bush for his innocuous speech blunders.  But we should hold off on any kind of satire with Obama, right?

In this threads' defense, I think it was initially more about the marine part than Obama. As in, it's just a little unusual seeing a marine holding an umbrella as a job duty - for whoever it is. Since this was the President, as sani said, he didn't really have much choice.

Not sure "outrage" is the right word. And I agree that this group tends to find whatever they can to feign outrage over when it comes to this president.

But this plays like an editorial cartoon.

The SAME WEEK that Obama is getting (justifiably) slammed for grossly abusing executive order of federal agencies, he gets a Marine to hold his umbrella for him for a photo.

You don't see the connection?

Let Mit Romney do it, and see what you think. Especially in an alternate universe where he won the presidency and was in the midst of a week where his misuse of government agencies for his personal benefit were hitting the media.

I'm just sayin', it's pretty symbolic.

Holy hell. You turn 30 and its like your eyes open up. LOL

I think this hits it spot on. Folks on the right HAVE to be outraged by every little thing. We do not have the MSM doing it for us.

If the media attacked EVERY politician on the mistakes they make, this country would be in a better place.

Accountability for BOTH sides is a good thing.

See. That's the difference. The right actually invites the scrutiny. We just want it for everyone.

There has been very little when it comes to this admin. And that puts this country on a very scary path. One that has been taken by other countries in the past.

Don't get ahead of yourself. If you're genuinely outraged by this, then I agree with Wes.

If you note the symbolism and shake your head at the irony, that's perfectly warranted, IMO.

Outrage is probably the wrong term. But there has to be accountability. And unfortunately only the crazies get any attention these days.

It's like the westboro baptist people. They get a ton of press when they show up. But the hundreds of folks lining the road only get a small amount.

I feel like conservatives are the ones that are quietly lining the roads.

Here's where I come down on this:

My boss sometimes asks me to do shit that I'm way overqualified for and that could be better delegated to someone else.

I have to do that shit anyway, because he's the boss.

Hence, no one here is upset with the Marine, just his ASSHOLE boss!

So if he had called an Army Ranger over as opposed to a Marine, no one would have minded.

Glad that's cleared up.

I have a feeling I'll get a resounding NO from the Vets and those in the military.  But....is it somehow possible that this Marine took it upon himself to do this?  Or is a good gesture towards his Commander in Chief totally off limits?  Really asking.  Do we know Obama told him to grab that umbrella and hold it over him?

Yeah, he specifically asked for it:

Quote from: President Obama
"Why don't we get a couple of Marines — they're gonna look good next to us. Just 'cuz I — I've got a change of suits, but I don't know about our prime minister. There we go. (Gestures to press, which did not get Umbrella Marines.) You guys I'm sorry about."

I don't think a Marine would be allowed to move about during a President's speech (or any other time when he is told to remain in place at attention or at ease) without orders allowing him to do so.  Because Marines can't use umbrellas, he would have to go somewhere else to get one.  Even if he just grabbed one from a couple of feet away from secret service or someone else, I'm relatively sure it would be a breach of protocol to do so without orders.

He would not have moved from his position to hold the umbrella unless told to do so. I disagree with all three photos of Active members holding an umbrella, I understand they are Commander in Chief and for that they get my repsect but as a human they are no better than me.

If this happened 2 weeks ago, I'd agree that any criticism of it would be way overblown.

Part of me understands that someone needs to hold an umbrella (Degrading as it may be) if the President is giving a speech in the pouring rain.  If the President is walking along, as is the case with Reagan, then hold your own damn umbrella.  I do think he needs to have a flunky hold it and not a service member, regardless of branch.

Well yeah.  Everyone knows the Marines are prettier and have the best dress uniform. So they stand out more.

This Marine will have his image etched in history. I wonder if he'll look back one day and talk about his time with the messiah!

I am sure the "one" will have one built to show his toughness and duty to country. Right next to this one.

I didn't post this for criticism.  I posted it for humor.

But as usual, Obama supporters cannot allow any kind of satire or sarcasm to be directed at the president.  It was a big comedic fete when Bush was in office, but a mere picture of Obama being shielded by acid rain means we're just jealous Republicans who are raging against all things Blue.

I think chad made a good point on the ill timing. I find it amusing but I have more important things to get enraged with Barry about than this. IRS , Doj, Benghazi, etc.

Btw - who is holding Reagan's? Doesn't appear to be a serviceman. Besides he was elderly. Whoever was holding it was just "helping his elders".

For the record, my point from my first post was clearly that this is not worthy of "outrage" by any stretch.

It is worthy of satire considering the symbolism of what was going on within that same week. No more, no less.
