Has it been announced if we will have a designated QB coach or will Gus Bus do that himself?
I'll hang up and listen...

I believe Gus and and Rhett share that responsibility, which concerns me. Maybe moreso Rhett than Gus because:
"He spent three years as Malzahn's quarterback at Shiloh Christian High School in Arkansas and has worked under him in the prep ranks and at three different colleges, including their initial stop in Auburn."

According to what Gus is saying, he's going to be the Head Coach. His coaches will be responsible for the game planning, and play calling, within his philosophical model of course. Gus said he wants to be able to go to the defensive practice fields and let them know he's there. Feels like they need to see the HC too. He refers to Lashlee as his right hand man, and I believe he trusts him to run the offense. Obviously, Gus will always have veto power. Those are the things he's saying.

And Gus has a lot of experience with Rhett. I doubt Gus would give him that position if he had any reservations about his ability to run the offense effectively.

I do believe Gus in his statements. I'm sure he wants to establish a sense of accountability as well. I highly doubt, however, that ol Gus will be able to refrain from offensive play calling.
-
He's gonna be the best QB coach since Joe Mantaegna!

I'm very happy Coach Lash is back at Auburn.

Wasn't Capn Rhett part of the Resurrection of Chris Todd? I seem to remember that being during his GA stint.

He was one of Gus' GA's in 2009 and 2010

I'd be worried. That fucking Malzahn has screwed up every QB he's ever coached. He caused Barrett Trotter to quit for chrishakes.

One thing I know...KNOW....Gus trusts Lashlee. My best bud called me the day Gus was hired to discuss who would be OC, DC, et. I had no doubt the OC would be Lashlee. They are like peas and carrots. Whoever is "calling plays" it's the same thing.

Are you trying to say that there is an inappropriate relationship between our HC and OC? First, let me warn you that this is almost the 21st century. We should be more open minded toward this, assuming we at least rank in the top 10 to 15% in offense. :rimshot:

So it doesn't bother you that the guy calling the plays is a 29 year old who has never held a position of any kind (outside of GA) at the D-1 level?

Pat Sullivan hired him as OC at Samford in 2011, and then Gus took him to Ark. St. last year as OC. He knows the offense, and what Gus wants to do.

If experience was all that important we'd still be waiting for someone to walk on the moon.

Well, I'm not saying experience isn't important, but it's not like he has none either. He played in the offense in HS for Gus, and has been with Gus for much of Gus' college career.

Yea and I bet you rocked it like a porn star the first time you got laid. Sometimes a little experience helps.

I can buy that. Maybe. I just have some reservations about this hire knowing offensive production is going to be the driving force behind this team.

Id worry more about how long it's going to take Gus and Co.whip these players in to shape, and finding/making a serviceable QB than I would about "play calling".
Play calling, for the most part, is done on Sunday and Monday in the meeting rooms. Malzahn has very few plays, lots of formations. The way they practice, on saturday, everybody pretty much knows what plays will be called based on situation and field position. They keep things looking different on film by changing formations and motions, but running the same plays, which keeps it easy on the OL, and helps them go fast.

Honestly, I'd be much more concerned if we got some kind of rock star OC.
Gus is gonna Gus. He will own the offense. If some other OC with his own philosophy and his own proven system were to come in, and Gus meddled, it would not end well.

Exactly. He's going to let Lash run the offense, but it's still Gus' offense, just being run by someone he knows will do it the way he wants it run.

For some reason though, I'm not worried about player motivation as much. These guys made fools of themselves on the field last season and if they don't have the drive within themselves to prove they aren't a bunch of suckass players, then we are gonna be in trouble eitherway.
Btw, the idea of a high tempo offense that runs a few plays and lots of formations scares the shit out of me and this is why. When an offense's success is predicated mainly on tempo, what gonna happen when they fail to get first downs and maintain that tempo? Answer: Auburn's defense will be the ones worn out, not the opponents. Thats why I kinda skeptical about letting Lashlee call plays. Our defense is already gonna be behind the proverbial 8-ball by not having an offense that can control the clock. Play calling is and keeping those chains moving are paramount, imo.

The new high tempo era is all about tempo, not plays. You can't have a great number of plays and go fast. Gus will have 4 base runs, and 6 base passes. Add formations, and tags, window dressing here and there, and it's his offense. Like it or hate it, it's the direction we've chosen to go with Gus. Was not my first choice either as I share your concerns on defense, but it's where we've gone.

But there will also be plays added specifically for certain opponents. But these will not be run over and over and over like the main plays. Gus understands that you have to attack specific weaknesses of a defense like that.
The only thing that bothered me about Gus' offense was he spent most of the first half "probing" the other team's defense. All the while, the other team's offense was scoring!

Nice job in breaking it down JR. And don't get me wrong, I'll be one of Gus' biggest sunshine pumpers by the time the season gets here. However, I'm just having a hard time buying into it right now. I know several folks who did nothing but bitch about all the bubble screens and speed sweeps the last time Gus was here. Now they are spraying sunshine over every move he makes. Please note I'm not refering to anyone on this board. Just some random observations I've made from other boards and such.

Sure, they'll always have little wrinkles each week. More in the form of window dressing, than actual 'new plays'. But sometimes.
Gus is, from the start, a Wing T guy. He says "we do this until you stop it, then, we have one answer for the adjustment." Schematically it really is very simple, and why it broke down when Chiz tried to put the brakes on him. Way too predictable, and only works at this level when the defense has no time to think, and adjust, and make subs.
He also has a specific philosophy that he's going to run 4 trick plays or reverses a game, and take at least 8 shots down the field in the passing game per game.

Getting behind the coach. As I said I wasn't in favor of him coming back either, and I'm a big fan of him, and his offense. Just don't think with the current state of things in the SECW that this is the way to get to the mountain top. I think we'll win, but not a championship. I'm an offense guy, but defense wins championship. 2010 was an exception, not the rule. Even then defense was what won the title game.

Its like the guy has taken the offensive playbook and added in the quadratic equation.

That's a pretty big risk. It seems like the right defenses could scheme to take Gus' offense completely out of it's element. Is this why his offense seemingly either worked very well, or fell flat on it's face at times?

His offenses never really fell flat on its face till his last year as OC at Auburn.

Two sides to that coin. Gus can scheme, like with formations and motions, to get you in the fronts and coverages he wants too in order to create the assignment conflict he wants. Again though, the whole point is to keep it simple for the offensive players to execute fast, but look complicated to the defense. But, if you have Clint Moseley at QB, it really matters not how much you scheme, or if you run the flexbone, the Air Raid, the lonesome polecat, or the facemelter offense. It aint gonna be pretty.
-

Not to mention a career running offense with a lot more success than failure.

I'm too old to flexbone. I lean toward the easy spread nowadays.

Gus Malzahn reportedly interested in Dameyune Craig
By Chris Fuhrmeister on Dec 12, 11:26a 5
As he continues to fill out his staff, Gus Malzahn may attempt to bring former Auburn great Dameyune Craig home.
Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn is still working to build his coaching staff, and he may be eyeing Florida State quarterbacks coach Dameyune Craig, according to CoachingSearch.com.
Sources tell me that Gus Malzahn is considering adding FSU assistant Dameyune Craig to his staff. bit.ly/xpkQEX
— Pete Roussel (@coachingsearch) December 12, 2012
It's likely that Craig is being considered more for his recruiting prowess, as opposed to his coaching abilities. Not that there's anything wrong with Craig's coaching abilities, but offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee will coach Auburn's quarterbacks. If he's hired, Craig will likely coach running backs or wide receivers and act as Auburn's recruiting coordinator. He coached receivers at South Alabama in 2008 and '09, giving Craig a connection to the fertile Mobile recruiting ground.
According to Tomahawk Nation, Craig currently makes $205,000 per season with FSU, a number Auburn should be able to easily top.
As a recruiter with the Seminoles, Craig has earned a sterling reputation. Since his arrival in Tallahassee in 2010, Florida State has finished ninth, second and second in the 247Sports team recruiting rankings. The Seminoles' current class is ranked 11th by 247Sports. Auburn and Florida State have faced off in several battles for high-profile recruits over the last few years, and the players that have committed to the Seminoles, including defensive tackle Eddie Goldman, cornerback Ronald Darby and quarterback Jameis Winston, have all had Craig as their primary recruiter.
Those battles with Auburn have led to some fans in orange and blue to hold ill will toward Craig. Despite being an Auburn alum, he is rumored to have used negative tactics against the Tigers, including allegations of racism.
Craig played quarterback for Auburn from 1994 to '97, starting his final two years. In his senior season, he passed for 3,277 yards, 18 touchdowns and 17 interceptions, leading Auburn to a 10-3 record and its first appearance in the SEC Championship Game. The Tigers fell in Atlanta by one point, 30-29, to Peyton Manning's Tennessee Volunteers.
I read the bold after posting. Hopefully WR coach, at least? Can't see why he'd coach RBs...

Would be a huge hire. He recruits Mobile and south AL like a mad man. Now if we could just add T-Rock to that and steal Vandy's OL coach, then I will start to get warm fuzzies. I would love for Searles to leave TX and come home, but would take Herb and be happy.

I'm right there with you. I have to give it to Gus, he has been diligent since becoming the AU HC. This could very will be a bad ass coaching staff.
