Title: More Cass, Less Kris

AUBURN, Alabama -- Freshman middle linebacker Cassanova McKinzy may have a chance to take over the starting role on Saturday from junior Jake Holland, who has 48 tackles this season.

Former walk-on Ashton Richardson had four tackles and a sack on Saturday in relief of Holland at times.

"All three of those guys will get some reps," defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder said. "Cass will get some reps, and we'll see how ready he is to stand in front of a huddle and manage it."

McKinzy, a 6-3, 243-pounder from Birmingham's Woodlawn High School, played sparingly against both Louisiana-Monroe and Arkansas.

If McKinzy were to earn the role as the starter, VanGorder said, Holland will become the backup.

"We've seen a player get more and more comfortable in the college game," VanGorder said. "You know, he had a slow start in all those things, and we've been seeing him graduate, get better, evolve. We'll give him a shot this week during practice."

Redshirt freshman outside linebacker Kris Frost is also improving, and VanGorder said he may get a chance to see some time later in the season, but Frost is still learning the game.

"I wish the process were faster for Kris, but it's just not," VanGorder said. "But I like what I see for him in the future. He works hard at it."

If there's a change at the linebacker position for Auburn, it will be in the middle. On the weak side, Daren Bates leads the SEC with 70 tackles, and he's added 5.5 tackles-for-loss, two sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery.

"Daren's been fairly productive for us at the Will position," VanGorder said. "Really, we're looking at the Mike linebacker."

Running up and touching the pile of players (5 to 15 yards) downfield should not constitute a tackle.

Vand Gorder needs to realize his nickle package is getting schemed to death and that is a big reason we are getting raped on the ground. If there is a TE or 2 backs in the game, he needs to have 3 LBs on the field. Either that or do some late shifting (which I hardly ever see) and drop a safety down in the box before the ball is snapped. AU's defense does 0 in terms of creating confusion for the offense. Thats a big reason AU only has 1 int this season. Teams all year have been lining up in 3 WR sets, identifying AU's nickle package and popping big run plays. Its a numbers game, you've got 6 blocking 6 with the RB free to pick a hole. The only time this D has looked salty and stops people is when the D-line dominates. Since AU's D-line isn't capable of dominating every play (and very few teams are), BVG needs to get people in the box to help stop the run. He also needs to create confusion with different looks, stunts, and late shifts. Maybe its just me but I don't recall AU's DTs run a stunt all year. If teams throw for 500 yards a game so be it but this 200 yards rushing a game shit by our opponents has to stop.

I take issue with this part. Back in the 80s, not many teams could throw like they do today. Run set up the pass. Now, many teams use the pass to set up the run. And they can throw 500 yds and multiple TDs on you quick.

But we stop neither very well. So my point is probably moot.

If you ask Prowler, it's because BVG's defense is SO complicated, and is a completely different language compared to Roof's.  Even though I keep asking him how, I get no response.  Your post somewhat hits on this.  BVG's defense isn't doing anything exotic, not using any weird blitzing schemes or zones, and doesn't really do anything to disguise coverages or blitzes.  You don't see them shift in or out of blitzes, coverages, etc.  So, I'm not sure how any of this complicated stuff they are trying to execute, according to Prowler, can be the cause of some of the problems on defense.

His defense is one of a kind.  You ever seen any other defenses teaching not to tackle?

Good stuff.  Haven't specifically looked at the defense as a whole that way.  Was looking the past few days at personnel.   Other than Holland, who we all know sucks.  Whittaker, Ford, the whole DL has been largely invisible and pushed around.  Bates is the only LB playing worth a shit.

Lemonier doesn't helps our run D and at 260 will get a shot at the NFL as a LB so why not move him to Mike and occaisionally work him from the end spot?
