Title: The Replacements
Post by: Townhallsavoy on September 18, 2012, 04:10:07 PM
This got brought up in a different thread -

I can only go back to 2003, so that's the year I'm stopping with.

Out of every defense we've had since 2003, are there any players that you would not want in place of our current starters?

Here's our depth chart:

DE - Dee Ford
DT - Jeff Whitaker
DT - Angelo Blackson
DE - Corey Lemonier

LB - Daren Bates
LB - Jake Holland
LB - Jonathan Evans

CB - Chris Davis
S - Jermaine Whitehead
S - Demetruce McNeal or Trent Fisher
CB - Ryan White or T'Sharven Bell

I think I'd keep Corey Lemonier a few years.  But the rest?

Some sources to view old depth charts :

2003 - http://www.nationalchamps.net/2003/sub/teams/auburn.htm
2004 - http://www.nationalchamps.net/2004/sub/previews/auburn.htm
2005 - http://www.nationalchamps.net/2005/sub/previews/auburn.htm
2006 - http://cfn.scout.com/2/554723.html
2007 - http://cfn.scout.com/2/633864.html
2008 - http://cfn.scout.com/2/745652.html
2009 - http://cfn.scout.com/2/867323.html
2010 - http://cfn.scout.com/2/985032.html
2011 - http://www.sectalk.com/board/topic/70408-auburns-2011-depth-chart/ (practically the same as this year)

I'd take everyone on every defense from 2003-2010 over the guys we have starting this year except for maybe when Marquis Gunn was starting at end.  I'd take Lemonier over him and probably over Antonio Coleman as well.

As for the other positions?  Not one.  Not one 2012 starter would play over any of those guys.

For me, the jury is still out on Dee Ford.  He shows flashes of being a beast off the end.  Other than that...not a damn one.

The jury is technically still out on all of them.

Ford's been okay.  He's great when he can use his speed.

7 tackles, four assists in three games isn't all that great.

And you better believe his skinny ass is begging for a scholarship from 2003-2008.

Question.  Has Kriss Frost played at all this year?  I honestly don't recall seeing him.

Do not think so.  He's sporting Bynes' #17, I think.

I saw him standing near the huddle during a timeout.

I think he has gotten a little bit of playing time.

This is mind boggling.  I don't give a rats ass whether or not he knows the calls or gets out of position now and then.  We need someone athletic and aggressive out there...now!!!

This is what I don't understand about the staff and what is really the most concerning to me. Frost is a redshirt freshman that was supposed to be an absolute stud coming out of high school. Every college in the nation recruited this guy. Auburn redshirts him, which I don't mind, but this year I haven't seen him anywhere. Not even on special teams. How is this possible?

If Frost was the only one, I would chalk it up to his game not translating to college. But every god damn defensive recruit we have has been the same way.

Gabe Wright
Jeffrey Whitaker
Jake Holland
And everyone of our DB's...rose, therezie, florence...the list goes on and on...

You would think that one guy would be a Honey Badger.  One guy on the line would be Fairley-esque and occasionally blow shit up.  I watched  good bit of Rutgers/USF the other night and Rutgers had a LB that seemed to be in on every single play.  He was scary good.  Not a soul on our D, outside of Lemonier and at times, Ford, have shown any signs whatsoever that they're going to step up and be as advertised.

And Ford wasn't even a big name coming out of HS.

Maybe after the game gets out of hand we see some new faces.

Then there are issues with the staff and their development process, because WE is right. A lot of these guys EVERYONE wanted. I don't buy Gabe Wright being a 4 or 5 star because we wanted him, because everyone wanted this cat. Same with Frost.

Yeah, we got some true top recruits, I just don't think it's as many as some want to believe.  Then there's the lack of development part too.

The program up the way is light years ahead of us.

No, I was watching our lack of development in person and supporting the economic development of Opelika/Auburn. And support it i did.
