Just trying to make a little sense of the rest of the season based on what I've seen.
Auburn's strengths from Saturday:
- Strong running game (Mason over 100, McCallebb over 80) without our starting center
- Consistent threats from Emory Blake and Lutz
- Defensive penetration on pass plays
- Limiting points scored against us
- Kicking game
Auburn's weaknesses:
- Pass protection
- Quarterback accuracy
- QB buying time in the pocket to deliver throw
- Defensive running game especially up the middle
- Consistent tackling
- Diverse receivers
- 3rd down conversions both offensively and defensively
- Punt return
Looking at the rest of our schedule, I think we can claim the following as wins:
LA Monroe
Ole Miss
New Mexico State
Alabama A&M
Games we should win:
Miss State - It's in Starkville, but that's not too much of a factor since their crowd sucks. I don't think they will pressure our quarterback like Clemson did, so we should have a bit more time to find Blake or Lutz down field. Their rush defense should be stout, but I have faith that our change of pace in Mason and OMac will open up lanes for us to get yards. Offensively, I'd be surprised to see us not score at least 21 points. Our kicking game is solid and we can rely on field goals even from a far distance. That gets us at least 3 more points. The magic number is 24 for our defense. Miss State has very little reliability when it comes to turnovers and consistent offensive play. This is mainly based on their history under Mullen. I fully expect our defense to force one or two key turnovers that swing the game our way. They have a few dangerous receivers, but none that are more dangerous than Clemson's. Their running back is no where near as elusive, fast, and strong as Ellington. If I had to make a prediction, I'd say 24-21, Auburn wins.
Vanderbilt - It's in Nashville, but again, their crowd is small and while they may be rowdy, I don't think Vanderbilt comes into the game like they did in 2008. They play @Georgia (loss), open week to recover, @Missouri (likely loss), Florida (possible loss), and then host Auburn. Vanderbilt is very precise on offense. This will be killer to our defensive ability, and I'd put money on Zac Stacy puttng up big numbers on us. Also, their quarterback will shred us down field quite often. However, I think our athletic superiority will help us in the red zone and limit them to more field goals than touchdowns. On the flip side, our offense should be clicking better by this game. Our running game should move well against a smaller Vandy line. We can then hit play action pass and get into the endzone. This won't be an easy win, but it'll be easier than Miss State.
Texas A&M - This one's at home. They have a nasty running back, but that's it. With a new coach that's trying to implement a new offensive system, I expect them to struggle this season. They'll look like rock stars against our defense. But that's okay. The home crowd will help rattle the Aggies enough that we can squeeze out the late win.
Games We Could Win:
Arkansas - It's at home. We'll be hungry to beat this team especially after LSU week. Win or lose against LSU, we'll want to rebound against Arkansas with a solid home performance. The open date only helps our young guys get their heads back right. However, Arkansas has a dangerous quarterback that doesn't quit and doesn't get rattled. Knile Davis will run well, but they don't have the receivers to scare me like other teams do. I don't see them shredding us like they did last year. Defensively, Arkansas is a bit light in the ass. We can run on them, and we can use the home field advantage to get ahead. Whether or not we can actually pull out the win? No clue.
Georgia - Buffalo had success running the ball up the middle especially when their backs tried to be shifty. Georgia's defense is aggressive. Play action, draws, counters, perhaps the option - we could catch them off guard. Of course, that was without numerous defensive starters. What we can't do is win on defense. Georgia has talented running backs despite losing Crowell. Murray is a third year starter who has plenty of reliable options at receiver. Georgia will score at least 28 points against our defense, and that's limiting them due to the home crowd screaming their asses off. We have to keep up with them and hope for a turnover or two to bounce our way.
Games We Cannot Win:
LSU - They pound the ball up the middle, and that's our biggest weakness. They have talented receivers that can make people miss. Their defense is suffocating, and their pass rush is the most dangerous in the country. We do not match up against them at all.
Alabama - Similar to LSU, Alabama pounds it up the middle, utilizes play action pass, and has a suffocating defense. It's also at Alabama. We may be able to keep this one respectable.
I'm ready for more football.

Spot-on analysis. I thought about writing a similar thing, but it wouldn't have been as well written.
I completely 100% agree with your selections for each category. If I would change a word I would change "Games We Cannot Win" to "Games We're Pretty Fuckin' Unlikely To Win", but that's just semantics. There's always a chance. Just not a good one for those games.
Based on that analysis, which I share completely, I think we go 8-4. I don't think we drop any of the "Should Wins" and I think we split the "Could Wins" based on how those teams performed this weekend.
-
Fuck yall.
I think we win the rest of them.

Why be rational? It's more fun to run around screaming and freaking out.

Does this mean no white dudes or women at WR?

I'm thinking that the Miss St game is going to be tough. As for Vandy.. I think Auburn will win that one. I can see there being a bunch of Auburn folks at that game since there are a great # of Auburn fans/grads here in Huntsville, and it's only an hour up the road. I will say though, watching the Vandy/SC game it looked like their fans were more "into it" than they have been in a long while. I think SC was one bad call away from about losing that game.

I don't know how any visiting team can play with 24,526 fans occasionally raising their voice.
-
I did not include bowl games or SEC championship.
2007 8-4
2008 5-7
2009 7-5
2010 12-0 (perfect storm-Cam-Nick and crew)
2011 7-5
2012 projected 8-4 to 9-3
This is 4 years of mediocrity (With a 12-0 sandwiched in) and with what we are looking at this year might as well call it 5 years.
Eventually the bottom line will start to be affected-I am fan first but the expense of coming to a game (I know I’m not local) has to come into play. A weekend game for me is about $1200.00 to 1400.00. Nobody wants to win more than me, but something has got to start changing.
How much fucking longer are we gonna be young?
EDIT: Should we lose to Miss St-Look how many empty seats there will be for the Home Opener.

Well yeah, it's improved over the 24,000 fans "rarely" raising their voice that you usually see at Vandy.. heh. Although it's still Vandy, they looked better than usual last week.

It wasn't that bad. It was bad. But not that bad.
Although, I guess if you want to be pessimistic, you could say that without Blake's long catch against broken coverage, we wouldn't have scored any touchdowns.

It was an offense with no identity and a defense with no toughness.

I agree on the mediocrity thing and we may....may have to suffer through one more year of it from what I saw Saturday night. Gonna' reserve judgment on that until after this coming Saturday. I think this team has talent, lots of it. The recruiting gurus can't be wrong on all of them. I also think "young" is not an excuse anymore. Last year, yep. But, this team needs something good to happen for it and early on. They need something to give it complete confidence and...dare I say it...swaggah. Yes, I said it.
As for making the trek to AU, my ample sized ass would have been sitting in Section 8, row 44, seat 9 for Utah State last year, whether or not we went 14-0 and won the MNC in 2010, or slopped around to 4-8. I read the Creed.

I read the Creed.
Did you miss the clause about it being null and void if the team sucks?

They're just kids. Talk that trash around here again and I'll spike your warn meter and give everyone here a stern lecture, then threaten to shut this place down.

As was I (different seats) no way two ample asses fit in that seat.
And when I say affecting the bottom line it’s not folks like me, I make my two or three games a year cause I wanna come home, it’s the local guy who could find something else. I have to make the ULM games as tickets are easier for me to get (Still looking people) We feel we are better than our record from the last 4 years, but yet we are not.
I am still just frustrated from the past game this weekend.

Wow lots of chicken littles running the coop today. Lots of season yet to be played.

Agreed. I just still have a hangover from last year. Saturday night felt a lot like it. Hoping so bad they'd come out and immediately proclaim that last year was a fluke....a distant memory. New staff, new attitude. Did they get hammered like they did in 4 games last year? Not on the scoreboard. But 560 yards on Brain Van Gorder's D just made me  I don't care if Climpsim is damn good or not. THAT should never happen to an Auburn D.
Now, having said that, I still think there's a ton of talent and this team could very well turn out to be very good. I can see this bunch struggling early but by the end of the year, being the team no one wants to play. But that defense has to sack up and Kalil had better get his shit together and learn to throw a simple 15-20 yard pass.

Yup, one game where Auburn had the lead late in the 4th qtr. against the reigning ACC Champs and #14 team in the Country (we also had a new starting QB, basically a new OL, and two new Coordinators...also a change in philosophy on Offense). But, we got beat down towards the end of the game. We will get better, those that are writing off the season already need to sit the fuck down and shut the fuck up...it's the first game, wait until latet in the season to make your statements of doom and gloom, if it comes to that (which it probably won't). Because right now, you just sound like a retarded bammer with your doom and gloom bullshit.

I disagree. Had we committed to the run game with Prosch and Mason, we would have won the game.

Very possibly. They really couldn't stop us and running it effectively might lessen the time we are forced the opposition is forced to see our defense. Only I thought that's what we attempted to pull-off last season. There was a key 3rd and 4 when I thought we could see a run call but I think Loeffler would never consider such.

Not saying we'll get THAT much better, but the 2010 team wasn't a great team until after Clemson, and they discovered what they really had in Cam and Fairley. These new coordinators have just gotten their first taste of what their talent can do in reality, not just in practice. If they're good, we'll improve.
-

My question is, how in the hell could we not? Half serious here. This D surprised me at how many yards we gave up and we did look improved over last year but only slightly. Really all that I was disappointed in on O was Frazier's passing. If we are going to make a run for a bowl game--we need to win Saturday. Not saying we couldn't get to 6 if we lose but just believe we really need it as a building block win.

I think our QB started pressing after he missed on some, his footwork got sloppy and he held the ball too long for some loses where he gave way finally to the pursuit but he wasn't really sacked in a classic sense. State will test him but I suspect Kiehl will eliminate a good deal of those errors we saw in the opener. The kid will improve.

Not only that, but Coach Loeffler will also improve in his playcalling, remember he's still learning about his Offensive players against live competition.
