Title: Joe Pa?
Post by: JR4AU on July 23, 2012, 11:44:14 AM
Can anyone here think of a bigger fall from grace, in any aspect of life, sports or otherwise?  I've said it before, I was never really a PSU fan, but I always thought Joe Pa. was the last of the old school guys, and that he was doing it right.  Turns out, he was every bit the tyrannical control freak, and as dirty, or dirtier than anybody you can imagine, sports or otherwise.  Can anybody think of anybody who did so much to build a program and legacy, and then completely wipe it out and leave the program worse than it ever was in it's history?  Can anybody think of anything comparable?  I can't.

The only thing comparable I can think of is Jimmy Swaggart.  Went from preaching on (reportedly) 3000+ tv stations nation wide to defrocked off the air in the matter of about 2 weeks over a sex scandal with a prostitute.

Jim and Tammy Faye Baker come to mind too.  I think the issue here in JR's question is obviously, has anyone ever left a bigger mess behind.  Equally big figures have fallen from grace, but I can't think of anyone either who left so much collateral damage as Joe Pa.

Well, it's a 2 part question.  I guess it's my inherent distrust in organized religion that makes Swaggart and Baker's fall from grace just a "meh" by comparison.  I really held Joe Pa in the highest regard as far as ethics.  I felt he was coaching for all the right reasons.  I now ask, honestly ask, is a decent human being capable of holding the head spot at a major BCS level program, and be successful, or do you have to be a ruthless, controlling, win at all costs, sack of shit?

Richard Nixon screwed up the republican party in the eye of the nation so badly that we elected Jimmy Carter.

Some of that damage is still not cleaned up to this day.

This deal with Joe Pa is the worst I have seen in my lifetime that I can recall.  It's bad.

Not one.

OJ Simpson had a big fall, but he wasn't seen as an icon of morality and respect.

Jimmy Swaggart was just soliciting a prostitute; that's not even close to protecting child rape.

If it’s true that our species is alone in the universe, then I’d have to say that the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little.

Yeah, you are right. Its called the Housing Market Collapse.

I heard Phillip Marshall on Sportscall one day last week. Said he had met Joe Pa a few times (I guess when Auburn played them in bowls, etc) and said that he never thought much of him personally and that he was always a pompous ass and arrogant. I totally believe that now. I wouldn't have 1 year ago. Anyone who would help conceal info on a pervert like Sandusky for his own personal gain is more than arrogant.

I take back every bad thing I ever said about Bowden.  Honestly, I think Schembechler was the last of the OLD Guard of Lengendary coaches with some amount of integrity. I think you can throw Bowden into that mix as well. Maybe even Jordan/Dooley.

Yep, and one has to wonder what else was covered up.  The whole culture there was incestuous.  That final coaching staff had "junior members" with over 5 years on staff, and a couple with over 20.  Unheard of in today's climate.  You only keep people around like that because they can ruin you if you fire them.

This is just an aside with regard to a corch being a pompous ass.  At the beach last week and we were around a couple of big families that were obviously very athletic overall. While I like to throw teh frisbees, swim a little and mostly drink beer and kick back, they were at it for hours, playing volleyball, kayaking, football....basically making me tired watching them.  One kid stood out from the rest.  I'm not gay, but if I was..and much younger, me and him would have some naked time.  Good lookin' kid about 6'2" 220.  Talking to his dad and he said they were from Ohio and huge Buckeye fans.  tOSU was recruiting him and when they went on a visit...came away saying they wouldn't piss on Urban Meyer if he was on fire. Total arrogant shit ass.  He verbaled to BC.
