Title: 28 Auburn-ers in London
Post by: Godfather on July 17, 2012, 09:24:00 AM
Quote
"Once again, Auburn is going to have an outstanding number of current and former Tigers representing us at the London Olympics," said Brett Hawke (AU Swimming & Diving HC). "It speaks very highly of the tradition and competitiveness of the Auburn program that so many athletes at the Olympic Games have worn the `AU' during their careers. We are very proud of the 14 swimmers going to London, but we are especially excited about Tyler McGill, Gideon Louw, Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace, James Disney-May, Marcelo Chierighini and Megan Fonteno - the six swimmers that have trained here in Auburn leading up to the Olympics."

Auburn Olympic medalists that are heading back are:

George Bovell (Swimming, Trinidad & Tobago)
Marc Burns (Track & Field, Trinidad & Tobago)
Cesar Cielo (Swimming, Brazil)
Kirsty Coventry (Swimming, Zimbabwe)
Leevan Sands (Track & Field, Bahamas)
Kerron Stewart (Track & Field, Jamaica)
Matt Targett (Swimming, Australia).

Maurice Smith (Track & Field, Jamaica)
Eric Shanteau (Swimming, United States)

And only two of them representing the US. Not knocking it, just pointing out how well known across the globe the Auburn swimming program is.

American Samoa?

What the fuck is that?

If we start breaking out ethnicities, the USA will never be any good at track...

I don't quite get how that works.  I am assuming you are talking about Megan Fonteno.

This is her profile:
Class: Freshman
Hometown: Jacksonville, FL
PERSONAL:
Parents are Mike and Susan Fonteno ... Has a brother, Michael ... Born in Okinawa, Japan ... Both parents are retired Marines ... Plans to major in pre-pharmacy ... Chose Auburn because of the family aspect, the sportsmanship and great attitudes of the team.

I am not sure how you are classified as to who you can compete for.  I know Kirsty Conventry is from Zimbabwe.

Sounds like Fonteno was maybe born on a military base.  I thought that classified her as US, I dunno maybe she has a choice.

I get how if you are from another country, you compete for that country. But again, what the fuck is American Samoan?

I think it's the part of the Samoan islands that the U.S. owns, but doesn't really incorporate.....they aren't considered U.S citizens....but fuck, I don't know what they are.

I do know a lot of them come play football for Utah.

It means you are a mean assed offensive lineman that Auburn can only dream of.
