Title: My name is............
Post by: Godfather on January 25, 2012, 11:13:54 AM
Name your favorite Auburn player not named Bo or Cam and why?

I'll start.

Karlos Dansby

One of the few times I was right about a player based off of spring practice.  Converted from WR we kept hearing how we was all over the field.  I remember no one even knew who he was...I told my brother watch out for Karlos Dansby this year, he is going to tear the field up.  He was the new breed of LB that Tubs tried to duplicate and had mixed success with.  Great tackling and ball skills. Could cover a WR if need be.

He made some of the most amazing plays, I still remember the diving out of bounds tip the ball play interception that made it as one of the best ESPY plays.  Even his name and number were cool for a LB Karlos <--- with a K and #11!!! His is the one autograph that I have not gotten and would like to add to the collection.

Guy had a nose for the ball...wish you could clone him.

I'll go with Lutz, he is so steady and has great hands and uses his head. I feel he was very under used last year.
And I think he came to Auburn because he loved Auburn.

I always admired Brandon Cox and Randy Campbell. Both had a ton of heart and exceeded their natural born physical limitations. People insulted Brandon hard during games but many didn't know what he was dealing with. He has a great record and with pretty good stats. Campbell was a great game mgr running the Wishbone with Bo. Just an all around nice guy. Pat Sullivan as well. All good Auburn men with class.

As I said in another thread, Jeff Burger was my favorite QB and overall AU player.  Burger was tough, knew how to win in crunch time and epitomized a Pat Dye type player. He was the type QB that gave you the sense AU would win no matter what.  I recall his "suspension" and thinking we had no chance.  When he came running in after one play off, I knew the game was in the bag.

Rudi Johnson.  Other than Cam and Bo he did more to turn Auburn around in a single season than any other player I recall.  If you remember the year before Auburn had the Rusty Williams, Heath Evans, and Markeith Cooper pupu platter at running back.  This play with the call from Mike Tirico just yelling out "Rudi Johnson ...  RUDI JOHNSON! ....  RUDI JOHNSON!!!! TOUCHDOWN AUBURN!!!!! WHAT A RUN!!!! in amazement has to be one of my all time favorite Auburn highlights.

My pick...Charlie Freeman's brother.

The kid absolutely loves Auburn, and did everything he did 110%.  It is well documented that he struggled with assignment foosball, but he had a motor that would not stop.  Even with all the setbacks he had along the way, he still came through probably the worst defense statistically in Auburn history, and played lights out.

Quentin Groves.

Mainly because I was around him a lot when he was at Auburn.  His charisma was contagious, and he was legitimately excited about football 24/7.  His wife was also kind of hot, and it was funny to listen to her yell at him about football.

Also, he was a badass defensive end.

Didn't he have some sort of verbal domestic altercation that came to light pre-draft?  Maybe she was pissed about him trying to get sacks on running plays during the Miss State game?

Jason Miska.

That sack on Barker in the 1993 Iron Bowl was greatness.  Watch the video, and Barker is such a pussy, he just dropped on the ground before Miska got to him, he didn't want to get hit.

I was working at the Winn-Dixie on Dean one summer, and he comes in, about 2am, with three drunk sluts, buys a pack of condoms, and a case of beer.  And just smiled at me as he was leaving.

Junior Rosegreen.

Not only did he provide the most vicious hit video of all time, he played and hit with bad intentions on every play.  Anyone remember the UT game in 04 and what he did?  Picked off three of Angie's passes.  Everyone remembers when we laid out Reggie Brown, but everyone forgets how solid of a player he was.

Interchangeable.   They are always linked in my mind.  One doesn't exist without the other.

I used to want to be Charlie Trotman when i was a kid.  I had a number 6 jersey that was chopped off like his and I'd practice running the option in our neighbor's backyard.   That number stuck.  I wore it most of the time I played baseball and softball.

Still my favorite number.

True story -

A few years ago (around 2006), Sue Locklar asked me to help clean out the storage attic above the Auburn athletic department museum.  You would not believe the amount of Auburn treasure just collecting dust up there.

Anyways, I was moving some stuff around and noticed a booklet of paper underneath a box of signed footballs from one of the early 1980s teams.  This dusty paper booklet was bent from the heavy box, and it had started to fade a little bit.

On the front cover?  The name Terry Beasley.  Inside?  Plays.  Plays upon plays upon plays.  On the back?  Terry Beasley's signature.

The guy I was helping said that it was one of Beasley's old playbooks.  Then he said, "You can have it for helping me up here."

So I put it in a safe spot near the stairs to take home with me.  When we finished what we were doing, the guy scratched his neck and said, "Hey, look.  I probably can't just give that away.  I'm really sorry, but here's a signed football from the 198? team.  You can have it if you want it."

So we traded items.  I remember checking for Bo Jackson's signature on the football.  It wasn't there.  I think it was 1987 or 1988.  So I gave it away to someone.

Anyways, the moral of the story is: if a guy offers you a signed Terry Beasley playbook, you tell him to go fuck himself if he tries to take it back.

I was 12 or 13 when he was there.

I learned how to throw a football by mimicking Pat Sullivan.  Bring it up by your ear and fling the dogshit out of it.  Of course I never had a Beasley to run under the ball and make me look good, but I did what Pat did.  I knew I could never be Pat Sullivan, though.

Then Charlie came along.  He didn't throw it all that well and he wasn't exceptionally fast.  But he could come rolling down the line, that cutoff jersey flapping, ball held in front of him like he was squeezing a teddy bear.  At the last minute he might pitch it, or he'd turn it up and bullrush for some yards.  THAT I believed I could do.  I could be Charlie Trotman.   I guess in a way he was my first football hero.  When my folks got me a semi-official Auburn jersey (back then they were blank) the first thing I did was convince them to put a #6 on it.

My memory is hazy but that might actually have been one of those net ones that was only a jersey on the shoulders and the entire body was some kind of sheer netting stuff.

I cut that bastard off and practiced the option.  My younger brother got to be James Brooks.

Ok. Enough with the reminiscing.

Later in my life I was working on a deal for some property and The Trotman Company was in charge of it.  I called them and didn't make the connection at first.  Got him on the phone and was like... "Charlie Trotman?  THE Charlie Trotman?  Seriously?  THE Charlie Trotman?"  I forgot how to say anything that made sense.
