Title: Pretty pumped
Post by: themilkmandidit on December 08, 2011, 05:34:38 PM
Chizik is taking over defensive duties for the bowl game.  We may put something out there that resembles an actual defense finally.  Anything more than speculation on who we might get to fill the void?  And no, that's not a sexual reference.

So, the defense will still be 10 yard cushions and Neiko will still be out there....so, not much change. I just hope Virginia doesn't run between the tackles.

True, Neiko needs aloe for how much he gets burnt.  Just hoping our guys take a step towards their potential with a  guy that knows defense better than anyone coaching them full-on.

Tampa 2 Defenses rely on hard hitting Safeties, fast OLBers, strong MLBers, pass rushing DEs and DTs. Move Daren Bates back to SS, move Eltoro to OLB, move Craig Sanders to MLB to sub in with Jake Holland (if Holland is avaliable), start Whitacker and Wright at DTs, Nos and Lemon at DEs and bring in Erique Florence at FS. Then take home the Chic-fil-a Trophy.

I actually like this idea...a lot but I don't expect it to happen.

While they played a tampa 2 mid season, you do realize in the last three games we have switched back to a more cover 3 look right?

Glad you said it.

I'm not saying they never installed or ran any Tampa 2, but it's not nearly the base of what we were doing under Roof.  He brought a lot of 3 man line stuff, and used lots of combo coverages, and zone blitz.

Tampa 2 can go to a Cover 3 without change. Typically to successfully perform a Cover 3 type Defense, you need smart and experienced players that knows what everyone else's job is...across the board.

You make too much sense.  That would be a good defense.  Our corners still suck ass though.

Not with Jermaine Whithead and Chris Davis. Also sub in Demetruce McNeal with Florence on rushing downs. "meat" and Bates at the Safety positions? Shiiiit, the over the middle passes would get a mutha fucka killed.

Tampa 2 =/= Cover 3...sorry.

"switched back to a more cover 3 look"...no. Wanna know why we didn't switch to cover 3? Because a Cover 3 is absolutely HORRIBLE against the run, unless you have a very strong Dline (which we don't). We went cover 3 at times, yes. But, we are a Tampa Cover 2 Defense (Fast LBers, that can blitz or drop, Pass rushing DL, Hard hitting Safeties and Zone Cover Corners) that's Coach Chizik's defense.

I think you just hit on something people have forgot about. Bates is a SS. He was a damn good one his first year. He has been very sub par as a LB.

Bates is built for SS.  His body type, his measurables...  He seems to have the brains to do it too.  If I was Chiz, I'd have bates a SS, mainly for his run support, and the occasional safety blitz, while all the linebackers play fundamental position football.  I'm not familiar with Bates coverage skills, but he seemed to have a good idea of what he was doing against Bama.

Just my opinion, but to revamp a defense, you first have to make sure everyone is playing the right position.  i.e. Is there a corner or linebacker that should be a safety?  Is there an offensive skill guy that might be better suited as a corner?  Is there a DT who is actually quick enough to play DE?  Is there a DE quick enough to back up and play linebacker?  These are things to ask.

Other things that need asking.....

Striker was the squadron leader. He brought us in real low. But he couldn't handle it.
Buddy couldn't handle it? Was Buddy one of your crew?
Right. Buddy was the bombardier. But it was Striker who couldn't handle it, and he went to pieces
