When news broke of Joe Paterno's cancer was diagnosed with cancer last month, Paterno's family went to great measures to ensure that the cancer was "treatable," and that Paterno's doctors were "optimistic he will make a full recovery."

That sounds like it may have changed.

SportsByBrooks reports that the former Penn State head coach, who was fired amid the ongoing Jerry Sandusky scandal, has seemingly took a turn for the worst.

Brooks cited a "Penn State athletic department official" who told him that Paterno, 84, is seeing a rapid decline in his health.

"Joe is a lot closer to dying soon than the public is aware. It is very bad," a Penn State source told Brooks.

Also, according to a source, Paterno's family is fearful that this will be the legendary head coach's last Christmas.

How does Brooks not kill himself when he wakes up in the morning?

Fail on my part.  I didn't even catch SbB's name in it.

Here's ESPN (not much better) saying he'll be just fine.

Quote
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- A person close to Joe Paterno's family has told The Associated Press the former Penn State football coach is undergoing treatments and progressing after being diagnosed last month with lung cancer.

The person requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation. Paterno's son, Scott, last month requested privacy for the family after revealing that doctors discovered his father's treatable form of lung cancer during a follow-up visit for a bronchial illness.

School trustees fired Paterno on Nov. 9 in the aftermath of child sex abuse charges against retired defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. Authorities have said Paterno is not a target of the investigation.

Paterno received the cancer diagnosis several days later. His family has said that doctors are optimistic he will make a full recovery.

Paterno hasn't spoken publicly since his dismissal. The person close to the family told the AP on Wednesday night that Paterno "has a great attitude" and deserved privacy.

The Nittany Lions' head coach for 46 seasons, Paterno amassed 409 career victories for a Division I record. He turns 85 on Dec. 21.

Paterno initially announced his retirement effective at the end of the season, saying the scandal was "one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more." The trustees fired him anyway, about 12 hours later.

I'm going to side with SbB here. Joe Pa's health isn't "fine". Having a lot of stress heaped on you in one day on top of a serious illness...and the fact that you're 80 something and you've just been fired from a job that you've dedicated your entire life to...a job that consumes all of your time, nearly seven days a week. Will kill ya.

I always said it was Pat Dye that killed him.  Bo was just the weapon he used.

Sometimes I think you and I are the only ones who think this of Brooks. I really hate the guy. He's the national inquirer for sports. Right about 3% of the time and beats his chest about it when he is. Doesn't confess when he is wrong the other 97%. Just a classic douchenozzle.
