Joe Kieta commentary: SEC football reigns supreme
JOE KIETA
AUBURN, Ala. -- Sports Editor Kevin Price last week handed me a plum
assignment: head to the Auburn-Alabama Iron Bowl to write about my
observations. It would be the first SEC game for this native Ohioan. How
does college football down here stack up with the version up north?
I wasn’t to write a word about the game -- we had that covered. Just the
fans, the atmosphere, the pageantry, the traditions.
It seemed like an easy assignment. Boy, was I wrong.
Attempting to pronounce one school or conference’s traditions superior to
another’s is an impossible and unfair task. It really settles down to a
matter of taste, preference and upbringing. How can anyone say with any
certainty that Nova’s flight over Jordan-Hare Stadium is a better way to
start a college football game than Script Ohio? There is no correct answer.
But I’m not going to wimp out. There are some takeaways from the Iron Bowl
that cannot be disputed.
First is the supremacy of SEC football. Alabama prevailed Saturday over a
young and clearly overmatched Auburn team. But the physicality of SEC play
is without any doubt the closest college football gets to NFL-level
competition. One sportswriter remarked that he thought as many as 20
members of this Crimson Tide team could have fruitful NFL careers. Think
about that for a second: that’s just an unbelievable number.
The quality of play in the SEC outstrips the Big Ten, bar none -- and the
head-to-head records back me up.
This no longer is open to debate.
One of Saturday’s unforgettable moments was the stiff-arm Alabama running
back Trent Richardson put down on an Auburn defender during a fourth
quarter run. It was goosebumps, Heisman highlight-reel material that has
become the signature of SEC football.
My other takeaway concerns the passion of the Auburn-Alabama rivalry. The
history of this grudge match is well-documented and is filled with heroes,
goats, legends and characters. But it’s even better when witnessed in
person.
While it may not have the national profile of Ohio State-Michigan, it
certainly brings all of the same intensity and an extra dose of bile. You
will not find a more passion-filled rivalry game anywhere. Full stop.
As I type this, the vanquished Auburn fans are chanting “LSU! LSU!” to the
Alabama fans. The taunting never ends. And we all know how this rivalry
ventures into unhealthy territory (think the poisoning of the Toomer’s
Corner oaks). The obsession too often crosses over into nuttiness.
Witnessing the Iron Bowl in person was unforgettable. I have never heard a
stadium as loud as when Auburn’s Onterio McCalebb returned the third
quarter kickoff for a touchdown.
So thanks for the assignment, Kevin.
Now about that raise …

After the ass kicking we received on Saturday, I sure as hell hope it wasn't national.

Seriously? It's a fucking LIVE EAGLE FLYING AROUND THE STADIUM.
Eagle > Marching Band
Unless somebody from the marching band eats a dead mouse at midfield after they do the script Ohio. Then we might have a competition on our hands.

Are you shitting me? The past 2 years, the winner of that game has gone on to the national championship game and won. The Iron Bowl could have changed that both times. Could very likely be the scenario for a third year, if Alabama actually goes and wins.

Let's see the i dotters slam into the luxury box windows. Can they do that, huh?

Maybe if we ever play tOSU, we can prep Nova to zero in on the i dotter instead of a sack of flesh. Someone quick, rub the i dotter's shirt down with chicken livers before he goes out on the field. Nova would love it.
