Jefferson County votes to declare bankruptcy
By Alan Collins

The Jefferson County Commission voted on Wednesday to declare bankruptcy, the largest municipality in U.S. history to do so. The commission voted 4-1 to declare bankruptcy after spending nearly two days in executive session. Commissioners met with lawyers to discuss proposals designed to settle its $3.2 billion sewer debt with creditors. However, commissioners were unable to reach a consensus and instead voted to enter into Chapter 9 bankruptcy. Commissioner George Bowman was the only commissioner to vote against bankruptcy. The vote ends years of efforts to resolve the county's sewer debt crisis. Commission President David Carrington said this commission has faced several problems and, at this moment, the commssion does not have one agreement from creditors. "I'm sorry this has to be done," Carrington said. Carrington thanked county attorneys and emplyees and fellow commissioners for their work in the process. Copyright 2011 WBRC. All rights reserved

And when they say years, they mean lots of'em.
-
What exactly does this mean?
-
Birmingham and Jefferson County are two separate municipalities.

If you live or work within the County, you are fucked.
It is really a restructuring of the approximately 4 Billion in sewer debt. There are several other factors in play and the answers are really not known.
If the County owes you money at this point though, hope you can wait a long time to get it...

But you better damn know they are going to get theirs.

By the way, I don't feel sorry for any community that would allow Larry Langford to be voted in to ANY position of authority.

While I agree...he's not even close to the worst they have voted in over the years.

Glad I live out in Shelby County.

Every time I go to VisionLand, I hug his statue.

Larry learned from the best....The good mayor Arrington started this whole ball rolling.

My water bill may go up, but at least I'm on septic and don't have to pay sewer fees
