Sources: Houston Nutt out at Ole Miss

By Chris Low and Edward Aschoff
ESPN.com

Mississippi coach Houston Nutt will not be retained after this season, multiple sources told ESPN.com, and the university will make an announce at a 3 p.m. ET news conference.

Sources also said that athletic director Pete Boone also will not return once the university hires his replacement. It's not clear when that announcement will be made.

Nutt, in his fourth season as coach of the Rebels, will coach the remainder of this season. Ole Miss has lost 12 straight Southeastern Conference games dating to last season and is assured of its second straight losing season under Nutt.

Coming over to Mississippi from Arkansas in 2008, Nutt led the Rebels to nine victories in each of his first two seasons, including back-to-back Cotton Bowl wins.

So Bama's losing Kirby Smart?

Shit.

We should make a list of why Oxford, MS is a horrible place to live and send it to Gus's wife.

What was it Tuberville's wife said?  Only one grocery store in the entire county?

I don't get it.  Either fire him and name an interim coach or hold your announcement until after the Egg Bowl.

What is to be gained by leaving the lame duck in place?

I don't think we have to worry about Gustav taking the OM job.  He is intimately familiar with Hooty's MO and knows that the OM program might as well have burned to the ground after Nutt leaves.  The rebuilding will take far longer than anyone wants to remain at OM.  The next coach they hire will face multiple losing seasons trying to repair the damage.

Dale can run those 9 win programs into the ground.

I would think Ole Piss knows this also, which makes me think they would realistically go after someone like Pat Sullivan; a good coach from a small school. This is not to say Sullivan would be this stupid but I'm sure there is a HC out there somewhere trying make a name for himself.

Bobby Petrino says you're crazy.

Bobby Petrino says you're crazy.

Arkansas is in a better position to rebuild quicker than OM.

Petrino wasn't as familiar with the mess he was stepping in as Gus is.

This must be like Christmas morning for Ole Miss fans. They get rid of Nutt AND Boone. Firing Boone will at least give them a chance at not fucking up the next coaching search.

So Bama's losing Kirby Smart?
They already have a hot board up on the Rivals Ole Miss site. Kirby Smart #1, Gus #2. I don't think they want to shell out the money it would take for Kirby Smart to take on that mess. But then again, I never thought Saban would take on Alabama either. It's not like Gus is going to come at a discount rate either. But maybe with Boone out as AD, they might make a bold move.

If Alabama loses Smart, that is going to fucking hurt. Bad. It's Saban's defense all day long, but Kirby knows it inside out, and he actually gets to run the defense. He knows his shit. Maybe Saban could convince Muschamp that this Florida shit just isn't going to work out.

Righhhhhhhhhhhhhhht.  And if Auburn loses Malzahn we will convince Belichick to leave the Patriots.

Anyone know Gus' mindset concerning head corching?  I don't recall any specific comments he made last year when he was in the mix for a few positions.  Certainly, I don't want to lose the guy but there's always turnover in coaching.  Who was the Hawaiin, Chinkey, Jap dude that was at USC with Carrol?  Always considered a great OC but never seemed to be head coaching material.

I wonder if Gus is quite comfortable running his offenses and making $1 mil plus every year with little or no pressure, relatively speaking.  Wishful thinking on my part.

Agree with Wes...you don't say "Let's get a divorce, but wait until after Christmas."  Send him packing, along with Boone now.

Gus turned down Vandy, and I don't see this as much of a step up either as they stand now, or on potential.  Gus can do better.

Someone mentioned Pat Sullivan...I think he's very content at Samford.  Don't think he'd be up for another D1 job where he has little chance to be successful.  Then again he wanted the UAB job, but Birmingham is also home.

Firing Boone makes a difference too.  You never know if Ole Miss might hire a go getter, and decide to upgrade the football program.  Doubt it, but it happens.

I don't really think Pat would take that job either, I was only referring to a good coach that is somewhat well known from a smaller type school. I am assuming that the Ole Miss administration would realize what wes has mentioned and that is their program will more than likely suck ass for a while longer regardless of who coaches. Why spent so much more damn money on the same results?

Might be a job Leach would try to get.  But I hear he may be lobbying for the Kentucky job.

Wouldn't want Leach at Ole Miss.  No, they'd probably never win anything of consequence because after all, they are Ole Miss.  But they get just enough good athletes over there to be competitive most years and implementing Leach's system would make them a dangerous draw on any given Saturday.

Kentucky would be a good fit for Leach but I would think Joker has at least another year. I'd bet Leach will surface onto the Ole Piss wish list before too long.

He already has according the WJOX.

Leach?  Great football coach, but having him in the SEC would be dangerous for everybody concerned.  He's not the type to keep his mouth shut, or play the good ole boy game of making that friendly phone call: "Coach, you're cheating, and I'm just letting you know we know it, and you're exceeding the normal bounds, so this is your friendly call to let you know we know, and we'd like you to get back in line."  He'd go straight to the NCAA with anything.  I don't want him here.
