Chizik speaks:

CLEMSON, S.C. -- Gene Chizik is going back to the drawing board with his defense.

The Auburn coach said Saturday he'll reevaluate what the Tigers are doing after allowing Clemson 624 yards in a 38-24 loss to Clemson.

The Tigers, 2-1, have allowed more than 1,600 yards through the first three games.

"I'm going to really evaluate everything. I'm going to look at things. I have confidence in every coach on my staff," Chizik said.

"It's very glaring, defensively, we have a lot of work to do."

The loss snapped the nation's longest winning streak at 17. The quick game story is here.

"We're not doing things a lot differently than the last two years," Chizik said.

And on bouncing back from a rare loss, Chizik said his team will be ready to go at Sunday's practice.

"I fully expect them there tomorrow ready to go to get better. That's not an option," he said.

Auburn led 14-0 and 21-7. But Clemson outscored Auburn 31-3 from there.

"I feel like they outplayed us from the second quarter pretty much through the rest of the football game," Chizik said. "We had a fast start to the game, but couldn't really sustain much after there.

"We were not making plays when we had the opportunity to do so."

Clemson converted 10 straight third-down plays during their comeback.

"It's an issue. We know it's an issue. We've got to go back to the beginning of the season and go back and look.

Sounds suspiciously like the dreaded "vote of confidence" for the whole Def. Staff!  We can only hope!

The 7000 yards our defense gave up is more than a feeling.

I'm just wondering what he could do to change the defense.  What other guys do we have to play besides the freshmen and sophomores already out there?

Everyone was missing tackles.

I think Chizik is giving coach-speak.  Just shutting everyone up about the defense.  He'll try to fix it behind closed doors.

It's all he can do. Saying "I'm going to fire the entire defensive staff and bench every starter!" wouldn't be very conducive to improvement either.

Last season, the top offense in the country for 3rd down conversions converted 57%.  Auburn was #3 at 53%.   Teams converting above 43% were in the top third of all offenses for conversion rate.

Going in to the game today our defense was giving up 56% conversions on 3rd down.  That's after Utah St. and MSU!

Today?  Clemson converted 14 of 18 for 78%.

The schedule only gets worse.

At the rate we seem to be headed on defense, Malzahn will have to score a TD and 2 point conversion on every offensive possession the rest of the season to have half a chance to win.
