Normally, that wouldn't mean anything around here, but this time it does. It means Tommy Tuberville is coaching against Dennis Franchione again.

Unfortunately, I recall that one all too well. Yeesh..not a good day.

One of only two Auburn games I've left early, the other being 1992 Vanderbilt, and Auburn up big in the pouring rain.

I went to a restaurant on Opelika Highway after the game and one of the offensive linemen and his family came in and he winds up sitting next to me at the bar. For the life of me I can't remember if it was Mark Pera or whoever. I wound up asking him what the strategy was in having the corners play 10-12 yards off the receivers every.....single.....play. They only completed about 793 quick slants and button hooks that day. May have been 796...can't recall.
Anyway, he tells me, "Shut the fuck up, bitch". Okay, that's what I expected him to say but he just laughed and said he had no idea what they were thinking.

Same here...but my other one was the Georgia 1996 game with 325 overtimes. We left during the second OT, and were almost back to Birmingham when it finally ended.

My first ever Auburn game to attend in person. For my dad also. Luckily we ended up having tickets barely under the upper deck so we sat through the whole game. My dad pointed out two people in Vanderbilt gear sitting in the very top corner of the upper deck with nobody else within 20 yards of them late in the 4th quarter and saying, "What's the matter with them? I thought Vanderbilt was supposed to be full of smart people?"

I've only seen AU quit in a game twice in my memory. That was one of the two.
Was on the field for that one and could hear the conversations close up. There was a lot of "fuck this and fuck you, too" on the sidelines.
I really didn't think Tuberville could survive that. He surprised me.

Yeah, I remember hearing several people after the game saying, Tuberville just didn't get it. That he had no idea what this game really meant to the fans.
I'd say he figured it out. As a matter of fact, one of the talks I heard him give years later prior to one season had him saying he's well aware that the Iron Bowl is THE game on their schedule. They have stuff up on the bulletin boards all the time about that game. Glad he got it. I personally don't care how anyone else feels and certainly I want AU to win every game, regardless. But THAT game......

It was a weird game. From the jump it looked like Carnell was going to run all over their ass. Then they got him in that pileup when he was struggling for yards and broke his collarbone.
Everybody started looking around trying to figure out who was going to take up the slack. Then Zow hit two passes and we were staggered.
Franchione had snookered us, too. Everybody was expecting Watts to come out and run that goofy ass option with his flat, dead arm. AU's coaching staff spent the entire time prepping for Watts. Weren't defensively prepared for Zow.
What made it worse is we were like a 12-point favorite and would have gone to the SEC-CG if we'd won.
That was the year we would have beaten the bleeding fuck out of LSU in September, but had to move the game after the twin tower attacks. We limped in there with our chemistry destroyed and no Carnell and looked like shit.
I seriously thought Tuberville was dead man walking. And then when he shit the bed in 2003? I was on the firing line, locked and loaded too.

So, what you're saying is that you've always been a reactionary, hair-trigger, SOB.
Just checkin.

Not exactly. But at the time I made a pretty logical argument for why he wasn't going to get it done. Every time he'd had a chance to put AU at the next level he'd shit the bed to that point.
Horrible losses to Arkansas. Two chances to win the SEC West and get back to the title game.. Fail. The promise of 2003 when there was an obscene amount of talent at every position and it turned into a freakshow.
Housel was telling me to be patient, it was a five year plan. And then they tried to coup him. I was okay either way.

I think the truth was that Housel tried to eat him.

That bitch slapping by Ark. in 2002, at home no less, prompted an angry letter to Housel from me the Monday following. I was shocked he personally called me at the office 2 days later asking me my thoughts. Maybe he thought I was "somebody" because it was on letterhead. Not sure he actually cared, or that my thoughts mattered a bit, but he asked. The one thing I did detect in his voice was a serious contemplation to make a change.

Nobody has ever loved Auburn more than David Housel.
Nobody has ever cared more about what the Auburn family thought than David Housel. He honestly wanted to know what you were thinking.
I miss the guy. Maybe not as AD, but in an ambassador's role. I love his writing.

Finebaum makes fun of the "this is war" speech, but it's my fucking magna carta.

Forget how he sounds. This call to arms is my life's mission. It's everything I believe.
I'm not scared of those fuckers. And if they weren't scared of us, they wouldn't be worrying about us every day.
We're coming after their butt. Today. Tomorrow. The day after tomorrow, the day after that and the day after that. We won't rest, we won't sleep we won't be deterred until we paint this entire state orange and blue.
Fucking A.

I didn't mean to imply he didn't love Auburn. I agree completely on that. And maybe I'm wrong that he did really care what I had to say. The fact that he called me personally was enough, whether he actually valued my thoughts or not.

The UGA game in Cox's last year when Stafford and Moreno were at UGA....yeah, we never even came out of the locker room for that one. Couple of Arky games from the 2000's also come to mind as well. Fred Talley is still gaining yards I believe....
