Title: It's Here...
Post by: Snaggletiger on August 25, 2011, 11:55:42 PM
Went to a high school football game tonight.  Yessss....football.  Well, the actual foosballz sucked, total mismatch.  Rehobeth is a little community just outside Dothan.  White flight from Dothan City schools sent the enrollment numbers soaring and as a result, Rehobeth is 5A....which they have no business whatsoever being.  0-10 last year and not much hope for more than 2-3 wins this year.  Apparently some money came too because they christened a brand new stadium tonight.  Nice ass high school stadium with 2 field houses, new concession stands, kick ass weight room facility and....YES, my brother in law coaches there.

Anyway, they opened the season against 6A Northview, a Dothan school that has had huge success in the past but has fallen on hard times the past 7-8 years.  Good looking ball club now, that dwarfed Rehobeth in numbers, size, speed...you name it.  35-0 at half.  Coolest thing about the game was 3 sky divers (did not catch the military branch on the P.A.) who landed at midfield, one of which had a huge American flag streaming behind him. Nice!!!

Anyway.....football is here baby. Let's get it on.

I called the season opener at Cullman tonight.  I was expecting a great game, but was extremely dissappointed.  5A Cullman was hosting 6A Sparkman, and Sparkman had some HUGE lineman, and Cullman was up 34-0 at the half.  Second half was Cullman's JV team playing and the final was 41-13.  Cullman has a very nice stadium that is now in its second season.  They have the sprint turf, with a nice new video scoreboard with a new field house too.

I had to travel to Carrolton to scout our first opponent last Fri. night.  Was too damn hot, but football distracted me from the heat for a while, as did some of the MILF scenery.  Went and caught another game last night just because they were playing so close to the house.  We open our season tonight, and I'm pumped!

Hey Snag, when does Eufaula play Dothan? I haven't been keeping up with HS ball since moving down here. My son says they played exhibition two weeks ago I think, with Eufaula winning but exhibition doesn't mean shit.

Isn't Mike Dumbose the one who fucked up Northview?

He coached one year there and went 0-10.  I believe that was 02' but in his defense, they had squat for talent.  Both Dothan schools went through tough times throughout the past decade and are finally getting competitive.  He went to Luverne after that and actually put them back on the map.

You scouted PA?  Christ on a golf cart... WHY?

They have about 13 players, some of them weigh less than 100 pounds.

Not a whole lot of MILF there, either.  Probably some recent grads, but MILF?  I gotta call BS on that.

On another note, football should never start this early. It was a damn hot box last night.  Can't imagine what the players were feeling.

They did have something cool for the inaugural game at the stadium.  Three skydivers (Forget what branch of service they were from) landed on the field.  Smoke coming from the heels and the last guy had a huge American flag streaming behind him.  That stuff gives me chills.

We picked up Spain Park's former coach, David Shores, and from they way our Panthers looked against Grissom lay weekend, we should field a competitive team this year.

I'm just poking fun of Glenwood. Bless em. Most of their kids appear to belong in Jr. High. Next time your down that way, let me know.

Rose is an asshole. End of story. Seen it in person. A family member of mine is also a coach there and can't stand him. It seems to be the general trend.

High school football coaches can sometimes be so ignorant.

School I know of has a line that averages 280.  Big fast kids.  Probably got a dozen potential running backs.

What do they do Friday?  Throw the ball 39 times.  12 completions. Five picks, two returned for TDs.

Lose.

Idiots.

Which one?

Aliceville.

They've always had a massive line.  And they always want to throw the ball.  Twice in the past 15 years they've had a coach who pulled back and ran the ball behind that line.  Twice they won the state title.  Then that coach leaves and they go back to flinging it all over the yard.

I think the lure of the all out spread passing has about run it's course, for the most part.  Some are still enamored with it.  The move to power run spread, IMO, is due, in part, to what guys like Malzahn and Meyer have done with the power running spread.  Pelham HS used to be a Tony Franklin System team.  Unlike Hoover, they never had much success with it.  Their "Franklin guy" left to take a HC job in GA, and they've now gone to Double Wing.  I haven't seen them play, but was told they're running it a la Ga Tech, which is not what I call Double Wing, but that's what I heard Josh Niblet call it the other day in a radio interview.  At any rate, whether it's power Double Wing, or Option Flexbone, it's certainly a far cry from the 40 pass per game spread.   Then again, the guy that just came in at Spain Park is a Tony Franklin System guy, though he doesn't call it that, that's essentially what it is.   Niblet kept the spread look at Hoover, but is much more run oriented.

Just by way of comparison to Aliceville...

Last year in the 6A Title game, Hoover ran the ball 30 times, for 32 yards, no TDs.  Passing 14-24-0, 236 yards 1 TD.  They lost 7-6 to Daphne.

12 of the 24 passing attempts came in the 4th Q after Daphne took the lead.

Things that make you go hmmmm?

Been watching Aliceville for 18 years.  They start throwing from the first play.  I've thought they coach like they are playing PlayStation.

They do have a fantastic receiver in Demario Lanier this year but I don't know if they can get him the ball consistently.  Kid played at Gordo last year and moved over to Aliceville.  His brother was the first player Chizik got to commit, but he ended up at Tennessee after some juco nonsense. Izuea Lanier.

There's a lot of that going around.  Some coaches are enamored by it, while other cave to parent or even admin pressure to look like the latest craze in college football.

We beat the shit out of PA the other night.  They're a veer team, and not a good one.  Though they got an athlete at QB.  Fast motherfuckin' white boy!  I understand that in times past they've been a good small private school program?

In the early 90s they were as good as I've seen in AISA.   Won five championships or more.  Had some kids go on to play small college ball at places like UWA, Jax, Samford, etc.

Josh Wright (now HC at Bessemer) was a damn good QB and could run.  His brother Jody Wright -- where do we know that name? -- was hell at RB.  If he got outside it was over.  They both set AISA records.  Had some big linemen, too.  Real headhunter defense.  Super linebacking.

Then the parents started flexing muscle.  This one wasn't playing, that one should be over there.  Eventually forced the coach and headmaster out.  Downhill ever since.

Not sure he could do much with the numbers they have now, though.  Small scrawny kids.  I picked them to go 5-5, but my instincts really said 2-8 at best.

PA as in Patrician Academy?  We used to play them when I was in high school (Clarke County Prep; nee Grove Hill Academy) in the old AISA days.  I can't remember one way or another about them in high school football, I know they kicked the crap out of us one year in basketball.

Every week in AISA it was Wing-T or the Veer, you didn't see a lot of creative play calling.   Down south Alabama it's all power football even with the bigger schools.  When Thomasville played Guntersville for the 4A state championship a few years ago Thomasville came out in the Wing-T and ran on Guntersville pretty good, but had not idea how to stop the spread O that Guntersville was running.  Thomasville just lined up in a 4-3 defense and played two deep-5 under zone and got picked apart.

Niblett will win championships at Hoover. He coached a bunch of white boys to a state championship at Oneonta a few years back. He is a good guy and a good coach.

I can tell you that Sparkman looks like crap.  They had a football player killed in a car wreck and buried him the week prior to the season starting.  Somebody told me that there are two directions a team will go from that kind of tradgedy, and it looks like it will be a long season for the Senators.

Daleville H.S....home of Tony Richardson...beat Bullock County 53-23 Friday night.  They had a running back, Brandon Burks rush for 401 yards and 7 TD's.  2 more were called back for penalties.  Now granted, Bullock County normally is beyond suxxors, but that's impressive against a pee wee team.

The most impressive thing about Bullock is usually the band.  I saw a half time show last year where 3 people got pregnant.  Good times.

I haven't seen either of those, but I have heard that Hartselle is looking like its normal self.  They had a pretty impressive win in the opener.

Since Snaggle mentioned pee wee football I will tell you what happened to my nephew this weekend.  My nephew is 11 and is about 5'5" and over 100lbs, so he is a good sized kid.  He went to make a tackle against a kid bigger than him (holy shit, there's some big kids in the 6th grade) and ended up getting his back broke in two different places.  He had to be transported by amberlamps to the ER.  He broke one in the C section of the spine and one in the L section.

Jesus, hope he is alright.

C-7 and L-5.  Yes he is ok, other than being in a lot of pain.  One other note, they didn't find the C-7 fracture that night at the ER.  My BIL was called Sunday morning and told that the radiologist had found another break.

Damn, dude.  Is he in a body cast?  That's neck and lower back - how in the HELL does an 11 yo get hit that hard?

I'm not sure how it happened, all I was told was that he was trying to make a tackle against the boy.  May have landed funny or on another player.  No, they didn't put him in a cast, just gave him pain killers and he was suppose to go back today to see a specialist.  I'm out of town now, so I won't find out any updates till later tonight.

Good times.
Now that's some good shit.
