An Indiana man claims he was turned away at a blood donation center because a screener said he appeared to be gay, even though he is not, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Aaron Pace, 22, told the newspaper that he was prevented from giving blood during a recent visit to Bio-Blood Components Inc. in Gary, Ind., after the center said he "appears to be a homosexual."

Pace claims the center, which reportedly pays up to $40 for blood and plasma donations, rejected him during the interview screening process because of his character and behavior, according to the newspaper.

"I was humiliated and embarrassed," Pace told the newspaper. "It’s not right that homeless people can give blood but homosexuals can’t. And I’m not even a homosexual.”

A spokesperson for the center was not immediately available for comment when contacted Tuesday by FoxNews.com.

The newspaper reports that many donation centers, including the American Red Cross, continue to cite a 30-year-old federal policy that prohibits gay men from donating blood -- even though all blood is now tested for HIV and other infectious diseases.

The policy was implemented in 1983 at the start of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Well you can't tell much from a still picture.  Maybe he came skipping in singing show tunes.
