Title: Keep arms and legs inside of the ride... no, seriously...

DARIEN, N.Y. (AP) — A U.S. Army veteran who lost both legs in Iraq and had been trying to rebuild his life was killed after he was thrown from a roller coaster at an upstate New York amusement park.

Teams of inspectors on Saturday were examining the Ride of Steel coaster at the Darien Lake Theme Park Resort, about 30 miles east of Buffalo.

Sgt. James Thomas Hackemer, 29, was ejected from the 208-foot-tall ride early Friday evening after climbing aboard during a family outing. Authorities and a park spokeswoman declined to say at what point in the ride the accident occurred.

The wounded veteran was missing all of his left leg and most of his right one, as well as part of a hip, because of a roadside bomb.

Passengers are held in by a bar that sits across their legs.

Note:  I think that bears repeating...

Passengers. Are. Held. In. By. A.  Bar. That. Sits. Across. Their. Legs.

Holy shit.

Be interesting to see where this thread goes, but I'm betting nobody calls the dead, double amputee, combat vet a dumbass for getting killed on a dangerous ride that he was unable to safely strap in to.

I call him a dumbass if he knew the safety protocol of ride and insisted on riding anyway.

How does one come to "know the safety protocol"?

Geometry and physics?

It's pretty obvious how those bars work.  They rest on your thighs.  When you start rise up, your legs are pushed back down.  If you don't have legs, you're just going to continue rising.

Apparently to this guy, it wasn't obvious.  Dumbass I guess.

Soldiers can be dumb asses too.  Not only was he a dumbass for staying on the ride after seeing how the securing device works, the attendant who is in charge of securing him is a dumb ass.

Yep, just curious if folks would stay consistent.

The amusement park will be sued, no way in hell should he have been allowed to ride that particular Coaster.

You can't discriminate against the soldier with no legs.

There's no way a man with no legs should be tall enough to ride anyway unless he was 7' before.
